COUNCILLOR WERRY had a severe
experience with a shaping machine
at the Doherty factory the other
day. The tops of three fingers of
the left hand were taken off and he
will necessarily be laid up for a
while.
Mo. R. G. StustoNDs,while letter-
ing a monument the other day, was
struck on the eye ball with a chip
oaf the stone. The stone was pretty
warm and was imbedded deeply in
the eye ball. A physician succeed-
ed in removing it. Mr. Simmonds
will not lose the sight of the eye,
we are pleased to learn.

JUDGE MCCRAF of Algoma district
died on Thursday evening at Sault
Ste. Marie, aged 84 years. It is
current in- this section that Fred.
W. Johnston, the senior judge, will
be elevated to the junior judgeship.
MR. WM. FLUKER, of Auburn,
was a caller at THE NEWS -RECORD
on Saturday.' He bas been residing
on the present homestead, West
Waw•anosh, continuously for 47
rears and is in his 77th year. Mr.
bilker is a Cavan Irishman, is
smart and full of good' humor. We
hope Mr. Pinker will live for many
years to come. He celebrated the
12th (yesterday) at Dungannon.
MR. W. JACKSON left on Mon,
diry reaming for the old land,
Mrs. Jackson accompanied him.
They expect to sail from Montreal
at daybreak this (Wednesday)
morning. Mr. Jackson will visit
the principal trade centres in Eng-
land, Ireland and Scotland for the
purpose of laying in a select stock
of the best goods produced by those
countries. Mr. Tisriall also left at
the same time on a pleasure trip to
the old land, and Mr. John Rens-
ford accompanier) the party as far
as Montreal.
MR. GEORGE SwARTs has alnico
patch of potatoes. They are a
sample of some he received frotn
British Columbia. We did not
learn the name, but they resembled
the red elephant in appearance.
One hill of them was raised on
July 6th. There were in it 27
eatable ones, some larger than hen.;
eggs and quite firm, all weighing two
pounds and one ounce, Many
small ones were left in the hill.

A WATERFORD WRINKLE.—A
gentleman in Watford who drives a
baulky, horse occasionally, has
adopted a novel method forpersuad-
ing the stubborn animal to continue
his journey when required. The
apparatus consists .of an electric
battery connected by wire to the bit
and crupper. Just as the horse has
decided to give himself a prolonged
rest the current is turned on and he is
obliged to move along at a lively
gait. The air of surprise and dis-
gust manifested by the animal oper-
ated on is amusing to witnese. The
experiment was tested, and worked
like a charm,
