• A WATERLOO VETERAN,
T1R.
W. CHAMBERS OF DRESDEN,
QN',1 AGED 106 YEARS,
31r. A. B. Powell writeel he Lon..
doll Free Press :—
short time ago 1 read an article
in your paper entitled, "The last to
die," having reference to the last of
t)ae ►groes of Waterloo. It was
theln stated that Lieut. Maurice
8IIaw'e death closed the last life of
those great mea who stood so firmly
by the Duke • of Wellington and
helped him win glory for grand old
Britain, and for the commander
whose memory the British nation
loves to honor.
-I ata greatly pleased to bo able
to bring under your notice, as one
of 3onr constant readers and cub.
scribers of your very valuable paper
the name of a worthy wan who not
only fought at. „Waterloo, but wan
through the whole of the Peninsular
war. This gentleman's name ie Mr.
Williem Chambers. He lives with -
his daughter in the town. of Dres
den, county of Kent, Ontario. The
writer of this had the great pleasure
and satisfaction of having several
conversations with Mr. Chambers.
His intellect is as clear se it ever,
, was, the only defect is his •hearing is
not very good. He ,can carry on a
conversation with much strength
and intelligence, and gives a .most
vivid description of his early life in
the army.
Mr. Chambers was born in the
county of Antrim, Ireland, on the
12th of September, 1887. At this
date he has, as you will see, entered
on his loth year : or in other words
if be lives until the 12th of Septem
ber next he will be 106 years old.
He gave me one of his photogra
phs, which he had taken recently in
the town of Chatham, where .he oc-
casionally goes to transact some
business matters. His education
was carefullyelooked after in his-
early
isearly days, and the late Dr. Ryer-
son, the father of our educational
system of Ontario, recognized his
fitness as an educationist, and ap•
pointed him to act as inspector of
some of the schools in the county of
Kent, a position he was well cap-
able of filling. Hes family history
is most remarkable, from the fact
that. no lesa.thee eighteen. of his re.
latives were in the army during the
Peninsular war and most of them
were engaged in the Battle of
Waterloo. He informed me that he
enlisted in Dublin in 1808; being
at that date in his 21st year. His
General was St. John Moore, who
was figting the celebrated Marshal
Sault. He was bought out of the
army whilst his regiment was in
France in 1816. Ho came to Cana-
da in 1811, was a captain in the
Canadian rebellion, having a coin
pony under his command and sever-
al Indians. IIe spent two years in
the service of Canada. His many
recollections 'of early Canadian in-
cidents and history aro not only ins
a
teresting but profoundly full of fact
sad point.. ,rhe k4 .....4.,11.1' greats
years and wide experience both in
the Old and New World make him
one of the interesting personalities
of this present age. Iri discussing
questions of the past and present
age with.thits worthy man of years,
he said to me that be did not think
that men of to -day,• whether these
men occupy representative or minor
positions in our land, or in other
lands, have the same high regard for
honor or truth as when he was
younger, Said he, when I was is
young man a man's word was his
honor, and his honor, was only for-
feited by his death if circumstances
required it. He often heard Gideon
Ously, the famous Irish preacher,
preach. He also knew both Charles
and John Wesley, as each of them
often were guests in the borne of his
family and relatives in Ireland.
He -further paid to me that he had
attended 'the Methodist,ehurch for
100 years. I had the pleasure to
worebip in .the same church with
this man Witte on one Sunday,"on
"the 6th March.
Many other facie in relation to
.this remarkable man could he given;
but as my letter has got ,so lengthy
I must close, as I considered the
foregoing facts of sufflcieninterest
to the many readers of your paper
to let you know that one man still
lives who can boast not only a long
life, but a life crowded full of a most
interesting history to the people of
this western peninsula.
