Though by education and personal leanings he was Conservative, he did not shrink from dealing with very large questions which were novel or with now ideas. His success in public life demonstrates his poesession of important quali- ties to which success was largely owing. He was a conciliatory man, an able administrator, an ef- fective debater. He bad great ideas, was very clearheaded, had an excellent memory, and was on various subjects exceptionally well. informed. Ho poseeased, also, in an eminent degree the art of pleas- ing those whom he came in contact with, being a genial man, with a keen sense of humor and consider- able wit. Few men with like opportunities made so many friends as he, or had 80 many admirers, or have in death been mourned by so large a section of the general public as he will. THE ONLY SENSIBLE GRIT JOURNAL. Belleville Ontai'0. The Ontario is proud of itself. It is the only Liberal paper in Canada that has not selected a premier and constructed a cabinet during the past week, The reason is that we know nothing about the matter and are not fond of talking of subjects about which we know nothing. All the other papers were ovally ignorant on this subject yet talked as if they were the oracles of wisdom and the recepta- cles of state secrete. Wo never could see the sense of idle specula., tions and elaborate conjectures founded on nothing but mere suppo- sitions or ever.shifting rumors. According to these speculations Canada will have half a dozen premiers and half of the Tory members in the house will be in the cabinet. Some eyen had the Governor-General seeding for Laurier to carry on the govern, went in the house with a substa tial Tory majority. KEEP CREEDS OUT OF POLI ICS. Toronto Telegram. A. double -headed Cabinet with standard-bearers of the two great churches of Christendom in it may bo a necessity but certainly is not a fulfilment of our highest hopes. Earnest, thinking Canadians are tired of these see -saw governments, loaded up with so many Roman Catholics, so many lukewarm Protestants, and one or two Orange- men. The system of taking men for what they are worth as sectaries not citizens is unspeakably offensive. comes too often in this c p e G C ne Pr An eminent Scotch clergyman happened to dine with some learned lawyers of the Edinburgh bar. He appropriated to himself a large dish or Dresses, upon which he fed voraciously. Erskine, wishing to admonish him for this diecourtesy. remarked : "Doctor, yuu remind tee of Nebuchadnezzer in hie degrada- tion." Just as this pat allusion was caus- ing roars of laughter from the legal lights, the reverend vegetable eater retorted : "Ay, do I mind ye o' Nebuchad- nezzar 1 Doubtless because I am eating arnong the brutes." The "sly question" is often ex- tremely effective. Sheridan, who was always distressed for money, was one day backing his face with a dull razor, when he turned to his eldest son and said : "Tom, if you open any more oysters with my razor I'!l cut you off with a shilling." "VERY WELL, FATHER," SAID TOM, "But where will you get the shill- ing?" At a dinner party in England the host introduces to the favorable notice of the company, amid mur- murs of admiration, a splendid truffled pheasant. "Isn't it a beauty 1" he saga. "Dr. So -and -So gave it to me; kill- ed it himself." "Aw-what was he treating it for 1" says one of the guests. "A smart answer" is quiteas good when unpremeditated. "I could write like Shakespeare if I had a mind to," said Words- worth to Lamb. "Yes, if you had a mind to," was Elia's quick reply. "Do you see anything ridiculous. in this wig 1" said a poulpous little age to Curran. "Nothing but the head," was the reply. The "quirkish reason" is nearly allied to these. And Abbe Boileau being asked why he always wrote in Latin, took a pinch of snuff and answered gravely. . "Why, for fear the bishops should read me !" Sheridan gave rather a shrewd intimation to a spinster who insisted upon accompanying him in a walk after a summer shower : "It has cleared up enough for one, madam, but not enough for two." The "lusty hyperpole" suggests one incident in the life of the elder ms. Having grown corpulent is old age, and averse to exercise, physician advised him to ride on seback. He consented to do so. ordingly a large, lofty trotter led to the door, and the vener- e ex -President mounted. He e down the avenue to the street a smart trot, then wheeled and urned. Being asked if he did t intend to ride any further he .lied '"No ! I would as soon ride Mount Ararat in an earthquake." "A crafty wresting of obvious matter to the purpose" is illustrated by Burke's witty response to Dr. Robertson, who apologized for Dr. Johnston's jokes -"like the rebukes of the righteous, which are like ex- cellent oil." "Oil 7" said Burke. "Yes, oil of vitriol." Diogenes indulged in a "tart irony" when, observing over the door of a school -room this inscrip- tion,"Let no deceiver enter here," he quietly asked : "How does the teaoher go in?" Almost all of Dr. Johnson's witticisms come under the head of '(presumptuous- bluntness," • ONE 017 HIS ROUGH REPARTEES has been put in rhyme by Peter to sh ea w Protestant, Scotch, Trish or Eng is , when the question of raising him to the Cabinet arises. If be be a Canadian, and a good Canadian, that and that a -lone is his title to advancement. Soon the terrible shower had battered him into a jellied, blood spattered mase, his very cloth- es showing great rents .through which the blood found vent and spurred freely. He wavered for a moment with his chin bobbing his cheat, and then, after doubling up at the knees and middle, fell in a heap, dead. Still the howling mob continued their terrible fusillade of stones un- til around the already lifeless body a cairn was formed completely cov- ering in the corpsa. And then the self, Meeting the Earl of Roches- ter one day -the witty peer exclaim- ed : "Doctor, I am yours to the ehoetie," to which the clergyman replied, "My Lord, I aryl yours to the ground." The peer continued, "Doctor, I am yours to the center." "My Lord," retorted the Doctor, I Iain yours to the Antipodes." De- termined not to be outdone by a -parson, his lordship said, "Doctor, I am yours to the lowest pit of hell," On which Barrow turned on his heel and said' "And there, my lord, I leave you." True wit, combined with reproof. I hope in reading this brief illus- tration of a long definition, you may not;be reminded ofDouglas Jerrold's retort to a would-be wit, who, hav- ing fired off all his stale jokes with no effect, exclaimed : "Why, you never laugh when I say a good thiug 8" "Don't I," said Jerrold. "Only trye with one l" W HAT A SO VIERSE I' (PA.) COUNTY MAN THINKS OF T HE INVALIDS' HOTEL AND SURGICAL 1NSrI TUTE, LOCATED AT BUFFALO, N. Y. W. H. Miller, of S;oyestown, Pa,, who has been Buffering for nearly a quarter of a century from an affection of the kidneys, resulting in the necessity for a surgical operation, after consult- ing and being treated by a number of our own dootore, as well ata receiving the treatment and advice of some or the moat eminent professional men of the land, finally became acquainted with the aboye Icstitute, and their mode and means of yreatment. After due corres- pondence with the World's Dispensary Medical Association, the proprietors of the Iavalide' Hotel, he was induced to visit said institution. On arriving there and after being fully acquainted with the abuodant means they possess, he lost nu time in maktug the necessary ar- rangements for the required treatment. After remaining for nearly four weeks at the Invalids' Hotel, where you receive the kindest and best treatment, and where patients are loth to leave, after reooc ery, he returned to his family and friends a cured and happy man. In giving this to the public, Mr. Miller wishes to say that he owes the aforesaid Institute nothing but his beet wishes. And the fact that his own sue - cess and great relief is due to similar testimonials from others who were suc- cessfully treated there for all manner of ohrouiu diseases from every State and Territory of the Union, Canada, Mexico, and South America. It is a marvel of success. Re further says, should this fall to the notice of any sufferers from chronic disease., such as neem to bailie the skill of your own physician -but firat and above all give your own physi- cians a fair and impartial trial, and all the available means offered, as Somer. set county may justly feel proud of her medical men, who spare no means nor time in the treatment of all oases en- trueted to their charge. And if they fail, in many oases, it will be an act of t m c 8. 8 "An eye for an eye and a Moth for a tooth." The dictum of the old law still holds good in Afghan- istan, says the Sheffield Telegraph. In fact, the manners, customs, and surroundings of the Afghans of to- day might be prototyped in the pages of the old testament aa faith- fully as the life of the Israelites. The Afghans are Mohammedans, it is true, but their religion is built on old law lines and their social life is as simple and patriarchal as when the great lawgiver Moses ruled the destinies of the people of Israel. For in Afghanistan of to -day oxen tread out the the corn and plow the fields; and the plow itself is a count- erpart of the Messina' instrument. Corn is ground in hand -mills and to goatskin serves as a "water -bottle." Household and farming utensils have changed nothing during the centuries that have elapsed since the Israelites tramped the desert by the Red sea. In short, you could 'find --4 series of "tableaux vivants" in the surroundings of Afghanistan of to day to fill up chapter by chap- ter the scenes depicted in the old testament. It is said that the Af- ghans are one of the loat tribes, and certainly so far as dogged- adher encs to Israelitiah notions is 0oncer ried they might be. There is no mistaking the Mose- ical parallel as far as the social cus- toms present themselves; but I watt astonished one evening, during the Russian scare, when I was on the Afghan frontier, to see the very 'Ii ilit'hdn-nl'`tlltr-osisraw-piniieh-- ment of stoning to death put in pra- tioe. ton twitching of nerve and muscle ceas- ed, and all was still.
