MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKETS.
There are no new features worthy of note
here in live stock, and shippers are quietly
awaiting the opening of navigation, but are
doing very little business. The local
market was dull and neglected as is
usually the case after the easter markets and
it is almost impossible to give, quotations
owing to the small offerings. We quote:
Good :butchers, 4 to So: medium, 3 to 4c:
culls, 2 to 3c; sheep, 4 to 41c; lambs, 4 to
50 : hogs, $5.50 to $5.60, and calves, $3 to
$8. The cattle market was almost deserted
to -day, as the butchers have enough of beef
on hand to last for a week, and they want
to rednce their stocks a good deal before
purchasing any more.
THE BRITISH CATTLE MARKET
Liverpool. April 18,—The market was
unchanged here to -day for States cattle,
maiden heifers and steers making about
50, sinking offals. The arrivals continue
very heavy, but the outlook for the Cana-
dian trade is much better.
TORONTO LIVE STOCK MARKETS
Aoont 22 loads, including one T'aitd which
came in yesterday, were , ,".6ed on the
market this morning. The briskness which
characterized trading in several leading
lines to -day was unexpected, the general
impression being_ that local butchers were
well -Fitoeleld-
for the Easter trade. There was a fair at-
tendance of buyers and with the light run
there was a fair prospect for seeing the
market well cleaned out before the close.
There was a fair demand from local butch-
ers, and with the comparatively small num-
ber of cattle offered most of the sale stook
had changed hands by noon. Prices were
about steady at last week's figures. A few
loads of extra choice butchers cattle sold at
4; good to choice do, 34 to 3i -c; fair to good
heifers and steers, 3 to 3fc, and inferiors
rough cattle, n to 30 per lb.
FIGURES ON BABIES.
---
A baby is born -at every- beat- of-the—hu-
man heart. This is more than one for
every tick of the clock. These "living
jewels" (as the poet calls babies) "dropped
unstained from heaven" take wings and fly
back whence they came one for every
minute of the day. From January 1 to
December 31 between 38,000,000 and 40,000-.
000 living jewels are dropped into this cold
world. There are more baby girls than
boy babies. The proportion of female
births to male births is as 100 to 90. So
that between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 more
girls are born in the world each year than
boys. There is always a surplus of women,
and the extra number of girl babies keeps
up the supply.
The rate of infant mortality is enor-
mous. In round numbers 5,000,000 babies
never live long enough to talk, 5,000,000
more never have a chance to walk or run,
and 5,000,000 never get old enough to go to
school. If you are good at figures get your
paper and pencil and try this sum. Here
is a simple problem in arithmetic: A
baby is barn to -day (1892). Now, suppose
its ancestors had married at the age of 21
from the time of our Lord—fifty-six gen-
erations, how many grandfathers has that
baby had? The answer, in round numbers,
will be three figures followed by fifteen
ciphers. Professor Proctor one time figur-
ed that if from a single pair each husband
and wife had married at the age of 21 for
5,000 years the population of the earth, if
there had been no deaths, would now be
2,199,915 followed by 144 ciphers.
Suppose that each baby born this year
weighed eight ponnds ; look at the combin-
ed weight I It would take half a dozen
cradles of the size, capacity and strength
of our new steel war cruisers to hold the
infants. When twins arrived in Artemns
Ward's family somebody called it an epi-
sode. "Yes," said Artemus, "two episodes
waying about eighteen pounds jintly." In
the foregoing baby figures we have allowed
for episodes.
