An accident. which may prove
fatal, occurrgd near here on Tues
day morning. The unfortunate
person is Richard Walter, of East
\Vawanoah who was skidding loge
iu his bush, Mr. Walter had hi■
right leg against the and of a log
and wile getting into position "ea
large, knotted and knarled maple,
and as the team attached thereto
was moving it the log became
balanced and swung around' with
great force, striking the leg which
was against the end of the log just
below the knee and almost mashing
it into a pulp. Doctors Tamlyn and
Chisholm were immediately sum-
moned and did all that was possible
under the circumstances.. ,T -hey saw
that amputation was beat, but the
sufferer would not listen to it.

The Orange Ledge here will hold

Port Abert
The political fight goes bravely
on,. and the Hon. J. C. Patterson,
Secretary of State, is gaining a
stronger good will of the people at
each meeting. Ho is ably assisted
by the hero of Haldimand, Dr.
Montague, who ie a host in himself
on a public platform. They carry
everything by storm when ever they
speak.
Tho meeting at Kingsbridge on
Wednesday last was a sore one from
a Grit point of view. Daniel of tbo
Signal, alias Ajax, put in an appear-
ance for the purpose of crushing the
Conservative party. He got the
floor for half an hour but his fierce
denunciation of the present admin-
istration did not take worth a cent.
Then Dr.Ivion tague took the floor
and, ye gods and little fishes, the
fur flew at every sweep. Poor Ajax
had not a leg to stand on, and ho
wished that ho never was born.
At the conclusion of the meeting a
few of the "Grit pets" kicked up
a row which was disgraceful and
some pretty hard language was in-
dulged in. The worthy Reeve,
"Joe" taking a hand in. However,
as the blackthornes were not
brought into play there was no
person kilt. Some persons who
voted for the Reform candidate at
the last election declared they
would now vote for Patterson and
good Government.
The Grit meeting at Port Albert on
Thursday, evening was. a fizzle of
fizzlea. About 7.40 M. C,Cameron,
Q. C„ ex -M. f'., J. T. Garrow, Q.
C., M. L. A., and D. McGillicuddy,
editor of the Signal, arrived at the
school house. Five minutes later
Mr. Larke, of Oshawa ; Snyder, of
Haldimand ; Radcliffe, of Goderich;
and P. Kelly, of Blyth, who had
been waiting at the hotel for the
li eyitlttiO hour, put in an appear-
tqlhbe ln'tite interest of Mr. Patter'
On. ,,or some reason beet known
Mr. Cameron left for the
Rotel, &td the Grit whipper -in was
in the net of blowing out the lights
Wren tome of the opposite party
sly the up again. It was a plain
,ase th$t the Tories were masters of
the situation, and after some con•
ttiderable talk and exproeeione of
disgusts Grit and Tory left for the
hotel when Mr. Larke received
aoveral telegrams and read them out
to the publi' ..iviag Tory victories
all o . e Dominion. Several
s and, Tories expressed a wish
to hear Mr.Larlte discuss the several
queatioge of the day, as from his
pleasant appearance and gentle-
manly conduct he was a " favorite"
with the crowd, but all were
doomed to disappointment and the
Grit apeakere returned to the county
town eadder but wiser men.
Slap—bang—here we are again,
straight ioto another political fight,
and ready—yea ready. We are
ready for the fray, loaded for bare or
anything in the shape of a Canrer-
oniau. That class's usefulness is
gone and West Huron asks their
services no longer. Any level
headed fellow who has the interest
of this riding uppermost in his
mind must come to the conclusion
that the lion. J. C. Patterson,Secre-
tary of State, is the man for Galway.
Taking a cool and quiet look into
the present riding situation, or the
state of affairs that exiete at the
capital, there is no getting over
the fact that the Conservative party
will have their "innings" at Ottawa
during the next four years, and it
would be madness on the part of
the electors of this riding to send a
member to oppose them, more
especially when we have such a
grand opportunity of sending a
Cabinet Minister as our representa-
tive. West Huron (especially thia
northern part) has been neglected
during the past ten years, but the
time is right here when we have a
grand opportunity of placing a
member of high repute in Parlia-
ment who will have the power to
assist ne from the fact that a Cabinet
Minister's influence.is as much over
a private supporter of a government
as is a private supporter of a gov-
ernment over an Oppositionist.
Aud the Hon. Mr. Patterson is a
gentleman in every mange -of the -
word, and his word is as good as his
bond,:alwaps happy and 'willing to
look after the interest of his menet*'
uente. Liberal in his views he ha
endeared himself to people of every
creed, class and race. Your tie lbe
has had the pleasure of meeting thie
gentleman on two occasions, once
in Toronto and once at Ottawa.
Now is the time, Electors of West
Huron 1 A long pull, a strong
pull, and a pull altogether and you
will never regret it.
