The marriage was performed by the Rev. Father Gook. Mr Rd Harvey, Thames Road, Us - borne, has purchased the 150 acre farm of the late Jas Jory; situated about one mile west of Idspresent home. Last fall Miss CarPrieJohnson,of Var- na, put a note in a barrel of apples re- questing the receiver of the, apples to state thecondition of the fruit on reach- ing its destination, also the price paid. Mr Tarte will bring seriousaccusations aeitinst Sir Adolphe Caron and Mr Davinlvall en- deavor to prove that Mr Dewdney, the Minister of the Interior, made a lot of swag out of the selection of the Regina town site. Nothing seems more probable than that in a few years all the horse cars in cities will be replaoed by Electric cars. Horses will be doneaway with, adding incalculably to the cleanliness and convenience of the streets. But the horse trade willnot suffer on that account. As many will be needed as ever. Americans are becoming rich rapidly, and there is increasing demand for fine carriage and saddle horses. Cardinal Lavigerie,Archbishopof Algiers, has written a letter in which he announces his adhesion to the joint statement just issued by the Archbishops of Paris,Toulouse, Rheims, Lyons and St. Maio, complaining that the country has become atheistic. The statement of the Archbishops has caused a stir in the religious ciroles of Franca. Aphn R. Calvert, for over forty years a well-known resident of the Lond3n Road, Sarnia :township, died last Friday in the 89th year of his age. On Sunday, the 24th, his wife followed him, both dying at the residence of their son-in-law, Joseph S. Wood, whither they had been moved a short time ago for better attendance. Mrs Cal- vert was in her 85th year. The funeral took place Wednesday, and was very large- ly attended; both being buried in the same grave. A sensational affair occurred at Alber- ton on Monday. F. J Boyd, a wealthy resident, was gored by a bull some weeks ago, and from the effects he died. Mr Boyd's son John, who since 1888 has been in Manitoba' came to attend the funeral, and was metwith a captias order for his arrest. The order was secured at the in- stance of Alberta Jane Vansicle, who has entered an action against John Boyd for breach of promise and seduction in 1888. .She asked for $2,000, and her father for a like amount. Boyd is a descendant of Sir Francis Boyd. His father left a fortune of sheet $50,000. Advices from Boma, in the Congo Free State, bring news that the American mis- sion, established on the Congo River in the neighborhood of the Pallaballa Station, has been made the scene of a terrible tragedy, in which five American mis- sionaries, three men and two women, and seven native converts and servants lost their lives at the hands of murderers. All of the buildings, schools, residences and granaries were burned and the cultivated fields laid waste. No evidence has been discovered which would conclusively show wilt, the perpetrators were, but suspicion points to a number of half -civilized Portu- guese natives. 0. C. RICHARDS dz CO. A petition is in circulation among the farmers of western New York, praying for a reduction in the duty on Canadian barley from 30 to 10 cents a bushel. Mr Sparling, M.A.,Principal of the Strathroy High School, died a few days ago, and now his successor; Mr D. L. Leitch, has been cut of by la, grippe. The trial of Salton Hall, who is said to have killed 99 men, commenced at Gladeville, Va., Tuesday. It looks as if tbsy might dispense with the trial in this case. A very strange monstrosity was born on a farm near St Jacobs, a few dans ago. It is a calf with eight legs, four ears and when grown will have four horns. The animal is alive and is in a healthy condition. Dr Sniee, the medical adviser of an insurance company in London, Eng., says the epidemic ,of grippe now pre- vailing has caused twice as many deaths as the cholera in 1842. The official estimates ot the Commis- sioner of Agriculture give these figures on the total wheat crop of North Da- kota for 1861: -Total average for the State, 2,865,502 acres; average yield for State, 22.58 bushels per acre; total number of bushels raised, 64,713,328. The Department of Agriculture has received a box of butter from Australia, having been ordered by the depart- ment with a view of showing the Ca- nadian farfners the kind of article they have to coMpete against in the English market, and the mode of packing. The butter arrived in excellent condition. It was packed in a box, and weighed 56 pounds. ss.'4"1.:ssiLLX-7.;', Particulars in the -case of the sudden deatn of Mrs John 1Veeks, wife of a colored laborer, of North Chatham, showed that the woman literally died of a broken heart, the result of heavy and continuous work. For several months Mrs Weeks had been complain- ing of a pain and uneasiness in the left breast. She was a very hardworking woman, laboring faithfully and stead- ily at her household duties ahd other tasks which she undertook apart from the home cares. It seemed to her that if she could only get a rest from the daily drudgery for a period she would get well. But her work was never- ending, and so the poor soul toiled on to the very last. PHILOSOPHICAL AND PHYSICAL. The only way to conquer a east iron destiny is to • yield to it. You will break to pieces if you are always cast- ing yourself upon rocks. Sitdown on the "sorrowing " >vine" now and then, but don't expea L.3 last long if you are constantly flinging yourself head first against it. If life holds nothing finer and sweeter than the routine of uncogenial work, if all the pleasant anticipations and lively hopes of youth remain but as cotton fabrics do when the colors have washed away, if good intention and noble purpose glimmer only a little now and then from out the murky en- vironments of your lot, as fisher lights at sea, accept the inevitable and make the best of it. Nothing can stop us if we are bound to grow. We are not like trees that can be hewn down by every chance woodman's axe; death is the only woodman abroad for us, and he does not hew down, he simply trans- plants. God is our only judge; to him alone shall we yield the record of life's trou- bled day, and isn't it a great comfort to think that he so fully understands what have been our limitations, and how we have been handicapped and baffled and hindered? If jockeys were to enter their horses for the great Derby with the understanding that the road was rough and the horses blind do you think much would be ex- pected of the finish? And is heaven less discriminating than a horse jockey? TWO MILES A MINUTE DOWN A FLUME Benjamin Edwarde;of Nevada, is in Den- ver. He was sitting in a lobby of the Windsor discussing the early days of that State, when the subject changed to fast riding. "You can talk as you like about the Vanderbilt specials and other trains that make phenomenal time," said he, "but if you never rode down a lumber flume in Nevada you don't know what it feels like to cleave through space like a meteor. Why tip in the Sierra Nevada range there are flumes five to ferty miles long, built on a 'regular engineer's grade, with a sixteen foot drop to the thousand. They are built of heavy planks shaped like a V, and carry eight inches of water in the aoute angle and discharge it at the rate of 400 miners' inches per minute. I was up at Lake Tahoe one day, which is six- teen miles from Carson, and after we got through our bussiness Ed. Patton, the I superintendent, said we'd better take a fly- ing trip back to town. He ordered out what he called a 'yacht,' which proved to be a V shaped canoe fourteen feet long. It had a brake which controlled two rub- ber pads on each side, so applied as to lift the yacht and let the water run under- neath if necessary. "Button rip your coats, tie on your hats and don't get soar- ed, boys, said Patton, as we climbed into the ma0hine.4 Then he told his men to turn on three inches more of water. Holy Scott but how that canoe did jump. Down we went through that threadlike flume and the trees looked like spectres. My teeth tried to chatter and couldn't make it, and as I occasionally opened my eyea and caught a glimpse of the landsocTe it appeared to be only a blur on my vision. We shot around curves with a velocity that was fearful to contemplate, and final- ly Ed. weighed anchor at Carson, just eight minutes from the time of starting." It lo a pleasure+ for me to say good words in favor of Anti -Dandruff, as its meriss cannot be questioned. D In my own case, andruff not only made itself known by appearance in more than liberal quantities front which I could not obtain relief, but Its continued presence anti increasing formation caused falling of the hair. My barber spoke highly of Anti -Dan- druff. I used It, and not only has every trace of Dandruff disappeared but the falling of the hair has stopped. Having full faith le the pteparation I not only endorse it for the ahoy( but further add that i as is fine dressing for the hair nothing equals it• . L.
