A hint to actresses and other ladies who insist upon wearing diamond ornanhente in public. Longitude null Marriage. I take the opportunity of ,calling atten- tion of some of the legal luminaries to a question which sundry of the gens togata to whom I have proposed it have admitted to bo knotty. A. B. goes from London to Naples, leaving his wife resident in the former city. But he, unforttsnately falls in love with a young lady in Naples; and being a wicked man, with no fear of God, and little fear of the law before his oyes. he determines 'to deceive her by a bigamour and invalid marriage. He is, accordingly, married, to all appearance legally, on board an English man•of-war in the bay, in the presence of the Captain, at 11 o'clock on the morning of Feb. 10—the titian being un- questionably ascertained. But the wife left in J,ondon died on that same Feb. 10 at 10:30 in the morning, the time being certified beyond all question. Well the case is clear and simple. A. B. had been a widower for half a hour when he married and could, of course, legally do so. But stay 1 When it was 10:30 in London it was 11:23 in Naples. Had a telegram been dis- patched instantly after the wife's death -it would have reached Naples a few minutes later than 11:23, and Mould have found A. B. a married man of over 20 minutes stand. ing ! His firat wife died, in fact, 23 minu- tes subsequently to the Naples marriage, though that was authentically declared to have taken place at 11 A. M., and the wife's death was with equal certainty shown to have taken place at 10:30. Was the mar- riage legal and valid, or bigamous and null ? Adolphus Trollope, in Notea and Quer- ies. ANTS FOR EATING. They are blood as L'lcleles—Sonne as Large as Foxes. Should a Maine lumberman find a stump or rotten log with 'thousands of big black outs in it, says the Pittsburg Dispatch, he scoops the torpid limas from thole winter domicile and tills his dinner pail with them. When ho gets back to his camp at night he sets the pail in a cool place until his supper is ready, then brings it forth, and, while helping himself to pork and beans, helps himself a/so to ants. There fano accounting for tastes, and he esteems a handful of ants a very choice morsel. Ants are said by those who have . tasted them to have a peculiarly agreeable, strong. ly acid flavor. The woodsmen, whose food consists lamely of salted meat, baked beans and similar hearty- victuals, naturally have a craving for something sour. "Ants are the very best of pickles," said on old "log- ger," who confessed to having devoured thousands of them. " They are cleanly insects, and there is no reason why they should not be eaten, if one can got over a little squeamishness caused by the thought of taking such crawling things into his stomach. There is nothing repulsive among them, and when a man has once learned to ect the creatures as pikles Fie prefers them to any other kind." Ants have at various times and in differ- ent countries been quite extensively used in medicine, and formic acid, which was first obtained by distilling the bodies of these in- sects, but is now artifically prepared, is a well known and useful chemical product. Herotlotus tells of ante that live in the deserts of India which are in size "somewhat less than dogs,.; but larger than foxes," These creatures, in heaping up the earth alter the manner of common ants, were a very efficient aid to the Indian gold hunters. The sand which they throw up being large- ly mixed with gold, the Indians were accus- tomed to go to the desert in the heat of the day, when the ants wore under ground, load the sand into sacks, pile the sacks uf.on. their camels and hasten from the spot as quickly as possible. The ants, ac- cordin,:; to the historian, were not only the swiftest of animals, but were gifted with such a sense of smell that they immediately became aware of the presence of men in their territory, and unless the Indians got away while tho ants were assembling to attack them not a man could escape. She's outgrown Der Dress. fi MISS CANADA.---" I wouldn't have that Stare and Stripes dress on any account ; that Federation affair wouldn't fit mo, and be- sides, I don't like the cut of it ; but I just dote on that Independence outfit ! ' Ono thing 19 certinn, I 010 getting too big a girl to continue wearing THIS dress 1" Ranching in Leto Northwest. The ranchers speak very confidently of the capabilities of the country in this re- spect. Some confine themselves chiefly to cattle, some have only horses, and nearer Calgary are sumo large sheep rinches. Yon must nnderstand whttt a rancher is• He is a man that knows everything—at least he thioles he knows everything, and any sug- gestion made by a pilgrim wot.ld only call forth ridicule. Well, a rancher thinks ho can succr''l in keeping his cattle from perishing during the severe winters without providing shelter. So far he has not suc- ceeded. The winters of 1886-7 were severe and the losses of cattle perishing wore large. To my mind, the smaller rancher, with a number of cattle that can he well looked after, androvid p od with shelter and food In winter, will pay best in the long run.
