AN OLD /IAN'S LIFE GOES OUT AS HE
SINGS "NEARER TO THEE."
One who looked the crowd over as we
waited for the train would not have set
us down as hard hearted and indiffer-
ent ; but so we proved to be,as a young
girl not over thirteen years of age,
leading an old man who was stone
blind and very feeble, passed slowly
around the room soliciting alms. They
got a penny here and there, but even
those coins seemed to be given grudg-
ingly, and those who gave nothing con-
soled themselves with the reflection
that the pair were frauds and really
needed no financial assistance.
When they had made the tour of the
room the girl lead the old man to a seat
in the corner, and after a few words had
passed between them they began sing-
ing a hymn. She had a wonderful
voisefor a child, clear and sweet, and
his was a deep bass. The hymn was
that entitled"Nearer, My God to Thee."
You have heard it by a full choir, ac-
companied by the strains of a grand
organ, but you never listened so intent-
ly as we did. there. There was a plaint
in that girl's voice which touched a
chord, and there was a quaver in the
old Man's bass which saddened you.
They sang low and soft, and they had
not, finished a verse when half of us
were standing up to see them better.
The girl kept her eyes on the floor.at
her feet. 'The sightless eyes of the old
man—her father—were raised to the

Nearer to Thee.
The hymn was not finished when
every ine,n began feeling for a contri-
bution and women opened their porte-
mon naies. It was different now. They
were no longer frauds and everyone
was glad to give something. Two or
three were ready to move about to
take up a collection, but they waited
for the end of the hymn. When it
came to the chorus of the last verse the
old man was singing bravely. Half
way through his voice suddenly choked
and the last two lines were sung by the
girl alone and died away in a sob and a
cry. All of us saw the old man's head
drop forward and his body lurch. He
would have fallen to the floor had not
the girl seized and held him up. A do-
zen of us were there in a moment, but
we were too late. The old man's life
had gone out as you breathe upon the
flame of a candle, and on his ashen lips
still trembled the sacred notes cof the
refrain : "Nearer to Thee 1"

THE SPIRIT OF COURTESY.
Good manners is the art of Making
those people easy with whom we con-
verse.
Never does a man protray his own
character more vividly than in his
manner of protraying another.
Gentleman is a term which does not
apply to any station, but to the mind
and the feelings in every station.
A really great man is known by three
signs—generosity in the design, hu-
manity in the execution and modera-
tion in success.
True sympathy is putting ourselves
in another's place ; and we are moved
irr proportion to the reality of our
imagination.
Nothing sharpens the arrow of Sar-
casm so keenly as the courtesy that
polishes it ; no reproach is like that we
clothe with a smile and prevent with a
bow.

A Fact
WORTH knowing is that blood disi

to cure, yield to Ayer's Sarsaparilla:
Fresh confirma-

suoh deep-seated
and stubborn com-

like, are thorough-

the use of this won-

Mrs. R. Irving
Dodge, 110 West
125th street, New
York, certifiea "About two years ago, after suffering
for nearly two years from rheumatic
gout, being able to walk only with. great
discomfort, and having tried various
remedies, including mineral waters,
without relief, I saw by an advertise-
ment In a Chicago paper that a man had
been relieved of this distressing com-
plaint, after long suffering, by taking
Ayer's Sarsaparilla. I then decided to
make a trial of this medicine, and took
it regularly for eight months. I ,..am
pleased to say that it effected a com-
plete cure, and that I have since had no
return of the disease."
Mrs. L. A. Stark, Nashua, N. H.,
writes: "One year ago I was taken 91
with rheumatism, being confined to my
house six months. I came out of the
sickness very much debilitated, a 1th 110

every way. I commenced to use Ayer's
Sarsaparilla and began to improve at
once, gaining in strength and soon re
covering my usual health. I cannot say
too much in -navies of this well-known
medicine."
"I have taken a great deal of medi-

much good as Ayer's Sarsaparilla. I
felt its beneficial effects before I had

A TALE OF CRUELTY.
A story of brutality and inhuman:treat-
ment of a little child reached Coroner Tuck-
er, Buffalo. It beats in common inhuman-
ity, any of the practices of the celebrated
Lady Montagu, of County Derry feriae.
Some months ago a family named Cavan,
or Carver, came to the village of Spring -
brook, from Canada, and went on a farm,
which they worked on shares. Last week
the three or four-year-old child of the
Cavans took to his bed with a sore throat,
which rapidly became worse. No physician
was summoned, but instead a looal mid-
wife was called. She diagnosed the case
as contagious diptheria, attended it three
days and then gave up. Then she ordered
her patient seoluded in a room without a
fire, as she said, it is reported, it would die
easily and the end would come quicker.
accordingly, the child was put in a room
where there was no fire, and the midwife
ordered them to open all the windows and
doors, so the little one could have the fall
benefit of the freezing atmosphere, while
she and the heartless and. ignorant father
and mother sat in another apartment hug-
ging the stove and listening to the plain-
tive cries of the child, who, displayiag sur-
prising vitality, lingered until last Monday
night.
