MOB1t1EN, Of Gnnanoque,Ss visiting her mother in town. • MR, D. D. i17CTAGGAR'r, of Mon - tree), was holidaying in Clinton last and a part of thio week, Miss TENA CpgPER is holidaying by the fresh 'winter sea side at Kincardine. Ma. H. W. C. MEYER, Q. C., of Wingham, we regret to learn is dangerously ill from heart disease at Calgarry, N. W. T. MR. \VALTER'COATES and family have returned to Cliuton to reside. Mr. Coates will open a restaurant in the premises formerly oocupied by the late C. Cruickshank. "Doc" &mateLL has commenced the building of a brick structure on Isaac street in which he will have his office and an equine sanitarium. The "Doc" is in it every time. Miss MURRAY is away o n a vacation for a month or so and will spend a portion of the. time in Hamilton and probably at Kingston and Ottawa and among the delight- ful scenery of the St, Lawrence. THE RIFLE,—L'tSti Wednesday's practice score was as follows at 200, 400, 500 and 600 yards :—N. Rob• ,son, 13, 15, 14, 17-59; James Anderson, 10, 17, 14, 9-5t); John F. Spooner, 6, 13, 7, 11-37. CAst iELON BRos. made the first shipment of apples from this sec. tion last week. They were consign- ed to eastern markets. The Messrs. Cantelon expect to handle an enor- mous quantity of all kiuds of fruit this season. 'al B LACROSSE CONTROVERSY.— The Goderich Star says :—Ae there is now a probability that the dis• pute between the Goderich and Clinton lacrosse clubs will be set- tled amicably the letter of President Williams, which was protnised publication in the Star is withheld, • in the hope Hutt a bettor feeling may be brought about. PROBABLY $200,000 h been paid out for cattle this season to farmers in the vicinity tributary to Clintou, .And the large number of cattle that thie large sum represents were either for home consumptiou or destined for Britain. Not one hoof was sent to the United States because that country has a larger surplus than Canada and depends principally upon Britain for a market. . THE A1'PLE LEAF FOREVER I—. There seems to be a goodly 'lumber of Canadians in Denver, Col., and they have organized "The Maple Leaf Club" with R. T. Flouter, formerly of Ingersoll, as president, and W. B. Robb, a former worthy. citizen of Clinton , as Secretary. Some will ask why do not these Canadians stay in Canada? We will answer this by asking why the numerous Atnericau residents in Canada, or the many natives of England, Scotland, Ireland or Ger- many do not remain in their native land 1 The most intelligent civil. ized people in the world have migratory tendencies. FALL Snow DATES.—The South Agricultural Society will bold their fall show this year at Seaforth, ou Tuesday and Wednesday, October 4 and 5., The East Huron Agricul- tural Society will hold their show at Brussels, on Thursday and Fri- day, Octobor 6 and 7. The Stephen and Usborne show will be at Txe ter, on Monday and Tuesday, ep. tember 26 and 27. The Clinton show will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, September 21 22 and 23. The Goderich .show will be held on Wednesday, Thurs- day and Friday, September 28, 29 and 30. The Western at London from September 15 to 24. The In- dustrial at Toronto, from Septem- ber 5 to 17. OUR CRICKETERS.—Clinton can boast of one the best cricket teams in Western Ontario, and the club has pretty well established its repu tation. Last Friday a game of cricket was played between Wood- stock and Galt, at the former place. 1ttoesrs. L. Kennedy, J. McMurahie, and G. Barge took part in the game with the Woodstock team and scored 10, 9 and 11 respectively. It was a one innings game and • resulted in 85-38 runs, 47 in favor of Woodstock. On August 5th the Clinton Cricketers will cross willows with East Toronto on the grounds of the latter. It is proposed by our sub to lay a new crease this fall. will cost probably $75 to do so. Heretofore many cricket teams, as well as other sporting clubs, could not be induced to come to Clinton on account of the poor grounds. This is a matter for regret, as all these meetings advertise and help the town in various ways. We would like to see the whole park grounds put and kept in better shape. Many a youth and grown person spends a summer evening there, and a great many more would do so if the grounds were only what they should be. KIDD, of Seaforth, the genial Iuapeotor of Food, was in town Monday obtaining samples of sonde and liquids 'sold for conlmunrp, tion, which will be analysed by the internal P.eveuue Ddpartment, with a view to determine whether what is sold contains anything injurious or is what it is represented to be. MASONIC.—At the meeting of the Royal Arch Compauions, Grand Chapter of Masons, in London last week,•C. A. Humber of Goderioh was elected District Superintendent for Huron. And Joseph Beck, of Seaforth, ex -Warden of the county of Huron, was elected Deputy District Grand Master for No. 4, and J. A. Morton, of Wingham, for No. 5. THE HURON MEDICAL ASSOCIATION met in Seaforth on the 19th, when papers were read by De, Ferguson, of Toronto, on Epilepsy, and Dr. Dick- son on electricity in medicine. A great many casea were presented and discussed by the local doctors. Arrangements were made to hold a medical picnic either in Bayfield or Goderich sometime about the middle of August.. Drs. Gunn, Turnbull, Worthineton and Shaw were in at, tendance from Clinton. Aeour four o'clock Sunday morn ing there wag a very severe thunder storm accompanied by lightning and rain. Many of our citizens were 'aroused from their beds and huddled in their houses awaiting the final crack of doom, while others less timid paraded the streets at an earlier hour than they were wont to on any morning, especially on that of the Sabbath. A house owned b3 Arthur Ca'ntelon and occupied by Mr. McNeill was invaded by the electric current and havoc; played with pets slid pans and a brick hurled from the chimney of the house through the window of a house adjoining. The sheds at the Catholic church were also somewhat injured so was a stable belonging to Mr. Cantelon, and there was minor damage done to other property. SOMEWHAT PREVIOUS. —The Sea• forth Expositor and the manage- ment of the meet on August 5th there are somewhat previous in announcing that the final lacrosse match for the championship of the western district will be played be tween Soaforth and St. Mary's At present the clubs stand as follows : Seaforth won 3 lost 0 Clinton " 2 " 1 Goderich " 0 " 3 Seaforth playa Clinton on the park. here to morrow (Thursday). It all depends on the result of this match as to what clubs will play off. In any event the Seaforth management have shown their capacity for "gall" and most certainly are taking undue advantage in advertising what is not yet a fact. The game to -morrow will be one of the most keenly con- tested of the season, but we aro sorry to learn that many who would otherwise have been onlookers may not witness the match to -morrow owing to the erroneous impression created by the Seaforth people— that the game will be a "cooked" one.
