MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKETS.
Trade was brisk, on Monday but pries
of cattle were scarcely so high as last Thurs-
day, although higher than they were a week
ago. The best beeves sold at about 4ic per
lb.; large fat cows at from 4 to 4ic; do half
fatted and rough stock, including some old
oxen, 3 to NO do, with a number of leanish
beasts at about 3c per lb. Export shippers
are stilTiosing niOneY;'tinit isunderstoodat
the present rate of loading in this extreme
heat. Although cattle are supposed to
stand a •little more than the human being,
they cannot stand being cooped up in a hot
pen for seven or eight days without succumb-
ing. During the past week but few ship-
ments have been made in this line, as for
present they will certainly be fewer. Ship-
pers of this meat thought they had a cinch
on the English market, and sent all they
could buy, but the experience they have got
tends to make them a little cautious, as no I
shipper, whether rich or poor,- -c-otild MAO -
the loss incurred lately on sheep exports.
Irish grass-fed cattle were very plentiful
on the English market, and brought good
prices on account of having no competition,
American cattle of the same grade being
scarce. Sales at Birkenhead were at the
standard weekly price, 6d, they having gone
up at the first part of the week and refmain-
ing stationary. Quotations from Liverpool
give 6d for best, and f rom London 60.
