As in the glimmering light I at,
My heart was strangely moved
With the thoughts that o'er my spirit stole
In the (Alai, sweet solitude.
I thought of the years that past had flown,
Years fraugbt with grief and pain;
And my heart cried out in its aching void
For eorae of earth's pleasure and. gain.
But alas the hope as worthless seems
As the baubles that float on the tide,
For the joys that my heart holds dearest
Thou hest long from me denied. [far
And 01 I asked, why is it thus?
Bruised, torn by the chastening rod,
Till life seenas only one long, long strain,
To wreck our faith in a God-!
Some few as happy and carelese seem
As the birds that blithely sing;
But how many, oh, how many there are
Lie slain by life's venomous sting.
Lives, too, that were pure and honest,
Lives epent in the service of God,
And lives that sacrificed cherished desires,
From naught but pure love to their Lord.
Yet still they were poor in earth'. treasure,
Far poorer than many to -day,
Who, dressed in their robes of selfish de-
light,
Curse God in their hearts night and day.
Long suffering, sickness and pain.
Seemed all that was given them here;
And me thinks the ory oft went up to the
skies,
"Lord, now long wilt thou keep me here?"
Why is it? my heart onoe more queried;
And a voice whispered soft on my ear;
"Dear child, I know that ye suffer and
groan,
But think you life ends with thee here?
"The path you are treading—I trod it,
The anguish you suffer—I bore,
Not a drop in your life's bitterest anguish
and woe [more.
That I drained not, and more, yea, far
"Have ye wandered homeless and lone,
Despised and rejected of men,
A life only ended at last by the shame
Of a cross your limbs to extend ?

For the darkest yateve passed through

Compared to the pangs of your Saviour and
Who suffered that you might be bought.
"Then why: my child, wilt thou marmur?
Tpermit only What is thy good;
And if at times it seems harsh and severe,
Remember, I give to all food.
"Sometime you will see more clearly,
Why your Father sendeth you care;
All I ask now is faith in my guidance,
And a bright crown in heaven you'll wear.
" 'Twont be lon till your hands will be
folded,
Your work here on earth will be clone;
And your angel -hand clasped in dear ones
above,
Who are waiting to welcome you home.
"Then dear, weary child, be strong.hearted,
Do the task I set you with care, [away,
Till my messenger angels shall bear you
Safe home to the goal of your prayer."

IN THE ovngR.
It rarely happens that a boodle of
hank notes, accidentally dropped in
the street, remains for a matter of half
an hour in a crowded thoroughfare,
without someone picking it up. Very
luckily, however, for a young man em-
ployed as a messenger for a firm of
London brokers, this was the case some
time ago. The yoting man was hurry-
ing through a crowded street, when he
let fall a bundle of notes of the value
of forty-five thousand dollars. He
went his way unaware of the fact; but
half an hour later, having discovered
his loss, he retraced his steps in a ter-
ribly excited state of .oind, peering in-
to every nook and corner which seemed
likely to furnish a hiding place. Pre-
- eisely--at the spot -where the valuable
packet had fallen there was a pineapple
stall, and of the owner of the same—
and old woman—he enquired, in a
trembling voice, whether she had seen
anything of his lost treasure.
A. lucky chance had guided him to
the right person. She had noticed a
bundle of papers that fell close to her
stall; but being busily engaged at the
nioznent in slicing her pineapples for
sale, she had kicked the parcel into the
gutter. And, by good luck, in the gut-
ter, along with a quantity of street
rubbish, the *essenger found the pre-
cious parcel. which had lain there un-
noticed by the crowd of pedestrians.

The Fall NM:fiber of the Canadian Grocer
and General Storekeeper is an admirable
issue. Its 80 pages, teeming with matt:
of vital importance to the most numerous
class of merchants in the country, are en-
closed in a cover that captivates on sight.
The harrnonzing of the rioh oolors with
each other, and with the design is a triumph
of good taste, and of the fitness of things.
The contents of the issue are worthy
of their beautiful envelope. They
comprise articles written expressly for
this edition, by special writers and expert
contributors, upon a wide range of subjects
strictly germane to gro3ery trade, and
treated with rare grasp and clearness of in-
sight; full and concisely written market re-
ports upon everything carried in grocery
stock; and a budget of faultlessly displayed
advertisements, in which all the leading
hout,es engaged in the production or whole-
sale distribation of groceries have a place.
The number is a credit to a paper which is
accepted by Canadian Grocers and General

that pertains to their trade. The Canadian

POISONED BY SCROFULA
Is the sad story of many lives made miser-
able through no fault of their own. Sera,
ula is more especially than any other a
hereditary disease, and for this eimple
reason. Arising from impure and insuffic-
ient blood, the disease locates itself in the
lymphaties, which are composed of white
tissues; there is a period of foetal life when
the whole body consists of white tissues,
and therefore the unborn child is especial-
ly susceptible to this dreadful disease.
But there is a remedy for scrofula, whether
hereditary or acquired. It is Hood's Sar-
saparilla, which by its powerful effect
on the blood, expells all trace of dieease
and gives ,to the vital fluid the quality
and color of health. If you decide to take
Hood's Sarsaparilla do not accept any
substitute.

In commenting upon a special account
of the condition of the British crops, pub-
lished in its columns, the London Times
says:—The conclusion • on the whole case
is that the present year will be a diastrous
one for the British farm. The chief loss
will be wheat, while there will be no ade-
quate set-off in any other crop. The out-
look for the winter is geoomy for all class
es, and it becomes a grave question how
many farmers will be able to struggle
through it.
Minard's Liniment lumbermeaa's friend
A two-year-old child of Mr G. Barton's
Turnberry, met with a nasty accident on
Thursday evening. An old sow has a litter
of small pigs, and the child and a boy of
seven years were together, when the latter
picked up one of the little porkers, which
immediately set up a terrible racket, calling
the attention of the mother, and maddening
it so that it ran at the children like a wild
beast. Seeing this the boy dropped the pig
and grabbed instead the child, but in bis
haste he ran too fest, and the result was ho
and the child fell. No sooner down than
the old sow was onto the little one, and
commenced savagely chewing at the child's
head, lacerating and tearing the flesh in the
neighborhood of one ear in a horrible man-
ner, the boy meanwhile calling lustily for
help and endeavoring to save the child.
Help came at last, and with the assistance
or. a fork the savage old brute was driven off.

Electricity, as applied by the
Owen Electric Belt,
Is now recognized as the greatest boon offered
to suffering humanity. It Is fast taking the
place of drugs In all nervous and rheumatic
troubles, and will effect cures in seemingly
hopeless cases whore every other known means
has failed. It is nature's remedy, and by its

RHEUMATISM
It is a well known fact that medical science
has utterly failed to afford relief in rheumatic
cases. We venture the assertion that although
Electricity has only been in use as a remedial
agent for a few years, it has cured more cases
of Rheumatism than all other means com-
bined. Some of our leading physicians, recog-
nizing this fact, are availing themselves of this
most potent of nature's forces.
TO RESTORE MANHOOD
Thousands of people suffer from a variety of
nervous diseases, such as Seminal Weakness,
Impotency, Lost Manhood, Weak Back, etc.,
that the old modes of treatment fail to cure
There is a kiss of nerve force or power that
cannot be restored by medical treatment, and
any doctor who would try to accomplish this
by any kind of drugs is practising a dangerous
form of charlatanism. Properly treated
THESE DISEASES CAN BE CURED
Electricity, as applied by the Owen Electric
Belt and Suspensory, will most assuredly do
so. It is the only known remedial agent that
will supply what Is lacking, namely, nerve
force sr power, impart tone and vigor to the
organs and arouse to healthy action the whole
nervous system.
BEWARE OF IMITATIONS
