WEER STORIES Or WAXY
MINERS:
A feW Of the MatiS' SitOrieS that are
told of Miner' Ittek will enable the
reader to understap.d how nnd why
the heads of whole eounnimilties maybe
turned in mining regions, Jim Whit*
latch, the discoyerer of the Whitlatch-
Union naine, pear Helena, led a typical
Western ,tniner's life, The mine in
question is now ownedln England, and
has produced $20,000,000 in gold. After
Jim Whitlatch had sold the property
for $1,600,000 he went to New York
"to make tts much money as Vander,
hilt." He was a rare treat to Wall
Street, which fattened on him, and in
one year let him go with only the
clothes on his back. He returned to
Montana, began "prospecting" again,
and discovered a mine for which be got
8250,000. He went to Chicago to rival
Mr Potter Palmer in wealth, and re-
turned just as he did from New York
—"flat -strapped," as he would have ex-
pressed it. He made still another for-
tune, and went to San Francisco, where
he died a poor man. Another Lewis
and Clarke County mine—the Drum
Lummon-provided another suchstory.
It was discovered by an Irish iutriti-
grant named Thomas ()ruse.Although
ne owned it, he could not get a sack of
flour on credit. He sold it to an Eng-
lish syndicate for $1,500,000. But he
remains ' one of the wealthy men of
Helena.
There is an ex -State Seaator in Bea-
ver Head County who owns a very rich
mine, the ore yielding 8700 to the net.
He is a California "Forty-niner," who
came as a, prospector to Montana, and
since discovering his trine has lived
upon it in a peculiar way. He has no
faith in banks. He says his money,, is
safest in the ground. When he has
spent what money he has, he takes
out a wagon -load of ore, ships it to
Omaha, sells it, and lives on the.return
until he needs another wagon -load.
Thete is a, queer story concerning
the Spotted Horse Mine, in Fergus Co.
It was found by P. A. McAdow, who
sold it to Governor Hauser and A. H.
Holder for $500,000 three years ago.
They paid a large sum down in cash,
and the other payments were to come
out of the ground. The ore was in
pockets, each of which was easily ex-
hausted. Whatever t was taken out
went to McAdow, who got about 5100,-
000. Then the purchasers abandoned
it, on the advice of experts, and,Mr Me-
Adow took hold of it. He found the
vein, over which rails had been laid for
a mining car. He has taken out 5500,-
000, and it is still a good mine. One
of these children of luck came to He-
lena with money, picked out a wife,
who was then a poor seamstress, hired
a hotel, and invited the town to the
wedding. The amount of champagne
that flowed at that wedding was fabu-
lous, and it is said that the:whole town
reeled to bed that night.—Harper's
Magazine for:June.

ONCE WEALTHY.

A third of a century ago Bob Grid-
ley, of Saratoga, was probably tho best
known and one of the richest gamblers
in -the United States. He conducted a
place for years before John Morrissey
came to the front. Bob was character-
ized as an "honest gambler," a scarce
article in the world of chance to -day,
ansLitswas a commor saying that "Bots.
Gridley's word is good. for $50,000;"
As the years thinned his locks and
bent his form his luck changed and
false friends assisted in :depleting his
exchequer. Step by step he decended
the financial ladder, and his continued
misfortune soured him to the pessimis-
tic extent that he believed everybody
was against him. Reverses drove him
out of gambling and the speculating
fraternity soh looked upon him as a
"has been,"
4 tWith the slitillemnant of his for-
tune he established trout ponds and
siarght to obtiiiin .stn' hnnest livelihood.
His wife died and his family became
scattered. Two or three years ago he
disposed of his ponds at a loss and
established new ones a little north of
the town. Adversity continued on
his trails' The second •investment cost
hirn $11,0'00 and his laSt penny. In • a
few days a mortgage foreclosure will
wipe even this out and leave „him com-
paratively penniless friendless, and
alsandon ed at the tottering age of eighty
yeata. The isr4ent -generation has
forgotten old. Bob Gridley. He
smokes his pipe in his wrinkled face,
he wonders how soon he will be com-
pelled to seek the refuge of the Sara-
toga county poorhouse. —Saratoga Cor.

ETERNAL VIGILANCE
'Is the price of health. But with all our
precaution there are enemies always lurk-
ing about our systems, only waiting a favor-
able opportunity to assert themselves. Im-
purities in the blood may be hidden for
years or even for generations and suddenly
break forth, undermining health and hast-
ening death. For all diseases arising from
impure blood Hood's Sarsaparilla is the
unequalled and unapproached remedy. It
is King of them all, for it conquers disease.
When Baby was sick, we gave her Castoria.
When he was a Child, she cried for Casteria.
When she became Miss, she clung to Castoria.

THE BEST.
If we had only the larger vision that
can see all around we would perceive
that everything which happens to us is
the best that can happen:- If it is some-
thing very bad, then we learn from it
to avoid the mistakes and pitfalls that
tumbled us into the ditch the other time
Many a time, looking back in after
years to an unfulfilled heart's desire of
long ago, we know beyond doubting
that it would have been our ruin if we
had obtained it. What we most wish
for is often the worst thing for us.
It is absolutely certain that in the
long run the good and ill of life are
evened up exactly. We always get
precisely what we earn, no more and
no less. If you stay poor it is because
you have not the executive ability to
get rich. It was Emerson who said
that the highest test of success was not
wealth gaining, however, but charac-
ter building. This lofty result every-
body can secure. When all seems to
have failed yon and the world appears
to be falling in fragraments around
your head, do no rave or whine or
despair. Gather up your pluck and
try again, serene in the sure knowledge
that the best will come to you at last.
It surely will. Whatever is best for us
fate sends to us. The failures we
make arise from the fact that we do not
know how to use the best when we get
it. Rub open your eyes, summon all
your courage and shrewdness and
look for the gold in the rock that has
just hurled you down. It is always
there, dead sure. Do your best; be
honest and kindly to all men. When
you get down and are inclined to des-
pair; recall this from John Burroughs:
Serene I fold my hands and wait,
Nor care for wind nor tide nor sea;
I rave no more 'gainst time nor fate,
For lo! my own will come to me.

Our girl was a beautiful baby, fair and plump

old, sores broke out behind her ears and
spread rapidly over her head and forehead
down to her eyes, and into her neck. We

with his terrible humor. Being urged to try
Hood's Sarsaparilla we did so. We soon
noticed that she had more life and appetite.
The medicine seemed to drive out more of
the humor for a short time. but it soon began to
subside, the itching and burning ceased,
and In a few months her head became entirely
clear of the sore. She is now perfectly well,
boa no evidence of the humor, and her skin is
