ENGLAND'S BEST CUSTOMER, In his report to the Brantford board of trade, the body which he represented at the Imperial trade congress in London, Mr Erastns Wiman calls attention to the fact that trade between Great Britain and the North American continent would be in- creased instead of being reduced by un- restricted reciprocity between Canada and the United States. Mr Wiman points out that in the fourteen years ending in 1880, the increase in the trade between Great Britain and the United States was fifty millions of pounds sterling, while between Canada and, Great Britain, in the same time, it has only grown a paltry million and a half! Even proportionately to popula- tion the result is equally striking, for each loyal Canadian has increased hie business with the mother country in fourteegi years to the extent of only six shillings, while each commercial enemy in the United States has increased it sixteen shillings! If the same relative development should come to Canada in the next fourteen years, as will come to the United States within that period, by a close relation and parti- cipation in the growth of that wonderful conntry, Great Britain would share in that wonderful prosperity to a degreefar greater than she is likely to realize from existing condidtions, intensified as time goes on by the commercial -warfare thatetiats between the two countries, and the constant struggle againat nature and geography on the part of Canada. In view of the foregoing facts it is not surprising to find Englishmen laugh- ing at Sir Charles Tupper's proposal that the mother country shall destroy her trade with the United States and other foreign countries in the hope of extending her trade with Canada, ei Melly -Which -per- sists in excluding Britieh goods from her markets in order that local combinesters may charge their own prices for inferior goods. By a typhoon, landslide and earthquake in Japan 450 people were drowned, 3,000 houses swept away and 2,000 houses sub- ixterged; while 25,000 people are being fed by the Government, assieted by charitable people.
