THE TREES.
(Intended for last week.)
To 4he Miter of the (.'Linton ,New Arts
SER, -I agree with Hr Searle's idea,
as expressed in his letter in your paper
of last week, regarding the pruning
and regulating the distances between
our street shade. trees. In' my travels
through towns and cities in the States,
the trees are pruned up higher, and
are farther apart, than here, thus giv-
ing them a more stately appearance,
and admitting the sun and air to the
lawns, makingnicer grass plots in
front of the ouses, and giving the
sidewalks a chance to dry. If the own-
ers of lots would request the council to
make the improvement, no doubt it
would be done, and as at this time of
the year all the broken limbs could be
seen, and persons would not be so
ready to object as when the tree is in
full leaf. If not done now, when some
of the trees are small, it will have to be
done when they are large, and it will
disfigure them to a greater degree.
Yours, CITIZEN.
BOOK NOTICES.
DARKNESS AND DAYLIGHT, -We have re-
ceived from the publishers, Messrs Worth-
ington & Co., Hartford, Conn., a handsome
work bearing the above title. It deals with
slum life in New York, is written conjoint-
ly by a lady city missionary, an editor, and
the Chief of Police. It is beautifully illus-
trated by 250 engravings taken from life,
and is one of the most intensely interesting,
and at the same time graphio, pen pictures
we have read for some time. Although
dealing with the lower phases of life, the
book is pure in thought, and elevating in
tone, showing the work that is being done
by missions to reach the low classes, and
gives such an insight into life as ono could
only get by personal contact with it. In a
word, it is thrillingly captivating. The
book should have a wide sale. An adver-
tisement relating to it will be found in an-
other column.
Grips Comic Almanac for '92 will be the
thirteenth issue of that popular annual,
and the publishers have determined that it
shall break the record for brilliancy, hum-
or and t)ipographic beauty. Amongst the
features of it will be a double page Cartoon,
entitled, "The Dioken's Christmas Party,"
in which a large number of our public men
will figure in more or less appropriate
characters, from the works of the great
novelist. Specialillustrations are being
prepared for the Almanac by Mr Wm.
Bengough, Mr S. J. West, Mr E. S. Bis-
bee, Mr Chas. Broughton, Mr Bert Thomp-
son, Mr Chas. W. Bradley, Mr A. H. Howe
and and many other artists, and the letter-
press will be, as usual, of a light and amus-
ing oharacter. The work is up be brought
out in the highest style of the printers'
art, though there will be no inorease in
price -10 cents. Keep Grip's forthcoming
Almanac in mind. It will be out some-
time in Nobember,
GROWING OLD GRACEFULLY.
• "What a lovely old lady," I heard a
man I Lb.lark, at the opera, lately. "She's
quite RS beautiful as any girl in the house.
Such color and complexion is rarely seen
in a woman past forty."
Indeed, the woman of whom he spoke
was lovely. Her face was clear and
smooth, her cheeks fresh and rosy, her
eyes bright with perfet health and the en-
joyment of life. She has passed the "cri-
tical change of life" without falling into
"the sere and yellow leaf," as most Ameri-
can women do. How had she succeeded in
doing this ? Simply by using Dr Pierce's
Favorite Prescription, at a time when na-
ture stood in need of some assistance. She
had taken it at the right time, and did not
"trust to luck"in getting through the critical
and trying period safely. This standard re-
medy is just what is needed at such a
time. It is, from girlhood to old age,
women's best friend. In all diseases pe-
culiar to the sex, it accomplishes what no
other remedy, does -a cure. Take it,
women, when life's autumn begins, and
"grow old gracefully." Your money back
if it doesn't help you.
The Empire is sending out a Premiun
with its Weekly this fall which will be
highly prized by the friends and followers
of the late Premier of the Dominion. It is
in the shape of a Memorial Album, illus-
trating the career of Sir John Macdonald,
from his birthplace in Glasgow to his last
resting place in Cataragni Cemetery. The
series of handsome views are in photogra.
vure, executed in a manner that is a credit
to Canadian art, and comprise an excellent
photograph of the old Chieftain, taken a
short time previous to his death; a hand-
some portrait of hie devoted widow, the
Baroness Macdonald; his birthplace in
Glasgow, being a view of Brunswick Place
near the Trongate, whioh will be recogniz-
ed by all who are familiar with that oity;
a portrait of Sir John as a young man,
being a facsimile of the earliest photograph
known to be in existence; an exoellent and
striking likeness of his mother, from whom
he inherited hie force of character and
genius; the old home on Rideau street,
Kingston, in which he lived during the
rebellion of 1887; the finest 'view ever pub-
lished of Earnsoliffe, his well known resi-
dence in Ottawa; interior view of the Sen-
ate Chamber. as it appeared with the body
lying in state, showing the floral tributes
and members of Parliament guarding the
remains, with the Queen's wreath resting
on the coffin; view of Parliament Buildings,
with funeral processing forming its front;
the funeral passing the Eastern block, with
fine view of the buildings; magnificent
view of the City Hall, Kingston, draped as
it appeared on morning of funeral; beauti-
ful photograph of the grave at Cataraqui
Cemetery, with the floral offerings as nd
Cadets guarding it; exterior view of West -
minister Abbey in whioh memorial ser-
vice was held, from a celebrated etching;
photographio view of St Paul's Cathedral,
in which it is proposed to erect memorial
tablet; interior of St Paul's Cathedral, Tho
cover of this collection of photogravures is
a beautiful work of art, the title being
richly embossed in silyor, with a medallion
of the Chieftain in relief, surrounded b.,
his now memorable words, "A British
snbjeot,I was born, a British subject I will
die, while the background sh ows shield
with the British arms, and the whole is
surmounted with drapery in royal purple,
fringed with silver.
It is understood that Mr J. Israel Tarte,

now standing against it Domes on for trial.
The combination of ingredients found in
Ayer's Pills renders them tonic and cura-
tive as well as carthartio. For this reason
they are the best medicine for people of

There 4s a tune to keei) silou0o, but it

ease of e4 bop mentioned, who lives lig
an Ontario town. He got a diver in
his foot, and in spite of his protesta-
tions his mother decided to put a poul-
tice over his wound. The boy vigor-
ously resisted,
"Iwon't have nopoultice, "he declared
stoutly.
"Yes you will, Eddie," declared both
mother and grandmother, firmly; and
the majority being two to one, at bed-
time the poultice was ready.
If the poultice was ready the boy was
not, and he proved so refractory that
a switch was brought into requisition.
It was arranged that the grandmother
should apply the poultice, while the
mother was to stand with the uplifted
switch at the bedside. The boy was
told that if he "opened his mouth" he
would receive that which would keep
him quiet. As the hot poultice touch-
ed the boy's foot he opened his mouth.
"You-' he began.
"Keep still,"said the mother, shak-
ing her stick, while the grandmother
busily applied the poultice.
Once more the little fellow opened
his mouth.

But the uplifted switch awed him
In a minute more the poultice was
firmly in place, and the boy was tucked
in bed.
"There, now," said the mother,
"the old sliver will be drawn out and
Eddie's foot will be all well."
As the mother and grandmother

voice came from under the bed-

"You've got it on the wrong foot!"
THAT LITTLE TICKLING
In your throat, which makes you cough
once in a while and keeps you constantly
clearing your throat, arises from catarah,
and as catarrh is a constitutional disease
the ordinary cough medicines all fail to bit
the spot. What you need is a constitu-
tional remedy like Hood's Sarsaparilla.
Many people who have taken this medicine
for scrofula, dyspepsia, loss of appetite, and
other troubles, haye been surprised that it
should cure this troublesome cough. But
to know the uotual cause of the cough is to
solve the mystery. Man`y, cases of con-
sumption oah be traced back to the neglect
of some slight affection as this. Consump-
tion can be controlled in its early stages,
and the effect of Hood's Sarsaparilla in
pnrifying the blood, building up the gener-
al health, and expelling the sorofulus taint
whioh is the cause of catarrh and consump-
tion, has restored to perfect health many
persons on whom this dreaded disease
seemed to have a firm hold.

The lunacy of George S. Knight, the
once popular actor, is said to have as-

The average Atlantic steamer is
manned by about 150 men, as follows:
Thirty-two deck hands, 4 officers, 9
petty officers, 32 firemen, etc., 8 engin-

chief officials -that is, mates and en-

crew are chosen by the captain. First
class ships muster from 12 to 15 men in
each watch, and all of these are shipped
as seamen.

A GREAT EXPLOSION !
In these days of gunpowder, dynamite,
giant powder, and the like, tremendous ex-
plosions are no rarity, but the greatest ex-
ploslon of modern times is, without doubt,
that of the "old-sohool" idea that Con-
sumption is incurable. Thousands of lives
ha' -e been sacrificed to this mistaken po-
tion. Modern researoh has established tbo
fact that Consfimption is a sorofulous die-
eatte of the lungs, and there is one remedy
which will posit ively eradicate it from the
system -Dr Pieree's Golden Medical Die-
oopery. Of course, there were in the olden
times many wh o would haves pronounced
modern explosives instrgments of witch-
craft ; but there are, fortunately, fete to-
day who do not acknowledge that the
"Golden Medical Discovery" is the one
sovereign remedyjfor all scrofulons diseases,
and Consumption is one of them.
