„ ;VOLTAIRE . Ammo:ism
Boanewhat similar story is told of
La Ifotte, a /Frenchman, to whom Vol• -
taire read a tragedy, in five acts.
"Your tragedy is excellent," said La
• Motte, "except that you have allowed
yourself to borrow from the second.
scene in the fourth act, and, to prove
• it. I shall recite this same acme, which
• pleasedme so, much when I first heard
it that I committed it to memory."
And thereupon he repeated, word for
word. the whole scene.
Voltaire and the company present
were astonished, after La Motte had
enjoyed himself awhile atitheir expense
he said:
• "Make yourself easy, sir ; the scene
is your own. But while)youwere read-
ing it, it struck me as so beautiful that
could not resist the pleasure of com
flatting it to memory."
Cardinal Mezzofrnti used his wonder-
ful .memory in mastering languages,
and was so successful that he could
• speak fifty-two, with hardly any trace
olforei gn accent.
Professor Porsen,of Oxford,the great
Greek ' 'scholar, had an astonishing
memory, even in his youth. When he
was a boy at school another boy bor-
rowed his copy of Horace, and, when
about to return it, he dexterously sub-
stituted an Ovid in its stead. When
the master called upon young Porson
to read and construct from Horace, he
walked up to the desk and began to
rattle off the text and translation until
the master, stopping him, said:
"Why, Porson, you seem to be read-
ing from one side of the page and I
from the other. Let me see your
• b6ok."
To his astonishment he found it was
Ovid. Not in the least disconcerted,
Porson went on to the end.
• t another time, upon a visit to a
gen aan's house, he treated the
guests to a translation, without book,
of an Italian tale he had just read, and

them.
A WHOLE NEWSPAPER COMMITTED.
George Frederick Cooke, theltrage-
• dian, committed to memory. the whole
• contents of a newspaper in eight hours.
But his feat was eclipsed by that of a
man who Waited on a Dutch minister
of state to display his memory. As a
proof he, took up a newspaper which
happened to be lying on the table, and,
after reading it through, repeated its
entire contents.
If the persons peesent were astonish-
ed at this remarkable feat, what was
their amazement when he repeated the
whole thing backward!
The Emperor Claudius is said to have
retained in his memory all of Homer,
Sallust, Demosthenes and Aristotle's
metaphysics. Tully and Seneca never
• forget anything, Cyrus is said to have
known all the names of all his soldiers;
and Mithridates, who ruled over twen-
ty-two kingdoms and tribes, could ad-
dress them all in their own _language
without an interpreter.
Coming down to more recent times,
Joseph Scaliger said he learned Hornet
in ten daya paid all, the Greek poets in
friur m6nths ; and Lord Grenville knew
the Greek Testament'from the begin-
ning of Mathew to the end. of Revela-
tion.
Lord Maculay is said to have had a
prodigious memory, and certainly any
one who reads his "History of Eng-
land" will be convinced of that fact;
for such a wealth of illustration, drawn
- from the most diversified and abun-
dant stores of informatien concerning,
both ancient and modern , times, has
never been surpassed, and could have
been commanded onlar by the most
wonderfully -capacious memory.
,At the present day 'we have Mr
Blaine, the Secretary of State, who has
the reputation of never forgetting the
man or the name of the man once in-
troduced to him ; and many of our liv-
ing statesman have cul tivated this fac-
ulty in a similar way.
Some years ago there was a post-
master at Albany, fie. Y., who new the
names and residences of 36,000 persons
living in that city.
One of the most cuirous instances of
memory was possessed by a servant at
Delmonico's restaurant:in New York
city. This man would take 100 or 200
hats"from different men in the course
cf an evening, and upon their corning
out of the dining 'room would hand
each his own hat. He was never
known to make a mistake.

By looking at the quotations of the Vir-
'ilia tobacco markets it will be found that
the highest price paid for "fillers"—which
the tobacco which forms the body of the
Plug—very closely corresponds with the in.
voiced price of tobacco leaf 'imported into
Oritario. As over four-fifths of all the leaf
imported into the Province is for "Myrtle
Navy" stock, this fact is official proof of
the claim that the "Myrtle Avg" is made
'of the finest Virginia leaf.

THE ATHEIST.
The fool bath said, "There is no God."
No God I Who lights the morning sun,
And sends him on his heavenly road,
A farAnd brilliant Course to run?
Who, when the radiant day is done,
Hangs forth the moon's nocturnal lamp,
And bids the planets one by one
Steal o'er the night -vales, dark wad
damp?
No God?—Who gives the evening dew,
The fanning breeze, the fostaringishower?
Who warms the spring morn's budding
bougb,
And paints thessumnaer's noontideflower?
Who spreads in the autumnal bower
The fruit -trees' mellow stores around:
And sends the winter's ioy power
To invigorate the exhausted ground?
No God!—Who warms the heart to heave
With thousand feelings soft and sweet,
And prompts the aspiring soul to leave
The earth we tread beneath our feet,
And soar away on pinions fleet,
Beyond the scenes of mortal strife,
With fair ethereal forms to meet,
That tell us of an after life?
No God!—Who fixed the solid ground
On pillars strong, that alter not?
Who spread the curtained skies around,
Who doth the ocean bounds allot?
Who all things to perfection brought,
On earth below, in heayen above?
Go, ask the fool of impious thought,
That dares to say, "There is no God 1"

THE LESSON FROM LINCOLN.
Lincoln county, the home of thousands
of descendents of U. E. Loyalists, the cen-
ter of the great fruit growing region, favors
trade freedom and that by a decided ma-
jority of the intelligent electorate.
The political transitions which the county
has gone through are remarkable.
At Confederation, the Conservative can-
didate was elected by acclamation.
Two years afterwards, a Conservative
was elected by 600 majority.
Three years later, the Conservative
nominee had 543 majority.
In 1874, a Liberal won by a small ma-
jority, but was unseated and re.eleoted in a
bye -election.
In 1878 Bykert carried the constituency
by 96.
Then came the gerrymander to offset
growing Liberal strength.
Rykert carried the constituency etraight
along by virtue of this deal, and in 1887 had
a majority of 495.
In 1891 Mr Gibson captured the county
on the great trade imam, his majority being
48.
On Thursday he was re-elected by a ma-
jority of 288.
If persistently advocated, even a gerry-
mander cannot prevent the triumph of a
great principle, the carrying out of which
would benefit the people.

About thefirst ofNovember the weather
in Russia will be as mild as it is here in
September, Not a sign can be seen of an
approaching change, when suddenly, with-
out any apparent warning, a light baze
will be seen in the northern sky, and in
twenty-four hours the thermometer my
fall 50 degrees. The changeis so sudden
and violent that travelers are frequently
frozen to death before they can gain shelter.
It has ocourred that farmers out looking
after their flocks haVe been ()might in one
of these blizzardes and missing their way
home have lost their lives, their bodies
remaining under the snow until the fol-
lowing apring. The suddenness of a Dakote
blizzard is well known in the northwestern
part of our country, but it is tardiness per-
sonified when compared with the rapidity
with which a Russian winter storm comes.

It was in the old Catholic Church i

little old Irishman, who was in the en

hard to get and who was the lessee o

ed. He walked impressively down th
centre aisle, as becomes a man of ind
pendentrneans. Several strange ladle
were occupying his pew. There wa
roorn for him, but, that wasn't enough
He placed one hand on the back of th
front pew and with the wave of th
other said in a voice loud enough to b
heard all over the church:
"Come out ov that now."
Very much surprised and confused
the ladies obeyed, and they were tree
ed to another sensation by the lesse
saying:
"Now in wid yez again and mak
yerselves ter hnm. Oi only wanted ye
ter know as who owned the pew."
He was as polite as they make them,
and he accompanied his command with
such a sweeping gesture and winning
smile that the ladies complied and the
interrupted priest resumed.
