The 'Reformers had hotter get a divorce from their Grit friends with whom they are allied. The court of public opinion will justify them for they have equally good grounds with the Nebraska man who has just secured a divorce from his wife because alio told "ton .thousand lies." Hero is au account of the divorce case : In the Circuit, CJurt of 13'3 [trice, Neb., W filch hold an adjourned term last Saturday, William Truesdale was granted an adsolute divorce from his wife Amelia. The petition reciting the charges' on which divorce was sued for is perhaps the most curious one ever filed in a court. It recites the fact that the wife is an incorrigible gossip whose propensities for gossip• ing renders life with her unbear- able, Truesdnle avers that in the three years he has lived with his wife she has told teu thousand lies. "an•d cannot tell the truth," he do- clares in his petition, "and while it is in the nature of a disease, I believe it incurable. Hence I ask relief in a divorce." Among the many interesting yarns which his wife amused herself by telling he filed these :—She told hire that his mother had just been found dead in bed, murdered by unknown persons; that their nearest neighbor and his best friend had attempted a crimi- nal assault upon her; that she had received a letter from a lawyer in her old honkie telling her that she inherited a fortune, and to send him $50 at once (she spent the money for a new dress); that their little son had fallen iu the well and broke his leg (he was asleep in the crib), that their minister bad eloped with a servant girl, leaving his wife and five children destitute, which story when repeated by him was the means of costing him $700 and a good deal of trouble to keep from being convicted of criminal libel. These aro but a few of the charges brought by the husband, the sub- stantiation of which proved his wife one of the most accomplished liars living, and not a whit scrupu- lous. Trueadale was granted an absolute divorce. orP!CEits. Thos. E. Hays, President, Seaforth P. 0. ; W. J. Shannon, Seey.Treas., Seaforth P,,O. ; John Hannah, Manager, Seaforth P. 0 •DIREO(Rary Jas. Tbe•'wusio coming from the orad• le of the race, the words telling of the faraway goal, tbis hymn seems peculiarly fitted for the worldwide fame it 'has won. Of the millions who have sung it there are perhaps few who know how it came to be written. I have the story direct from the author, whose Bible class I at• tended, In 1838 or•' 43, the date I and not sure of, Andrew Young was a young pian—a teacher in St. Andrews,Scotland—and much inter ented in Sunday school work. It. happened that, spending an evenine with a family recently returned from Iudia,he heard one of the lades played something which struck him very much. "What is thnt 4" he sit'''. " she answered, "That is a Hindustani air called 'The Happy Land.' 'The water carriers sing it.' He asked her to play it again, which she did, and again, and again, five or six times. The idea had occurr ed to him that the air would bt suitable for a Sunday school hymn. The next day lie wrote "The Happy Land," His scholars took to it at once, visitors heard it, and it spread and was translated into many Ian, gua'ges aid sung in every clime, and taus out of the eater has come fo h meat and out of the strong sweetness, and the water carrier's song has brought many to the ever living strea Ms. "rhe farmers are being ruined by the N. IIOW "THERE IS A HAPPY LAND" C01IE TO BE WRITTEN, THE QUEEN'S CHAMPION. New York Recorder :— Queen Victoria is in danger of losing her official champion, for the Hon. F. S. Dymoke, who holds the office of Queen's Champion by inheritance, is lying dangerously ill at his coun- try seat, Scrivelsby Court, Lincoln, shire. Tile"Champion of England," for that is his official title, only ap— pears once during the reign of a. British monarch—namely, at the coronation. While the coronation banquet is in progress, which has hitherto always' taken place in Westminster, Hall, the champion rides in on horseback, arrayed from head to foot in steel armor and with closed visor. Raising the vizor, he challenges all comers to, deny the title of the sovereign, and offers if necessary to fight them on the spot. It is need less to adtl that no one is ever found to take up the gauntlet which he casts down on the floor. A gol— den goblet full of wine is then hand- ed to him, which he drains to the health of the monarch, after which he backs his charger from the .royal presence, carrying with him the magnificently chased golden goblet as his perquisite. The office is a very ancient one, and is popularly supposed to have been instituted by William the Con- queror, who conferred it upon Robert de Marmion with the castle of Tam- worth and the manor of Scrivelsby. At the coronation of Richard II. the. office was claimed by Sir John Dy- moke, of Scrivelsby Manor, and Baldwin de Trevill, of Tamworth Castle. It was finally decided that the title of champion of England went with the manor of Scrivelsby and belonged to Sir John Dymoke, in whose family it has remained until the present day. Should Mr. Dymoke die it will be bis nearest male relative who will inherit the manor and office. A short time ago, in the course of my work as a reporter, I found myself hi a' low soloon waiting for the proprietor.. I had. noticed as I came in three men andplay- ing a boy - p y ing cards in a corner. Dirty and unkempt, coarse and loud voiced, their hand came down on the table with a bang each time a card was played, while through the game a running fire of profanity was kept up, punctuated by the sound of the the tobacco juice as it spat- tered on the dirty floor. I turned my back on them and was thinking of other things, when I was brought back to my surroundings by the 'strains of a hymn, the first I ever learned so long ago in such a different place. The boy was softly singing to himself : There is a happy land, Far, far away, Where saints in glory stand, Bright, bright as day. Oh, how they sweetly sing. Worthy is our Savior Ring, Loud let His praises ring, Praise, praise lot aye. My mind flew back to the night when I heard these salve words sung by a little band of Jamaicans in the swam of Aspinwall, and further back still to the time when ONE Pm: A Day. t 4 E OF a1; MAN W180 HASAiP.8 014N 4 l; I•k RUN nose. The experience of the manufacture of the " Myrtle Navy" tobacco is a valuable lesson in political eccuomy. Previous to their commencing that brand, the tobacco made of the finest Virginia leaf, was always held at fancy prices, and put, up in some fanny style of manfacture. It was thought that only the rich would buy suoh tobacco, and at tt e old prices none but the rich could buy it. The makersoftlie"Myrtle Navy' resolved to strip the manufacture of the tobacco of all its fanny costs and put their profit at so low a rate that no com- petitor could possibly undersell them with the same quality of article. From the very first, until now, their rate of profit has been a uniform percentage upon the cost. Itis their enormoue sales which make their low rate of profit a satisfactory one in the aggregate, and also gives them their firm hold upon the market. Their success is an excellent lesson for manufacturers to study over. —Henry H. Dell, a highly re- spected pioneer of Norfolk county, died in Simcoe on Saturday, aged seventy-five years.
