NEWSPAPER LAWS
We call the special attention of Pos
nesters and subscribers to the followin
synopsis of the newspaper laws :—
' 1—A postmaster is required to rive
notice BY LETTER (returning a paper does
cot answer the law) when a subscriber does
not take his paper out of the office, and
state the reason for its not being taken.
Any neglect to do so makes the postmaster
responsible to the publishers for payment
2—If any porsun orders his paper dis-
•ontinued, he must pay all arrearages, 1
the publisher may continue to send it
until payment is made, and collect till
whole amount, whether it be taken froze
the office or not. There can be no legs,
discontinuance until the payment is made,
3—Any person who takes a paper from
the post -office, whether uirected to his
aame or another, or whether he has sub-
scribed or not, is responsible for the pay
4—If a subscriber orders his paper to be
stopped at a certain time, and the publish-
er continues to send it, the subscriber is
bound to pay for it if he takes it out of the
post -office. This proceeds upon the ground
that a man mrist- pay for what he uses
War In the Division Court in Goderich
at the November sitting a newspaperul-
lisher sued for pay of paper. The defend-
ant
efend -
ant objected paying oh the ground that lie
had ordered a former proprietor of the
paper to discontinue it. The Judge hold
that that was not a valid defence. The
plaintiff, the present proprietor, had no
noti,e to discontinue and consequently
could collect, although it was not denied
that defendant had notified former pro-
prietor to discontinue. In any event
defenartt . Was bound to pay for the time
Ito had received the paper and until he
;had paid ell arreai'a due for subscription.
