Fourteen -year-old Blanche Burrett, a pro- fessional model, was missed from her mother's home, at Wandsworth, near Lon- don, some weeks ago. In notifying the police Mrs. Barrett said that her daughter, at the age of three years, had been found by Sir John Militia playing in Wands- worth Common, and that he had copied her quaint and pretty fact in his famous Graphic print "Cherry Ripe." Blanche was subsequently found at Ful- ham, a London suburb, where she had beeu serving as an artist's model. The priub itt question was issued with the Christmas Graphic in 1380. 1113 TLU'E CHERRY In an article, "The Making of the Graphic,” in the U.:tiverted Review of Sep- tember, 1838, W. L. Marechale Booth-Clibborn Writes of Her Life Work. La Marechale Booth-Clibborn, the leader of the Salvation Army movement in France and Switzerland for the past ten years, bas just landed in this country, and will make a grand tour, telling of the good work of salvation. The lady is about thirty-two years of age. She is the eldest daughter of Com- mander -in -Chief Booth, of London. When the army made its first move to- wards the salvation of countries apart froth England, Mrs. Booth-Clibborn was selected to lead in Francs and the cantons of Swit- zerland. Her forthcoming book is one of the groat - est tributes to the work of the Salvationists the army has ever known. It is to bo pub- lished at No. 3 Rue Auber, Paris. LA MARECIIALI. BOOTH-CLIBBOIM. "The now tricolor," says Mrs. Booth- Clibborn, "was first raised by the weak hand of a woman in March, 1881, in a little hall in a courtyard up an impasse in the rowdy QuarLier du Temple in l'aris, at the foot of Belleville. To -day there are 216 stations and outposts of the Army dotted over twenty-three of the Departments of Franco and ten of the Swiss Cantons, and 430 French and Swiss officers "raised on the soil" are hard at work every day and every eight in the week for the salvation of their countrymen, aided by 300 local officers (also converts of the work). More than thirty other converts are working as evangelists, pastors or colporteurs in con- nection with the ehnrehes." "The gloomy prophesryings," says the au- thor, "that met Catherine Booth when she came to Franco, the astlurances that it. would he impossible to raise a solid, steady fighting force out of the volatile French, that it would be impossible to bring gay Frenchwomen Ito be Miriama or Deborahs, have all been swept away." HOW MARG'I=„ pliD.. A Horp, ely Story From the Aptly L• lfo'of a IIolueiy 'oople.. The Illinois Central train was half a hun- dred miles out of Chicago, headed for the city, and at a little station an old farmer game aboard. Ile was a little, weazoned mum, with a sensitive mouth half concealed by art iron -gray beard. Ilia ill-fitting clothe* were evidentlyleis most uucontfort-" able best, and he moved awkwardly and stiffly in thein. There were no vacant eeats, and atter some hesitation.. he slid softly into one occupied by a grave stranger, intent upon his paper: The old man was ill at ease, and as he turned his careworn, haggard face toward the brown, flying laudttseape it showed marks of some recent trouble, The stranger laid aside his paper after awhile and half -wistfully the old man glanced at hint. He spoke at last, with a strange huskiness: "I'm goiu' to the city for the second time in my life," Ile said, half startled at his own voice. "Yea?" and in the intonation of the other's there was au invitation to go ou. "The second tithe," replied the old man; t'thirty years ago, collie June, I went there for a w•odtlin' suit, and I'm a -coin' back there to -day for ,s coffin tool a shroud fer- tile little woman that -married rue. ' Hie voice broke, and, turning again to the window, he looked out %purl the dull, cold landscape and was silent ntany min- utes. . She's earn- ed it, God knows: and she's Darned some - thin' else -she's Darned that white raiment that the good book says is 'washed in the blood of the Lamb." The old man's voice sunk into that reverent whisper so common to the God-fearing of his class at the utter- ance of holy things, and in the silence which followed he sunk into a rev- orie. Ho was awakened from it only by the stopping of the train at Van Buren street. At the door of the car he shook hands with his companion, and a moment later was swallowed up in the crowd.. 11 was pitltul-all of it. And yet there was a passenger on that train who is the better man for the recollection of the old farmer's look and gesture, and for the thought that there are silver handles to the coffin that holds his sacred dust, lying out under a dark mound amid the barren brown of an Illinois prairie. -Chicago- Mail. Right -Hon. A. J. Balfour, M, P. - The December Review of Reviews re- gards his inborn aristocracy as Me. Bal - four's great strength, He is an aristocrat, but he is not one of Lord Beaconsfield's aristocrats who read nothing. He is, on the contrary, a great but desultory reader. He is the mint of letters of his party. He has an excellent literary taste, and would much prefer discussing books with Mr. Morley or Mr. Gladstone over a dinner table to debating politics with them in the House of Commons Mr Bal- four is more sworn at and sworn by than any mart in politics, save Mr. Gladstone. In some quarters it is regarded as the un- pardonable sin to suggest that ltlr. Balfour possesses a single virtue, or is not laden down with every vice. In others he is landed to the shies as if he were a hero and a demigod. \\'e never hear the last of his courage, his chivalry, his even-handed justice, his pluck. All this is very exaggerated. Idr. Balfour is neither fiend nor archangel. Ile is a clever young aristocrat, early trained to the ser- vice of the State, who has made the most of a capital chance. He has a considerable literary gift, great personal and social charm, and a good Scotch habit of appli- cation and persist- ; ence. In the sub- stance of his character there is true grit, and A..0. BALFOUR. in a tough fight any ono who found himself in a tight place would have good reason to thank his stars if he had Mr. Balfour at his back. He is perfectly sincere, and he is as free from self-seeking as most men. If only he had more popular sympathy and a little more Engliah faith he might be one of the moat powerful Ministers of modern times. Star Dust. Uranus is behind the sun.
