Sunflowers aro cultivated in Rus- sia on a large scale. The crop ie prolific and about cue and a half ><its a pound aro realized for the Wild from which oil is expressed :and the refuse made into oil cake, while other portioua of the plant are also used for cattle Toed. Tho mule party in the House of Commons, consisting of Cartwright, Lister and a dozen or so others, are aptly described in the poet's lines : Io error obstinate, in wra•lgling lou. 1, k' tr tr'fi•+a eager, positive, and prowl ; Diep iu the dark fleas of dull traitors bred, With nothing but ohetructiuu iu their head. The American Congress appropri- ations this year for miscellaneous purpoaesanwuuted to $18 per head of the population ns againet an ex- penditure of $8 per head in Canada. If Canada taxed herself iu the situ o ratio as the United States we could aeon wipe out our public dent. But posterity will get the greatest benefit from the expenditures which have created our nat;onal debt and it is oiniuently fair that poeterity shall help to pay it. The Montreal Starstarted a screed entitled ','flow to fill the North west," Tie Grit papers hive very generally copied it. The gist of the suggestions is t•1 110 away with protection and all the farmers in Ontario will only be too glad to exodust to the Northwest. But all the farmers in Outario do not want to go to tbe• Northweat. The mej- oril.y of them are doing very well, thank you, and prefer that the Northwest should be settled mostly by immigrants from beyond tho sc+a• and this is being done this season at an unprecedented rate. • In 1.790 the population of British North Ainerica wad love than 200,- 400, while that of the United Steles was 3,920,21.4; or twenty times as great. Tho Doininiun census of 1891' shows our population to be 4,829,411, while that of the Uuitrd States, by the census of 1890, we,e 62,622,250, about thirteen to one. The "greatest nation out of doors' call prate about its progress and stuff jelly fish Canadians with how :such smarter they are than the other white ,poople of this continent to which we belong. But if histori- eat accuracy ie adhered to and stern statistics to be relied upon, the greater Britan comprised in thio Canada of ours can go our Yankee neighbors one bettor and rake in the "pot." And on this 24th 'of May we exultingly shout "God Save The Queen," under whose be- nign rule Canada` has accomplished greater things in a given time than has ever fallen to the lot of any people in the the world to do. The +by-elections in North Perth last Thursday resulted in the return of Grieve, the unseated Grit member, by about the same major- ty as in 1891. This was unexpect- ed by outsiders,b.ut those acquainted with the condition of affairs in the in the Riding, the diaeensious arnong the Conservatives and the personal popularity of Mr. Grieve, forecast the result. The Grit candidate did better in the towns than his Con- servative opponent. The town- ships did better for the Conserva- tives than formerly. Mr. Grieve's majority in 891 was 71, last week it was 87. It is well to have a rift in the clouds once in a while so that the Grits can have the benefit of a little sunshine. The Government ie strong enough without North Werth and the result will please the *Perth without doing the Coneerva- tives any harm. In fact this view was an important factor in the con- test, many Conservatives being in- different as to the result, and with characteristic generosity refrained from punishing too severely a party that is so utterly weak, even as they individually would refrain from punishinga personal opponen t -when unable to defend himself. SOFT SOAP -TWO KLND•4. — t, This is this time of the year and these are the days when the good wife's voice is head, saying : "Hus- band, I wish yoq'd set up Vie leach and start it, for I want to make.soap, and as soon as I get that done I want to commence houseoleauing." And. said husband—if he is a good one, aud what he ought to be -- will straightway "set up " the leach, put on the water and a sad, sober taco, draw a sigh ur two, and yield to the inevitable with the same resigna- tion which should be shown in an at, tack of the measles or other similar ailment. For the benefit of other husbands let me tn.) say that I "took time by the forelock' and matte a permanent 1 ach, with a cover, iii which the ash; es are deposited as made, and when "soap time" comes around all 1 have to do is to put on the water, place the kettle, fix a stn rrer, put in the soap grease (whew ! 1) curry the re- sulting soap to the barrel, put the kettle back in its place, empty the leach, give setup genera) directions and lots of specific instruction (iiug• ling these with sighs, groans and. complaining), and wife does all .the rest of the soap making As I was -carrying the soap to the. barrel - dipping it fromthe keetlo- 1 thought soft-soap and folks are a good (neat alike atter all. Soap is a combination of flesh, fat, bones and lye—so are Yolks, mostly. Soap seems so jolly as it goes "kerslump" into the barrel, but how it will bite, it it has a chance 1 So will folks ; back -bite and bite hack every chance they get ; but the world is cleaner, and therefore better for haying soft. snap, and I hope it is better for hay-. ing tolks also even if some do have too much grease, and others too 'much lye (lie). One kind of soft-soap which is such an article of commerce nowa- days, and for which there is a great call, is nut a really bad thing, if only rightly ,wade up and judiciously ap• plied ; but to be -a reat-sucoess, every thing—the ingredients, and toe ap- plinations— must be just right ; there must not be too much grease (pale ver). Neither is too much lye (lie) allowable ; also the patient should be in the right condition—kind o -want- ing some ob this tonin in order that it may be really efficacious—it should not be too thin, nor should it be spread on too thick; or it may do more harm than good and "raise hob" with all concerned. No doubt soft soap— of both kinds —has its proper place and uses, and while the first kind mentioned is not regarded as soothingto the eyes, the latter kind is often very soothing and cooling to the ire.
