SIR —By a late issue of the Wingbam
Advance I notice that paper claims that
"there ere more fa. horeei in 1Vingh •m
than any other town in wester nOntaiio."
This calla to man,1 nuo:hor liar who
asserts that "there ,aria rn a o fast woolen
in Wingham than in any other town in
Ontario." And atilt eunther chips iu
with the as;ertinn that "there ie more
siiesipatinn ttomegst the honinese men of
ItVtnghamthou rnother towe ul lrkop nu
lation in Ontario." I seriously don't
bslieve there is either woman or horse in
Wingham eo yery "swift" as properly
to be placed in the charmed circle. (2 30
list). But though there be, -I just want
to ask these raec•tls, in the language of
the lite Lamented Mr, 1'hpe, "What you
goin' to do about it. COSMO.

--Dn Tuesday evening, James, the 10 -
year -old ane of MI. George Stewart, con.
seven, Kincardine township, while' on
rhie way home from school climbed a tree
on the roadside to vet a few gads for hie
'eohoolma•es. Re fell down and injured
himself so severely that he had to be
parried home and in six hours the poor
boy was dead.
—About a year ego Mr. henry C,,le'a
thorse'rau away in liramptcu and he was
thrown out of his buggy, hart his collar
'hone broken and sustained other iujnries.
It was claimed that the horse was
frightened by a dog belonging to Rev.
'G. B. Cooke. Mr. Cooke stated that he
had no knowledge that the animal was a
dangerous one, but rather than have any
trouble over the matter agrted to pay
ere dootor'a bill for attending Mr. Cole's
injuries. This, however, was not ac-
mepted and a law suit was entered in
Wellington County Court, a claim of
$200 for datnages beiug rnade. The
case came up for hearing at Guelph last
Thursday. The evidence was not sufti-
acient, in the Jaige'e opinion, to show
that the dnfeudant was aware the dog
was a vicious one, and he dismissed the
,ease with costs. Mr. Cooke generously
agreed to pay his own witnesses' fees.
—Squire J. H. Priestley, of Ailsa
Craig, was committed f.rr trial by ltie
brother magistrate. Squire J. B. Smyth,
of London. But Squire Priestly is not
languishing in a dungeon cell nn the
-head of it ; he eeoured bail of $500 and
is now tree until the sitting Of the first
court ot competent jurisdiction to try
his case. Tne magistrate's violation of
the law happened in this wise :—'Iwo
citizens of the village had a dispute as to
which candidate one of them voted for
in the election for reeve, and a bet was
offered on the question. But there was
'no way of deciding the matter, until the
mad eco sed of voting crooked offered
to go before Squire Priestly acid swear
that he had not voted as his opponens
said. The oath was taken, and it is pre -
:mimed the bet was paid ; but a business
man of the village, thinking he had
•caught the magistrate tripping, secured a
legal opinion, and was about to lay an
information against him for vi"lation of
the statute tit admioietering such an
oath. The penalty in ouch cameo is a
.fine of not less than $S0. However, Mr.
Priestley was determined that his friends
.at home should not enjoy the laugh at
him ; so he comes to town also, and con-
sults a lawyer, under whose direction on
information is laid before Squire J. B.
Smyth with the result stated.
—Utica, I11., the busy little ce•
went and brick manufacturing town,
and The seat of many cosy and pret-
ty homes, was devastated by a cloud-
burst on Thursday ; not a dwelling
or place of business escaped.
—Three children living in Emer-
lek township,Nebraeka, were drown-
ed during a storm while trying to
reach the house from school on
Thursday.
