In hie budget speech Hon. Mr.
Foster gave figures of the consump-
tion of beer, liquor an tobacco for
each person in the Dominion for
three periods of titne. 1. the aver-
age consumption each year aiuce
confederution. 2. Average cou-
sutnption in 1890. 3. Average
consumption last year. The figures
are ',
Per capita consumption of 'ignore and tobacco.

Average from 1890.91...363 8 232 .102 2.033
The facts iudicated by these fig•

figures show n decrease in the con
sumption of every article named ;
while cumpared with the average
since confederation the people of
Canada to -day are drinking lose li •
quor and wine and u8iug less toba-

evor, more beer drunk. But as the
quantity consumed even of that viae
less last year than the year before,
tampereuce people need net grow

and meeting him last Tuesday oven••

miscue, and s(tet a desperate struggle
Spence was overpowered and drag-
ged to the mounted police barracks.
Au examination was held by the
magistrate on Wednesday, and the
prisoner was eomitted to the assizes
for trial, bail being refused,
—A case exciting soma conaider-
able interest was tried at the assizes
yesterday at 'Walkerton. The
plaintiff, John Lockman, a resident
of Teeswater sued Robert White-.
Ulan, the unmarried son of a prowl!).
rut and well off fanner in the town-
ship of Culross, for the seduction
of his daughter, Elizabeth Lockman,
whilst at service at his father's
house. The defendant denied the
charge on oath`vigoroudly, and sup•
ported his case by witnesses called
with a view to throw doubt on the
testimony of the girl. The exhibi-
tion of the baby to the jury as
strong evidence for the plaintiff was
a feature of the plaiutifl'a case. The
jury found for the .plaintiff and $.600
damages.
TESTED SPRING WHEAT.
Samples of the 53 varieties of
spring wheat grown upon the
Ontario College Experimental Sta-
tion farm in 1891 were submitted
to the Dominion Millers' Associa-
tion at a largely atteuded meeting.
Niue varieties were pronounced by
the Committee as first-class for
milling purposes. They stand in
* the following order, viz.: -1. Red
Fife ; 2. Pringle's Champion ; 3.
Red Fern ; 5. Rio Grande ; 5
Heriaon Bearded; 6. Holben'a Im
proved, 7. Odessa (Mirka; 8. Col-
orado, and 9. VWThite Russian.. Of
the ten varieties of spring wheat
which have given the highest yields
for the three years ending with
1891 the Herison Beard comes first
in point of yield, stands stiff in the
straw and has been almost entirely
free from rust ; the- -club shaped
heads aro somewhat uneven: The
simple. Pringle's Champion pro-
duces strong 'straw, has a good
shaped head, is not much liable to
rust, and 'produces a fine sample of
grain. The McCarlin variety ob-
tained from Eastern Ontario, and
grown for the first time at this sta-
tion in 1891, stands first in point
ell yield of the varieties introduced
that year. The yield was 37 bushels
per acre.
