The "Myrtle Navy" plug correctly repre-
sents the, syliole plan upon which its mann-
lactate 'if canduoted. There is not a frac-
tional part of $ cent expended upon it for
mere appearance. It is neither wrapped in
tin foil nor worked into fancy shapes, nor
put in fancy cases, nor subject to any_kind
of expense merely to please the eye Okay-
tivate the fancy. 'Pie roanafacturers
rightly believed that tobacco was -not par -
chased for ornam.ent, but for emoking, and
therefore all extraneoas expense was avoid-
ed and added to the quality of the tobacco.
The public have testified in its ease that
they prefer paying their money for a high
quality of article than for ornament out of

them is recommended as a cum fox
boils, and they tend to make the com-
plexion clear, and the face free from
pimples. The children of those nation-
alities who eat of them most largely
noticeably escape that bane of child-
hood, worms. Their use is beneficial
to the digestive organs, they are excel-
lent in diseases of -the bladder and kid-
neys, are of benefit in liver complaints,
and their power for good in lung trou-
bles is well known. They are the best
cure for insomnia.
A favorite remedy for a cough is a
syrup made by alternating slices of raw
onion with sugar. Out a large onion,
horizontally, into thin slices, put one
in a dish, sprinkle augar over it, then
add another slice of onion, building it
up thus by layera until all are used.
Cover the dish. 4,bout once in three
hours a teaspoonful of syrup will have
formed, which should be taken at in-
tervals of about this length throughout
the day.
Hot poultices made of onions, and
mixed with goose oil, have been used
advantageously in maim. Roasted
onions are sometimes bound to the
feet and placed upon the cheats of little
ones suffering from the effects a a cold.
Placed raw upon a cloth, then beaten
to a pulp, bandaging with this the
throat and well up over the ears, they
have given relief in cases of diphtheria.

Hon Wilfrid Laurier was asked if he
would have any objection to saying if
there would be any change in the policy
of the Liberal party in view of what
took 'place. "Certainly not," replied
he. 'The Liberal party is to -day as
strongly wedded to reciprocity -that
is to better trade relations between the
UnitedStates and Canada -s ever, and
we are as confident of being able to
secure the same as ever we were in the
past." "But the statement by Hon Mr
Foster?" We have no "confidence in
Mr Foster as a diplomat -evidently he
had no confidence in himself -to do jus-
tice to Canada when he solicited the
aidof Mr.,Blaitte."
"Mr Blaine has yet to be heard from,"
said the Liberal, "and not till then will
we know exactly what took place. In
the meantime we cannot believe the
door is shut against us in securing bet-
ter trade relations with the United
States, despite all that has been said.',

WHAT A HORSE CAN DO
A horse will travel 400 yards in 4i
minutes at a walk, 400 yards in 2 min-
-utes at a trot, 400 yards in 1 minute at
a gallop. The usual work of a horse is
taken at 22,500 pounds / aised 1 foot per
minute for 8 hours per day. A horse
will carrry 250 pounds 25 miles per day
of 8 hours. An average draught horse
will draw 1,600 pounds 23 miles per day
on a level road, weight of waggon in-
cluded. The average weight ot a horse
is 1,000 pounds, his strength is equiva-
lent to 5 men. In a horse mill moving
at 3 feet per second, track 25 feet, di-
ameter, he exerts with the machine the
power of 4a horses. The greatest
amount a horse can pull in a horizontal
line is 900 pounds, • but he can only do
this momentarily; in continued exer-
tion probably half of this is the limit.
He attains his growth in 5 years, will
live 25 days on water witbout solid
food, 17 days without eating or drink-
ing, but only 5 days on solid food with-
out drinking. He will live 25 years,
average age 16 years.

Fair Play only Wanted.
.Al the banquet of the Toronto
Young. Conservatives Monday night,
Him. J. C. Patterson said:
Ile viiould wish the yonng /nen in
carrying on their political warfare to
be generous to their opponents, espec-
ially when those opponents were van-
quished in the held. They should
always remember that their opponents
were their fellow countrymen. They
should remember that the Liberal
party in Canada had just as loyal and
faithful Canadians in its ranks as had
the Conservative party. They should
not be carried away by the small-souled
idea that in the Conservative ranks
alone were all the true hearts and all
the talent in the Dominion. If their
opponents had been misled it was to
be hoped that they would see the error
of their ways and retrace their steps.
With Emerson, they should always
judge a tnan when he was at his best.
Commenting on this, the Hamilton
Times says:—Liberals do not ask for
Conservative generosity; they Would
be satisfied with justice. They believe
that, in a fair fight, with ungerryman-
dered constituencies, with honest
voter's lists, with decent returning
officers and deputies, and with no
boodle on either side, they could whip
the Conservatives in a general election:
and if they were defeated under such
circumstances they would make no
complaint, but would go to work hope-
fully to educate the people up to a due
appreciation of the benefits of free trade.
They have a right to feel sore when a
County with an aggregate Liberal
majority of 1,000 is cut up so as to re-
turn two Conservatives and one Liber-
al. They are bitterly conscious of the
injustice which puts men like Baird
and Carling into the House of Coni -
mons, in spite of the fact that their
Liberal opponents received the major-
ity of votes in Queen's and in London.
They don't like to be bought, out by
Birmingham's band, nor by the whole-
sale bribery of promises of public
works. They cannot "stomach' Con-
servative boasting about the pupular-
ity of the N. P., when they know that
but for the scoundrelly arrangements
made by the Conservative party to
enable the minority to rule and plun-
der the majority the N. P. would have
been repealed long ago. Keep your
generosity, Mr Patterson, until it is
called for. Undo the gerrymander
and the franchise act, and the Liberals
of Canada will 'see that you and your
colleagues get justice at the next ap-
peal to the people.

A curious custom of the Greek
Church was illustrated at the funeral
the other day of the young Grand
Duchess Paul of Russia. Before the
coffin was closed the metropolitan
placed a written paper in the right
hand of the corpse, which read : "We,
by the grace of God, Prelate of the
Holy Russian Church, write this to
our master and friend, St. Peter, the
gatekeeper of the Lord Almighty. We
announce to you that the servant of
the Lord, her imperial highness the
Grand Duchess Paul, has finished her
life on earth and we order you to ad-
mit her into Heaven without delay,
for we have absolved all her sins and
granted her salvation. You will obey
our order on sight of this document
which we put into her hand."
