The rent problem is the mo serioue ef all financial problems to the ma ef Modne in New York. Th ,oitybait an area of 41 square miles, i which there is a population of nearly 1,800 Q00, -while Philadelphia, with over 129 mile ef territory, bee something over 1,040,00 habitants. There is an average of 63 *mew feet of space to each inhabitant , New York, while there is an average o '.3,425 square feet for each inhabitant o e Philadelphia. There is still room, hoevever,fo raeny more people in New York, although i one district the population is denser than i arty other part of the world. But New Yor •Is long and narrow, with the business "cen •e ter'a,t the southern extremity, and, wit imperfect systems of rapid transit, thi rendere the house problem much more diffi it than in other cities. It is not surprising, therefore, to leer • frora the Federal census of 1890 that Nel 'York, with 312,766 families, has only 81, 82e3 dwellings, while Philadelphia, wit • 205,135 families, has 187,052 dwellings. I -New York there are over 18e persons t every dwelling on an average, while i Ilailadelphia there are only a little ove 5i. These statistics explain in a measure , why it is that rents are so high in New York., A whole house in New York is a luxury that comparatively few people can enjoy. Only 37,604 families out of 312,766 'live in houses containing no other families. Over 42 per cent. of all the dwellings in New York are tenement houses. There are ' 8,672 dwellings which contain 10 families and over each there are 7,385 in which Bye from seven to nine families, there are 2,934 which contain six families, and there are 3,551 which contain five families. ,Over one-fourth of all the dwellings contain an average of over twenty persons each. The condition of things in thie city so increases the totals for the whole State that while in the entire Unit- ed Stites the average number of persons to a dwelling is 5.45, the average in New York State is 6.70, which is more than any • other State of the TJnion. It is not strange therefore that this city should be the land- lord's paradise. Here many a man is oblig- ed to give one-fourth to one-third of his in - Tome to-theeksiedlined—The purchase of a house, even on the instalment plan, be- comes here an undertaking which few per- sons are courageous enough to enter upon. Apartments in a flat house rent for more than whole houses do in other cities, and even two or three rooms in a tenement cost as much as a little dwelling elsewhere. It in this condition of things that ha a con- tributed to the rapid growth of Brooklyn and the suburbs of the metropolis, where land is cheaper and rents are lower than they can possibly be in the city.—New York Letter to Philadelphia Ledger. lo as ti. ae 88 he he at e of 11 11 11 n Religion and Art. hi iiiicient times there lived a seer, Who knew all hidden lore, And to hirn came one day with fear A darkened soul some truth to hear, Some token to implore. "Tell me, wise father, canst thou see Beyond this gloomy haze, • A wider, purer Iifelor me, A land where light and love svill be, _ A heaven with light ablaze? "Or shall 1 here forever dwell, Plunged in a mist of woe, Bound with a soul benumbing spell, Writhing amid the pains of hell. Tell me, what dost thou know ?" The graybeard stroked his chin and said : "There is no heaven for thee. Forever to thy horny bed Of dreary visions art thou wed. The dawn thou ne'er wilt see." Another day there came a lad The aged seer to see, His vamp was not grim or sad, His trilling songs made all things glad So hill he was of glee. "Wise father," quoth the smiling boy, "I love the pine tree's shade, The blue sky tills my bean with joy. Tell me! Will death all this destroy f Will all the sunshine fade? Thy night will never be." —H. H. Heath. Beautiful Italian Women. "lite prettiest women in the world are ehose of Northern Italy," said Henry C. Bartow, who has just completed a trip around the world, and is resting at the 'Southern. "Pretty is not exactly the word to be used in describing them. A wax doll may be pretty. The women of Northern Italy are gloriously, maddeningly beautiful. They are a mixture of the French gentry and the old Italian nobility, and inherit the -vivacity of one country and the voluptuous, half oriental beauty of the other. If you want to understand what the poet meant by the 'dark eyes' splendor' go not to the Vale of Cashmere, not to Cadiz, but to Milan. Greece in her palmiest days could not produce such perfect figures. nor Spain such coquette. Add to unrivalled beauty of face and figure the sweet cadences of the Italian tongue, and I defy any youngster to get away from Milan without regret. Some one has said that Italian is the mother tongue of the Goddess of Love; certainly there is nothing sweeter—it is melody itself."—St. Louis Globe -Democrat. Barley as Food. Barley equals rice and oats for its yield of phosphorous, magnesia, soda, potash and ether ealines. Every pound of barley meal skews 2,500 grains of carbon and 33 grains of nitrogen. Analysie also reveals a con- siderable proportion of iron, and it is these food properties that made it so vaulable to the Greeks, who trained their athletes on it. E. T. Kensington, F. C. These two places are the only ones in the United States where red snow is known. The phenomenon is due to the presence of minute ani- malculm in the snow.
