A dentist who is well-known here tried hard to collect a bill, and after many ineffectual effoi'te said to the debtor : "I do not intend to send you any mr.o bills, and I don't intend to sl. vou; but there ie one thing I vy..lit Lb toll vou. Every time you cat off a piece of beefsteak and pass it to your wife, i want you to re- member that she isnot chewing that beef with her own teeth, nor your teeth, but my teeth." In two or throe days he received a check. A QUESTIONABLE ADVANTAGE. Lord IIougllton said of himself : "Having no duties to perform,I am obliged to put up with pleasure." People are said to ho in "easy circumstances," and "well off," when they have not to work for a living; but this is a very question- able advantage. The pains and penaltioe of idleness," soon teach us that we are really bad off, and in by no means easy circumstances when we have nothing to do. But, indeed' it is impossible to do noth- ing. We must either work usefully or do mischief. Now, as it is noon every one that can invent useful work for himself, it is far happier for us to have some necessary em- ployment. Recreation after work is good, but "a life of pleasure is a life of pain. A PARALYZED BISHOP. There is a good story told of the late Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Trench. In hie latter years the good Archbishcp had the idea that he was suffering from incipient paralysis, and he was always fancy- ing that he detected more or less of a numbness in his limbs. On one occasion he was at a dinner -party, and it was noticed that be was quite silent for a -while and- looked grave.' At the same time it was discovered that the lady at his right hand side was blushing deeply. At last his Grace said in a lamentable voice : "My ViVrilt feat# :$xe tealized'; th,ere eon be 310 lQuger spy .dpulJt of it." "Of what 1" salted the ayrnpathe- ti4 hostess,, "That parai.sia has really taken hake of me," answered the Arell- biehop. "1 em euro of it. L have been pinching my r;ght knee for several minutes and I cannot feel the least sensation." The lady on his right was able to comfort him. "I hope it is not so bad as you think," she said : "it was my knee you were.pirebing." A silk dress feels very like a silk apron, hence the Archbishop's clia• take. -Irish Times. A BOY ADOPTDD BY A COW. A writer in the November St. Niohulas Says :-"A letter from Kansas has a surprising story, my friends. It tells me of it cow who, when she had lost her calf, Showed so niuch sorrow that it awakened the sympathy of her owner's foul teen -year-old sop, and he eho.wed her some slight kindness. The grateful cow at once became fond of hien, watched for him as she would for her calf, and since then she has shown her pleasure whenever he comes near her. Indeed no onev but this boy can manage the poor animal, and wonderful stories are told of her devotion to him. The Kansas papers say that lately the boy had occasion to go to a neigh boring town, and as he roinaiued uwtty until after milking time, his sister, nut d; ring to approach the caw in any other way, decided to personate het brother. So she put on a suit of his clothes and went into the barnyard. The girl sac. ceeded in deceiving the cow until the boy was seen coming up the read, when instantly the iudiguaut animal kicked the pail over made a bound in the direction of the youth, showing unmistakable evidences of delight." TIPS FOR BOTH OF US. Ram's Horn : It is not the good we intend to do to -morrow, but that we are dujng today that the devil is afraid or. When the devil wants a man he doesn't care how near he sits to the pulpit when he goes to church. Nothing makes us go to working the guld minus within us like ad• versity. The man'' who needs the ;news• paper the most is generally the first to atop it. The devil will be very polite un- til he gets a rope around your neck. Selling Christ always means to buy your own grave with the pro- ceeds. He is as near to the palace as heaven is to the death -bed. The man who loves his neighbor as himself never koops a bulldog.. God's pruning is always done with a sharp knife. Don't try to carry all your reli- gion in yout.' head. Joint debates with the devil never lifts the world au inch to• wards Christ. The devil isn't much afraid of the man who isn't sure whether he believes all the Bible, Jesus Christ never tried to Slake a bargain with any man to follow him at so much a month. --- : In And About The County. - Mary Pickwell, who is now olerking .in e, Qaoen street store, Toronto, has issued a writ for $5,000 against Andrew Coxon, a merchant of P1a tiville, where Mary formerly resided. The reasons for which damages ale claimed are breach of promise of marriage, sboduction and slander. - Sunday morning last a well-known farmer of North Dumfries, who is also a prominent church member and a pious well living man, might have been seen busily engaged in plowing, entirely obli- vious of the fact that he was desecrating the Sabbath, having forgotten what day of the week it was. A friend happening along that way inft'rmed him that it was Suuday, and Communion Sunday at that, 1110 look of consternation that over- apread his countenance eau more readly be imagined than described. With the assistance of his friend, the teatn was quickly unhitched, and making his way to the house he teas soon ready and on his way to church, where he would no doubt make ample amendsfor his forget- fullnees in the morning. -Galt Reporter, --Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Horton, of Owen Sound, on Saturday celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding. EDITORIAL NOTES. It will be remembered tht.t sometime ago the Greenway Government of Mani toba passed an Aot abolishing Separate Schools in that Province. It was held that Separate Schools were not in ex- istence there at the time the Province became part of the Dominion and that consequently the Confederation Aot did not guarantee their perpetuity as it did to those in the older Provinces. After going though the lower oourts, the Supreme Court of Canada has now de. oided that the Manitoba Aot is unoou- etitntional and that Separate Sohoole a annotrundePthe-' o eration-Bogie'- abolished in that Province. Premier Greenway will parry the case to the Privy Council of England, the highest Court in the empire. -CAIN ONE POUND A bay.
