HALE AND STRONG AT 114.
CHEWED TOBACCO FOR MORE THAN A
CENTURY AND REMEMBERS
WASHINGTON.
Richard Reddick, born in Rich-
mond county, Va., July 4, 1777," is
a transcript from public records
that is held by Mr. Reddiok him-
self as an evidence of what he can -
eiders divine favor.
"I will be 114 years old next
July 4," was the answer Mr. Red -
dick made to a reporter's question
yesterday, and, with a laugh, he
added : "I am living on borrowed
time now."
The words were spoken in a
clear, crisp tone, 4nd came from a
man who not o0y by legal docu-
ment, but by the recalling of inci-
dents of eighteenth century date,
proved himself to be as old as he
claimed. Roddick is a colored
man who lives • with his aged wife
at Bridgewater, Beaver county.
When seen he was seated on the
doorstep of his humble dwelling.
His wife was seated by his side, and
the two were talking of religion.
The old man had just returned
from his day's work and was resting
himself. He was smoking a corn-
cob pipe. The pipe's age was more
doubtful than its owner's, end it
was something stronger. The theory
that tobacco will shorten life was
sadly demolished by this practical
illustration to the contrary. His
hearing was as keen as that of a
deer, and he answered questions
without a moment's hesitation.
Hie eyesight alone has become im-
paired.
In explaining the trouble with
his eyes, Reddiok unconsciously
commenced the story of his life.
"I was born in Riohmond," he said.
"My father was a slave, my mother
a free woman. Aa was the custom,
I having been born of a free

"This country was all woods
than. The feeling against negroee
was intense, and I remember that
at one time colored people' were
not allowed on Pittsburg wharf.
"When the war broke out I
wanted to join the northern forces,
but they would not take me on
account of being too old. Two of
my sons wen: out, though,
"I have seen nearly every presi-
dent, and met Washington often.
I suppose I am the only living
American who has the cheek to
claim that Washington failed to
keep his promise. When War
broke out, he offered freedom to
the slaves that would espouse the
cause of America. After they had
fought iri the winning fight, he did
not even use hie influence for their
emancipation.
"My coven children are scattered
all over the country. - They leave
mo to take care of myself, , and I
earn my living by doing gardening
for the neighbors. I have only
been sick twice in my life, once
with oholere and tile other time
with white,ewelling. I was never
prescribed for by a doctor, and take
no medicine:
"I take a drink of liquor when I
feel like it, but never get drunk.
I smoke and chew tobacco. I
learned to chew when a baby. I
swallow tobacco when my.. stomach
troubles me."
AN AGED VILLAIN.
While going home to dinner at
noon in Chicago one day last week
an old man with gray whiskers
approached Maudie Reynolds, aged
12 years, and asked her if she
knew where another little girl
lived. He Mowed up this remark
by,saying he knew where there was•
a lot of diamonds which sotne little
girl had lost, and asked her to come
with him and look at the jewelry.
The child unsuspectingly agreed to
accompany the man, and lie took
her far beyond Garfield Park on
Lake street. Mrs. Reynolds be-
came alarmed when Maudie did not
tomo home to dinner, and went to
the school, where some of Maudie's
playmates told the mother that she
had been seen going,.away with an
old man who "wanted to give her
some diamonds." °yrs. Reynolds
reported the case at the police
station, and a dispatch was sent out
to look for the child.
Maudie returned !Ionic at -- 5
o clock, crying as though her heart
would break and presenting a terri-
ble appearance. Her" clothes bad
almost been torn from her body:
Her little blue sack was all covered
with mud, and stripes of cloth had
been torn from the sleeves. The
child was Almost frightened to
death, and at first refused to tell
her mother what bad occurred.
She finally confessed that the old
man had taken her into .a saloon
and from there to the park, where
he had accompliahed his awful pun.
pose.
Captain Hayes detailed Officers
Welbasky and Meany on the case.
The old man told the little girl that
his name was Johnston,_ Several
cases of a similar character have
been reported recently, and 'the
pollee are very anxious -to latch the
scoundrel who makes a specialty of
enticing away little school children.
