UR. J. A• CORDON, IN CHICAGO, (.0N - TIMES HIS TALKS ON THE NAT - TURK AND OFFICES OF THE IIOLY (HOST, A large audience gathered in the hall to hear Dr. A. J. Gar - clout. "To day we are to take up the intercession of the Spirit, which was only touched upon at the close of the last lecture. We referred to Jesus Christ as living forever within the veil, which was su significant to the Jew of the old dispensation. "In Jude xx. we find the ex- pression 'praying in the Holy Ghost.' What is the requisite in in order to acceptable prayer— to bray according to the will of God? It is as though when we come to God in prayer Jesus Christ him- self came. That is the eoudition of acceptable prayer. All the difflcul ties about prayer will be solved when you realize this—that though the promise is unlimited as far as the word 'whosoever' goes, yet it i8 liutiLd by the word8'in toy mare,' because it lutist be in Hint or it is not according to His will. How can we know whether it is accord ing to His will, That is what the Holy Spirit is given us for. ""Phis is brought out in Rumens viii., 26 27. In other words, the Spirit is sent iuto our hearts to bring us into perfect conformity with God's will. Many take the text, with reference to two which are agreed touching anything which they shall ask, and say, 'Let you and me agree about this thing and ask God fun' it.' You ask but do not get it, yet you say you have the promise. The meaning of the Greek word is harmonize, sym- phoniz'. A piano tuner must not only briug each separate key into tune with some other key, but they must all nn brought to a common hal twony. "1)o you want a revival in your church 4 Find out what God wants. There aro two or three things that He always wants: 'I exhort that playe>"s and intercession be made for all mea.' 'Who will have all men to be saved.' 'Who gave Him- self a ransom for all.' These three make a complete chain in which we can pray with acceptance and satis- faction. 'This is the will of God, that every man that soeth the Son and believeth on Ilim shall have eternal life.' George Muller said he had planted himself on that text. lie had names on his list- that he had, prayed for for forty years, and he knew he should get the answer be- cause he was praying according to God's will. the greatest inatrumeuts iu the Lord's hand, preaching iu the power of the Uoly• Spirit, and winning many souls to Christ." PRESERVING TOMATOES. Philadelphia Record: Tomatoes have fallen under the doctors' ban, and Philadelphia canners and jub bars are in a state of mind. So are the customers, for as an article of of diet the tomato has a front seat. One physician sends forth a note of warning iu the shape of a state- ment thlt tomatoes forte au exceed• ugly hurtful article of diet. He declares in all seriuusuees that their continued use injures the walls of the stomach, interferes with the action of the aalivary glands, im- pairs digestion and sends untold thousands to an early grave. To all this the grower, the canner and the grocer, not to speak of the tnid- diewan, respond with a sneer. Thousands of bushels of tomatoes and hundreds of thousands of the cauued article are used every year iu this city. Nearly everybody likes and uses them, and they are an indispeusible discs ou the table. So, if their use induces ill -health or may cause death if persistently con- tinued in, the scientific warning is both timely and appropriate. CANADIAN NEWS NOTES. —Saturday afternoon, as the Michigan Central express was near- ing Tamworth, Ont., the engineer observed three wen walking on the track towards the eugiue. As the train drew near, two of the men stepped oil' to one side of the track, but the third was slow in getting oil', and was struck by tate engine and hurled through the air to the feuee. The engineer applied the air brake and stopped the train as quickly as possible, and backed up to where the accident occured, wheu the train reached the spot the inn who was struck by the engine was standing with his tw,a companions placidly winding a handkerchief over his left hand, and remarked when the engineer asked if he was hurt : "It never touched ore." The man, who gave his name as George Wright, a molder belonging to Hamilton, was under the influence of liquor. Ile was placed on board the train and taken to St. Thomas, where 1)r. Smith attended to him. His only injury consists of two broken fingers. How Wright escaped death is a mystery, as the train was running at the rate of a mile a minute when it struck him. "We find in Hebrews i., 3,Christ is the brightness of the Father's glory and the express image of His person. The word in the Greek is tho same as our word character, it carries with it the idea of the image struck from .a die. The Son represented the Father exactly as every line of a die is re- presented by the image struck from it. Aud God means us to be in the exact image of Jesus Christ. "How is this to be done! The Holy Spirit does it in us. "Tile tuost explicit promise con netted with the Holy Spirit is that of power. In a remarkable way He was declared to be the Son of God 'in power.' He put himself under limitations here, but when He rose from the dead and ascended into heaven IIe took again the power which Ile had surrendered. From Luke xxii., 69, we see His connec- tion with the power of God above. IIe has this word 'power' ascribed to him. In Acts i., 48, is the promise that His disciples shall re- ceive the •same thing which He has. In Acts ;his word 'power' is con- stantly linked with the work of the Holy Ghost. "In regard to preaching, aro Ivo t) have this permanently 1 Not with man's wisdom. A man may may be as eloquent as an archangel and yet in the Scripture sense of the word, absolutely powerless. That is the difference between natural oratory and Scriptural oratory. Wo have all heard of Billy Pray. At one time he made up his mind that hie minister had not been converted, and taking his seat iu the rear of the church he devoted hunself to praying, not for a blessing on his preaching, but that God would convert him. This went on for some time until oue day he felt moved to ask that he might be converted that very day. The Holy Spirit came down upon upon him and wrought the great change while he was preaching, and though ho felt the change, the minister said nothing about it, but Billy Bray felt the change in him immediately and shouted 'The par- son's converted, the parson's con- vertett.' From that >time forward the minister, Haslam, became one of L THE PRONUNCIATION OF JEW. George Daniel's face presented a badly battered appearance, for which he blamed John Atkinson, who was arrested yesterday afternoon on a warrant sworn out by Daniel. ':\Ve board together," said Daniel, "and had a dispute about the pro- nunciation of the word ' Jew.' He argued that it was 'Due,' but I eon• tended it was 'Ju.' 'I'he argument waxed warm and he strucic mo a hard blow on the face." Atkinson pleaded that he simply acted in Self-defence. The evidence did not sustain his excuse, and his Worship unposed a fine of $l and costs or 10 days, remarking to the defendant that it was a small thing to quarrel about, and, besides, he was wrung about his pronunciation, too The above is from a Toronto police court report. LONDON, Feb. 18.—At Newton Abbott, Devonshire, yesterday, Rev. Dr. Pope was fined .£2 for brawling in church. Dr. Pope attended a re- ligious service on Sunday, and while cortnunion was beingadmin- istered walked up to the officiating clergyman, wrested the chalice from his hands, and drank the wine, while standing near the altar rail, I)r. Hope then returned the empty chalice to the clergyman, remarking in a voice that could he heard all over the church, "Vou'r° no Chris- tian. You are unfit to administer the Communion," By this time Dr. Pope was greatly excited. Ile stood gesticulating near the altar dnriug the rest of the service. The court to day was crowded with clergymen and others. Arvid considerable ex- citement Dr. Pope said at first he was not guilty, and afterwards pleaded guilty and apologized for his conduct in the church. Dr. Pope's lawyer said hie client,s mind had becatne unbalanced, and it would not bo just to bo too severe upon him. —J >ar ph C >s: igen, a young Eng! A- mon, who 01,>e from• lir. Ggilvie & Co., said unre- stricted reciprocity would, in his opinion, kill the Canadian milling industry more completely and more quickly than anything else. The Minneapolis mills, with their large output, would immediately swamp the Canadian market, and there would be nothing for our millers to do but to shut up shop, The result would be that hundreds of people throughout the country would be thrown out of work, or, at the best, if the mills were able to keep open, they would have to"work at reduc— ed wages.
