Slime on Christmas a day. Miss Cook returned home on Xmas day from a lengthy visit to Chicago. Mr. Howard of St. John, New Brunswick, was a Christmas guest of his brother Rev. Rogers Howard. Rev. W. A. Young attended a Synod meeting in the Forest City the past week. Christmas week was ouch a soft one, that Harrisons skating rink was not open. Mr. Allan Seager of Woodstock College spent Christmas at the family residence. .A large • number of townspeople attended the tea -meeting at Car low last week. Mrs. M. C. Cameron loft last week for the neighborhood of Los. .Angelos for the winter. Rev.•Father Dixon preached at Vespers in St. Peters on Christmas night. Mrs. Wm. Swafiield of Clinton was visiting relatives in town and neighborhood the past week. There was Celebration of Holy Communion at St. Georges at 9 a.m., and at the conclusion of the 11 o'clock service, on Christmas day. ;41re. Saults who was so seriously ill the past two weeks as to almost banish the hope of recovery, is now apparently steadily improving. Mr.- Geo. Saults of gt. Paul Minn., was home tho past week hav• been called hither by the serious Blum of his mother. The show meat and poultry on Xmas eve was magnificent, our butchers evidently not being afraid of the continued rnild weather. 'Sarah Lord Bailey assisted by Fred Warrington gave an entertain- ment in the Grand on Xmas night. The Iady is a splendid elocu- tionist. Miss Bertha Rusk who was teach ing in Mildmay the present year spent the holidays in Goderich. Miss Rusk has been engaged for 1$92 at an increased salary. Last evening the pupils of St. t4eorree Sunday School were en- tortained in the'Sohool room. A tea, followed by an entertaining program, and a Christmas tree con- stituted the bill of fare, Miss Florence Williams who re- cently'returned from the school of Pedagogy* Toronto, has obtained a first olasa prcfessional certificate. A SURPRISE PARTY.—On Monday evening Dec. 21st about forty of the members and friends of the St. James Church, Middleton, together with thoir pastor, Rev. Mr. Louis Diehl, assembled at tho residence of Mr. John Cluff to pass a social evening together and to present to him, their worthy superintendent of the Sunday School, a most hand• some present consisting of a beauti- ful Writing Desk and a volume of "The Life of Christ," by Canon Farrar, accompanied by the follow- ing address read by Mr. Charles' G. S. take this oppor- tunity of gathering together to ten- der to you our most heart -felt thanks and appreciation of your work as Supt. of our S. S. Several years have already rolled away since you first took the position but during that time your zeal and faith in S. S. work wavered not, even when things ,looked discouraging you were most untiring in .your. arduous. task. If there were children in the vicinity who did not attend any S. S. you were always on band to invite them to our S S. that they might be taught the most precious truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, thus fulfilling the divine command, "Go out into the highways and hedges, &c. Mr. John Bulger returned from Manitoba on Christmas day; he likes the country firstrate. Dr. Young is laid up with a se- vere attack of La Grippe ; we hope to see hint around again soon. Mr. Geo. Snell, our blacksmith, is doing a good trade this winter. George is hard to boat and we ads vise any one wanting anything in his line to give him a cal!. The Christmas tree in the Mee thodist church on Christmas night was a great success, the proceeds amounted to over $30 and will be used for Sunday school purposes. There were two weddings last week one at the residence of Mr. Thos. Robertson whose daughter was married to Mr. Isaac Edmeston the other at Mr. John Lee's Sr. whose daughter Edna was married to Mr. Thos. Miller. ExAnrINATION.—Our school ex- amination took place on the 22nd lust and was the best one ever )field in the section. Mr. Plummer and Mr. Lowery examined the scholars and gave them great credit for the manner in which they acquitted themselves. Xmas eve while waiting for Her Majesty's mail the boys of our beautiful village began to play Isaac on the street having imbibed too freely of the juice of the corn stock. They then invaded the postoffice where a large amount of gum juice was shot off in a cloud that rattled the people for 20 rode. After be- ing ejected from the postoffice, not satisfied with the exhibition they had made of themselves, they pro- ceeded to treat the town to a whole- sale serenade. Much sympathy is felt by every one for the sutforor, especially by the little folks, as he was ever ready with lots of fun and jokes with them. To show their appreciation of him the boys turned out and split up all his wood for him. We are glad to report, notwithstanding his intense suffering, that under tho careful treatment of his physician his hand is healing nicely. Municipal nominations took place in Industry hall ote Monday, C. Hamilton was re-elected Reeve by acclamation. There were nom- inated for councillors Jas. McGee, S. Gidley, A. McNally, Robt. Symonds, F. Metcalf, N. H. Young and Richd Irwin. After the close of nominations chairman E. D. 'Chamberlain announced that it was in order for the retiring ones to give an account of their stewardship during the past year, which they did to the beat of their ability. After which ex -Reeve Kelly criticis- ed the expenditure as given in the published financial statement, which th'e did not appear to approve of. Mr. Joseph Carter expressed his `dissatisfaction with work done on rho streets claiming that some of it was just, so much money thrown away . After a few remarks from Reeve Hamilton and others the meeting closed quietly. If all the candidates stick out until Monday next we expect lots of fun. Mullett. The Christmas Tree and entertain- ment which was held in tho Foresters hall on Christmas eve was a grand success. Though the roads were anything but favorable the hall was filled to overflowing. Iloare, manufacturer of dulcimers, harps and other musical instruments, passed through here on Monday with a load of his fine 'toned goods. James A. Ford was in the village this week and We wore sorry to seo him carrying his arm in a sling the result of his falling and getting his hand caught in a hook in his own shop. There is to bo an entertainment, gotten 'up by L. O. L 189, Holmes- ville, the latter part of January,. when it is expected that Rev. Wm. McDonough and a number of other prominent men will take part. The nominations were held in the town hall on Monday P. M. there was some lively speaking but all seemed to pasa off favorably, perhaps more so than some will think on next Monday.
