JUDGE DOYLE and railway mail clerk J. J. Doyle were in town Friday afternoon on their way to the Sault, bong called thither by the .serious i•l-luess of their mother. We lio,pe they will find Mrs. Doyle im- 1JT&vi,ug on their arrival. •Sonoon VACATIONS.—Certain changes have been made in the re- gulations of the school holidays we believe, •which •add a week to the 'total vacations. School will close on .June 30 and open ou the last Monday in August, in towns and incorporated villages, end in the country they open oue week earlier. All echoole open on Jan. 3rd after Christmas holidays, and the week following Good Friday will be a vacation, instead of school commen- cing after Easter Monday as former- ly. WHAT A COUNTY BRIDGE IS.— Mr. Justice Ferguson has decided that the county of Waterloo must maintain the Hamburg bridge, as it is on a leading road through the country, and the River Nith is a stream over one hundred feet in width. The whole case turned up- on the question of how the width of the stream was to be determined, and his Lordship ruled that this must be dune by measuring the actual width of the channel that the stream hail cut for itself from bank to bank, and not the width of the water at nuy particular stage. CoMMteSIONER of Public Works, Plummer, le busily engages' these days superintending the laying of sidewalks, and covered boxing in eewere. An excellent job has been made of the work on Orange St. The unsightly chasm beiug filled up and the dank effluvia which usually emauated from it in hot weather will not in future endanger the health of residents in the neighborhood. EGGS AND LAMBS HIGHER.—The Huron Expositor contains the fol- lowing :—Lamb buyers are again on their rounds, and are paying se high, if not a higher price than ever before. This, coupled with the fact that eggs have been selling twenty per Dent higher than they wet•o at the same season last year, goes to prove that Yankee restric- tion is not going to bring about our ruin and overthrow us just yet. BRUSSELS P08t :—Dr. J. W. Shaw has located at Clinton, occupying the office lately vaeated by Dr. Reeves, removed. Tho Clinton people will find in Dr. Shaw a first-class citizen. He took a high standing in his examina- tions, and will prove himself a care- ful, reliable and successful phy- sician, we have no doubt. Ou account of him being a modest young man we may add that he is good looking, unmarried, a success- ful tennis player, "Grit," Presby• terian and has a number of other excellent qualifications that may be had on application. THAT NUISANCE.—In publishing a Clipping from an exchange which called attention to the nuisance caused in some places by school grounds being littered with adver- tising matter we did not intend to convey the impression that thebchool authorities here were lax in regard to keeping the school grounds here tidy, as might be inferred from the item referred to. Principal Lough will not allow bills to be distribut- ed within the Model School en- closure, but sometimes finds it diffi- cult to prevent distributors of bills froiu blocking up the,: sidewalk in front of the school ,by getting a crowd around them. TOLLED TH'C BELT. AND PAID TOLL.—Thursday night or in the wee small hours of Friday a facetiously inelined individual sounded the fire alarm boll. Quite -rte' a number of citizens divested them• selves of the thralls of Morpheus and. hastily donning their apparel hied them to th' fire engine house, aqd the steamer w,.e about being tired up fur the fray when it was found out that the alarm was a false one. Tho citizens were wrathy and their anger would not he appeased until Mayor Doherty issued hand bills offering a reward of $20 for the conviction of the "joker." Constable Wheatley got ,on to the racket and summoned a - -young man named Gadsby before ,i;Custice Whitehead. The accused ,aGknowled; ed the corn and paid a tt6l;l.of $20 and $1 costs. Any justice of the peace, who becomes insolvent, ceases to be a qualified justice, and anyone now acting as a justice of the peace without necessary qualifi cation, on being reported to the Attorney -General will be etrnck off the rolls. All declarations taken or other acts dune by unqualified justices, by virtue of their offices, are illegal. These provisions are the results of recent legislation and decisions by the Attorney -General of Ontario. TROTTING STOCK.—The Chicago Horseman i.n a recent issue review• ing the stables of Mr. W. Doherty of Clinton, says :—"At the head of the stud is the chestnut horse Phil Patchen, five yenta by Rysdyk 3584 by Rysdyk 653; dam Nelly Patchen, by Geo. M. Patchen 4142. He is 16 hands high and is a grand look- ing horse, FIe is a recent purchase and will be handled by 'Jimmy.' ' The Victoria Warder quotes the preceding and adds : Tho above noble animal is from James McKeya famous Phil Rysdyk , of Victoria Road in this county, by John Mak- ius' well known mare. John Park• erin town has a full brother to the above, and though only two can al- ready do the mile in considerably lees than three minutes. JUDGE DOYLE is the possessor of au antiquated calender. He had an appniet, nent to Bold court here ou Wv. i tie shay lust, the 20th inat.,' in the forenoon That calender pointed to Thursday as the 20th. It was about noon when his Honor discovered the mistake. There being no train at that time and the Judge not being a professioual pedestrian sprinter there was noth- ing for him to do in order to keep the appointment as nearly ab pos_i bre on time but to hire a horse, which he did, and drove down, and it is said made time that would throw in the shade that made by John Gilpin of pleasant memory. Indeed it is a question whether the Judge is not liable for furious driv• 4n -g— But'-tlttr '-lsaly-furintrtr =work was nut his driving.
