• .o your friends, if you have an offensive
breath from Catarrh, to get rid of it as
soon as possible, to say nothing of your
own personal interest As there are
laws against allowing decayed matter in
the public streets, so ehoule there be
against tainting and polluting the atmos-
phere with some people's breath. Per-
haps as the nation advances with every
sanitary appliance, it will be fecund nec-
essary to purchase large quantities of

Chicago Bail.
The president of one of the lead-
ing colleges of Indiana—a man who
bourn a national reputatiou as one of
the most able educators in America -
recently was induced by one of the
college members to leave his musty
books and the close confinement of
the classroom and enjoy a day's out-
ing. This was accomplished only
after long and persistent effort on
the part of the- collegial), but at last
the old man consented to join his
young friend upon a quiet fishing ex-
pedition. "But, mind you, sir, I'm
not an angler and 1 am not versed
in woodcraft. If 1 go with you,"
said the professor, 'you must act as
instructor while I play the role of
pupil."
Arriving
at the brookeide the
young man produced the fishing.
tackle for the professor and himself,
and, after arranging the fortner's
outfit, said : "There you are, dot
tor. I've baited your (took, you
see, so all you have to do now is to
throw your line into the water
and wait fur a bite."
"But how long 86511 I wait?'
gravely inquired the professor -
"Well, that will depend entirely
upon the fish, you know. Do you
see that colortd float'? Keep your
eye on that and you can tell when
the fish bite. Now, then, sit down
here on the bank and wait till the fish
pull the float under water. '.hat's
all there is to it."
But the fish did not bite well and
the young man lioon walked down
the bank a short distance to try his
luck elsewhere. Again he moved
and again, until his gray,haired
friend was left many yards behind.
He was startled from his reverie by
beating a shout from the professor
and looking up stream he was as,
tonished to flee the old gentleman
running toward him as rapidly as
his sixty years would permit and
swinging his hat.

CURES FOR DIPHTHERIA.
It is said that nature has her own
remedy for every ill to which flesh
is heir- Some of her remedies have
not yet been discovered, and some
that have been found out have not
become generally known. Medical
science has long sought for a covers
eign remedy for the scourge of
childhood, diphtheria, yet the color-
ed people of Louisana, and perhaps
of other localities in the South,
have for years known and used a
cure which is remarkable for its
simplicity. It is nothing more nor
less than the pure juice of the pine•
apple.
•"The remedy is not mine," said a
gentleman, when interviewed, "it
has been used by negroes in the
swamps down South for years.
One of my children was down with
diphtheria and was in a critical con,
dition. An old colored twin who
heard of the case asked if we had
tried pine -apple juice. We tried it
and the child got well. I have

PARLIAMENTARY.
After recess Wednesday Mr.
Cameron (Huron) moved the second
reading of his 11111 to repeal the
Franchise, Act and all amendments
thereto, and to substitute the local
election laws of the several proviu•
ccs.
Sir John 'I'houlpson said it would
be ridiculous for tile House, within
three mouths after a general elec.
tion, to repeal the Act under which
the members were elected. It
would be saying that the franchise
under which the house was elected
was not a proper franchise, and
should the Bill be passed the Oppo•
sition would at once cry that there
should he another general election.
It' conclusion he moved that the
Bill be not read the second titue
now, but this day six Months hence.
Mr, ?sills followed in suppof-t of
the repeal of the Franchise Act,
Mr. Desjardius (L Islet) made his
maiden effort it' the house, and
created a very favorable impression.
He opposed the repeal of the Act,
and pointed out that while the
Opposition professed to be strobe
supporters of Provincial antouotuy
they seemed to forget that there
should be Dominion autonomy as
well. He did not believe that the
Provincial Governments should
have the right to say who should
elect members of the Dominion
Parliament. He pointed to the
Province of Quebec, and showed
how the lists in that Province were
manipulated in favor of the Local
Government.
Mr. Amyot defended the action
of the Quebec Government and sup
ported the repeal of the Franchise
Act.
Mr. Daly referred to the Mani-
toba Act, and claimed that the
Liberal Government of that Pro.
vines, had shown its approval of the
Dominion Franchise Act by pro,
viding for the use of the lista pre.
pared under it.• Ile compared th)•
local and Dominion Acts, end show-
ed that the latter was the fairest of
the two. The Dominion Franchise
Act was most liberal. In Mani-
toba it was virtually manhood suff-
rage, for every man twenty-one
years of age was able to earn $300
a year in that province.
Mr. Watson, the one represents•
tive of Gritisnl between Lake
Superior and the Pacific, confessed
that he was satisfied with the
conduct of the returning officer of
his constituency.
Mr. Charlton followed in favor of
repeal, after which the members
were called in and the Ilouse divid-
ed, with the result that the amend-
ment was carried by a vote of 112
for, to 85 against.
—Rev. E. R. Carswell, a noted
Baptist evangelist, of Georgia, after
a careful revision of the calculations
of Cummins concerning the prophe-
sies of Daniel relative to the world's
coming to an end, has placed the
final overthrow of all things in the
year 1901. He makes an ingenious
and interesting calculation, and
