MISS LiZZIE CUNNINGHAME,
brunette beauty from Ireland, re
ceived a surprise at the barge office
office, New York, last Sunday.
Lizzie, with a cousin, arrived on
the city of Chicago, and tEe pair
waited at the barge office for the
arrival of relatives. In the after-
noon Lizzie's sister came pp, and the
greeting was vary cordial until the
latterpulled the covering off a two
months' old babe, which she car-
ried in her arms. The babe was
ebony in its blackness, and Miss
Cunninghame fainted at the specta
cle. The mother of the infant
triad to explain to Lizzie that the
child was well derived, at the same
time beckoning to a sturdy bolored
man who stood in the background.
The colored man approached to be
introduced to his sister -in law, but
Lizzie refused to notice him. The
colored man said be was a Hiber-
nian and that his name was Mc-
Graw, which appeared to satisfy
Mies Cunninghame, she merely

REGULATING STAIRWAYS. — The
Municipal Act is now eo amended
as to make municipalities to regulate
the construction and width of stair-
ways in churches, theatres and halls
or factories, warehouses, hotels,
boarding and lodging houses.
ACQUITTED.—J. W. Cook, charg-
ed with stealing certain photographic
apparatus while in the employ of
W. J. Stringer, of Luoknow, ap-
peared before Judge Toms ou Mee
day last, E. Campion, Q. C., con-
ducting the defence. The evidence
of Stringer utterly failed to justify
the charge of larceny, and Cook was
acquitted without any evidence for
the defence being called on.
BE HOME—TRUE.—NOW is the
summer of the rank growth of gor-
geous dead -wall misrepresentations,
when the most amusing part of the
many alien one-horse shows that
flaod the land is the deceptive post-
ers. These wandering jaw shows
are a success in one way. They atm
teed in taking the good money of citi-
zens out of town which it were better
-to expend in town. Our people
should reserve their dimes for such
deserving affairs as that gotten up
for the 1st of July. Canada for
Canadians and Clinton for Clinton-
itos.
PUBLIC SCHOOL NOTES.—An ex-
change says :—The new School
Acte are now in force. The regula-
tions are being revised, and it is
expected that the acts and regula-

Inspectors, not later than the end
of October.—In the meantime the
School Inspectors have been sup-
plied with a few copies of the
School Acts alone to be furnished
to any Board of Truateee urgently
needing them.—Only Boards of
Trustees of cities, towns and villages
may collect a fee, or otherwise pro
vide funds to buy the pupils books
and other school supplies ; rural
trustees hav3 n0 such power.

SUNDAY wan the fifty-fourth anni-
versary of t}be Queen's coronation.
Monday quite a large number assem-
bled at Westfield, East Wawanosh,
S. S. No. 6, to "raise the flag" that
was awarded Miss Buchanan, a pupil
of the school there, by the Empire
for the best essay on "The Flag on
he School House," It was a fitting
day on which to display the result
of a Huron maiden's tribute to the
old flag—the coronation day of Bri•
tain's maiden Queen.' For fifty-four
years as maiden, wife, mother and
widow has good Queen Victoria
wielded the British sceptre over the
wide domain of the happiest people
in the world ; from where wintry
blasts bind all nature in eternal
icy chains to where the rays of the
torrid sun quiver down among the
palm groves. May Mies Buchanan
be as honored in her sphere for fifty-
-four of more years as QueenVictoria
has been in her more elevated one.

ich and School Inspector Robb, of
Clinton,went out,and we would have
