ABOUT EARLY SEEDING.
IMPORTANCE OF GETTING THE SEED
INTO SOIL UNDER FAVORABLE
CONDITIONS.
One of the principal advantages
in getting the spring crops in early
is that the plants, having s -better
opportunity to get Well established,
are it) a much bet ter, condition to
withstand the hot, dry weather of
summer. Plants that are stunted
in the early stages of growth

With nearly all spring crops, es-
pecially in the field, earliness is
quite an item in securing the best
growth and yield, yet it is rarely
good economy to risk a slow, poor
germination of the seed and an u

they germinate causes more
or less loss of vitality that, when
the best growth and yield are de,
sired, it is best to avoid. Under
present conditions if a fair profit is
realized a good yield is necessary
and in many cases a fair yield can
be made to return a fair profit While
a light' yield will be made at a
positive 1088. Hence it is i..uport-
ant to take every precaution to
secure the hest growth and yield in
order to lessen the'coet and increase
the profits.
These things are itnportant :
Good seed carefully planted in
thoroughly prepared soil so as to in-
sure a quick, vigorous germination
and growth and a good even stand.
I failure in either of these respects
will affect the yield. At • the start
it is best to take every precaution to
plant under as favorable conditions
as possible, and with such crops RE
require it, give thorough cultiva•
tion.

St. Paul Min., April 4.—Spec-
ials from the north-west tell of a
big rain and snow storm, the latter
prevailing with terrific forbe in the
Dakotas, even approaching to a bliz-
zard ii intensity in some sections.
Devils Lake reporta a full-fledged
blizzard, while Bedfield, down in
South Dakota, telegraphed at 6
o'clock to -night that a genuine bliz-
zard had been raging since noon
and hourly growing worse. At
litiron the snow during the day
nattered a geat deal of rain, nearly
three inches having fallen. But the
blizzard seems to have extended
from the northern part of South
Dakota:clear across North Dakota.
The snow extended along the Mis-
souri River into the Blackhills, and
at Huron, where it had rained so
hard during the day, it is snowing
hard to•night.. The amount of
moisture in:the ground hae already
retarded seeding ten days, and it
will now be further set back by this
great storm of combined rain and

blizzard attaahments, is reported in
