'711;3 ,object, of the interview wax to • *stidit tiny now facts which might be ascertainable in connection with the Carruthers crime, but almost as saaeou as the conversation began Mr. _Rance started off to tell a story of a xfatieide which was committed but a :tort time previous to the murder -send which is full of thrilling inti•. tents, The narrative had never teen published, and this, together with the fact that it was committed liver a year ago and in, a district of yit"ue province of Ontario, Horde it peculiarly interesting. Mr. Rance, who had been engaged in the mer +c tont tailoring business at Clinton, removed with his wife three winters aago to Rat Portage, where he has Entine pursued his vocation. His business consists chiefly in the trade .that is done with the men in the tutnber"woods along the Rainy river. Le purchased a pair of speedy pac- ing ells, and decided to make a tour s f the river, which is 200 miles in 'I'ength, every winter. The shanty- itaen would order their clothing when be came along and call for them at Rat Portage in the spring after the snow had left the ground. It was through one of these expe- ditions, a year ago this winter, that ise came to be familiar with the facts Of the suicide. Mr. Rance arrived +zt Fotheringbam's mills, which, it will be remembered, was where Car- ruthers worked, and almost exactly .likalf way between the Lake of the Woods and Rainy. Lake. While there he measured for a suit of eiothes the man who but an hour Hater was foully murdered it is al, foged by his own wife. Mr. Rance, •at, few minutes before the crime is raid: to have been committed, pro, seeded on his journey up to the bead of the river- After calling at all. the shanties along the route he arrived at Fort Frances about eight days later: The fort is situated just at the deka of Rainy river and where that stream draws its waters 6lle;.m the lake of. the same name 'this is where the celebrated Macs te:stele government locks are built sand the most beautiful site for a city i°n all that great northern dis trict. He found a village of about 200 inhabitants, two hotels, a few estates and a couple of churches. It was evening when he arr.-ved there and, according to his i' irections, went to the Couchichil'rg (which means the head of waters) hotel, teept by a man named George A. '&tineon. M'r, Rance bad his sup- per, •learned that the proprietor of the place was away from his home, and went early to bed in order that Iieee might' $ esat -daybreak -to, ,the •anties above the fort on the Luke. lie was the only guest at the hotel that Might, and as he sat at the 'breakfast table the next morning Urea Stinson, the wife of the 'books keeper, came into the diningroom in , a state of nervous excitement, Mr. Rance inquired as' to what might be a the trouble, and she stated that she had a terrible dream, but in order for him to understand what she meant she would have to explain to hints what bad occurred about four weeks previously. "About- Dec. 20 last (that would be 1890)," she began "a foreigner came to our hotel -from the lumber woods down .the (river. He was suffering from a cut `amt the leg and had come 'here to :stay until he recovered. He could eaot speak English, but he was a gentlemanly fellow and we were mac$ interested in him. He could mut even give us itis name, but knowing that he was a Norwegian we called him 'the Swede.' On •filmristmas day he disappeared and tett person about the village has seen hint since. A thorough search was made for him both at the fort and down at the shanties where he •.herd been working, but without avail. Las night, continued Mrs. Stinson, uC dreamt that I saw 'the Swede' hanging by the neck somewhere sear this hotel." Mr. Rance, with a view to paci- fying the agitated woman, volunteer- •ei to snake another search in order that elle might be reassured that the foreigner had left the fort. He started out and found several barns 't' at d etabies surrounding the hotel. A. visit to each one of these build - 'tinge was paid and a dilligent search insole, and, after an hour had been spat in walking beams and climb - jag .girders, he started for the house satisfiet,1 that there was no dead man -shout the premises. Just as he watt bout to enter the aide door of the hotel he noticed a tall shanty adjoining the house proper. He -+f ttt towards the place, found that aboard bad boon tQrn from the,ei Jat;go, enough for the adrniaoion of plan's body and entered. It coo be exon that. the building' was n in usq an4 Dir. Ranee ivas ago about.: to start back, satisfied not ing was wrong, 'w -hen he. One causally up, into a narrow nook the corner of the roof and "caw wh he believed to be the back of mans coat. With the assiotan of a ladder Mr, Ranee, clifebeel to ti roof, on 'looking toward the corn he was terrified to see a wan ban ing by the neck, his legs stickit out in horizontal position, an o claypipe between the teeth, an body` frozen stiff. He came dow in a fainting condition and repor ed the revelation to the .villager who soon congregated at the shant The frozen body was left where was found until nearly noon, who the proprietor of the hotel returne home and ordered it to be.eut dow! A fire wan built in the street of th fort and the body of "the Swede placed alongside of it. After a fe hours the amateur undertaker were able to straighten the limb and arms of the unfortunate, an made preparations for the buria When this had been done all tha remained of the poor "Swede" wa carted down to the river bank. Be fore removing the clothing from th dead man it was suggested by on of the shanty men that the pocket be searched, and to him was assign ed the duty. Soon all the pocket but one, the ihside waist -coat pocket were turned inside out withou showing any contents. When th shanty titan felt in the waistcoat, h exclaimed, "Here's something boys," and drew out a large sheep skin wallet and a letter addressed to a woman in Copenhagen, Den- mark. The mail left the fort on the following day and the letter, unop- ened, was dispatched to its destina- ton, tile name and address being kept by the proprietor of the Couch, jolting. When the wallet was op- ened it was found to contain $350 in Canadian bills. It was evident then that "the Swede" had committ- ed suicide, although no cause was given unless contained in the letter, an answer to which has never since reached the shanties. The body was then -stripped, and, according to custom, a long sharp stake driven through the abdomen in order that it might not be carried away in case the waters of the river became swop len, Last November a party of sur- veyors went up into that district, and among their number was a young -graduate in arts of the Tor- onto university, who is at present pursuing the study of medicine at McGill, Montreal. The surveying party heard about the Fort Frances suicide when they were o.bout thir- ty miles 1`row the head of the riser, and the medical student, who. by .the way, stood on the 13. A. list of '90 at Toronto Varsity, manifested a peculiar interest in the affair. The reason for this was made known a few ,nights afterwards, when he persuaded three of his fellow sur, veyors to accompany him to the fort, ostensibly for the purpose of having a time, but in reality to him in taking possession of the skeleton of "the Swede." They started out one moonlight night, and after a few miles bad been traversed the medical aspirant divulged his secret. The other°members-ofthe'party-.con- sented, and on they went. Be- tween two and throe o'clock in the morning they reached the spot where the skeleton was believed to be. They found the snow very deep at this point, and in order to secure the prize they had to go quietly to the fort and get four spades. They worked away for some time shovel- ling away the snow, when at Last one of the blades of the blades o the spade clinked harshly against the bard bones. The rattling noise which followed aroused a pack of shanty dogs in the immediate neigh, borhood, and these animals attack- ed the maratiders so fiercely that they were glad to be permitted to decamp for their liyes. Tho doge kept vigilant guard over the spot for a time, and the bones of the Swede are still to be seen on the banks of the Rainy river, and last summer there wail some talk of 'ar- resting the medical student for corns. plicity in the death of the unknown Swede, but Mr. Ranee's statements puts the quietus upon the suggea- tion of foul play in the matter. de Id at In 11. ed in at ce ►e er Id d n t• 8, y. it n d 0 w 8 s i. s 0 e s 8 t e 0 CAUTION.
