A MAN WITH THREE THOU-
SAND WIVES.
Polygamy is practiced to an ex-
travagant degree In Ashantee.
The more wives a man has the
higher h is social importer.
Toe, number which a man in pri-
vate life may have is limited by
his ability to, purchase and sup-
port them; but the number which
a king may have is limited by
law -limited to the modest num-
ber of three thousand three hun-
dred and thirtythree, and it is said
that he usually does not exceed
that limit.
At any rate,
he must
have m
wives than any of his subjects,
his respectability will suffer.,
present king has actually the
lotted number, and he has six
hundred children.
All the king must do to get
a wife is to choose any female he
pleases, no matter how youn¢ she
may be. Girls are often chosen
when less than ten years old, and
in such cases they are left with
their mothers until of a mature
age, at which time they are taken
to join the rest of the three thsu-
sand three hundred and thirty-
three.
No man is ever allowed to see
any of the king's wives, and should
he even accidentally see one his
punishment is death. These
wives during the working season
attend to the king's plantations,
bat the rest of the time they live
at Coomassie,the Ashantee capital
where they occupy two long
streets.
When they go out for a walk in
a body, as is often the case, they
are preceded by a number of
eunuchs, who herald their coming
that all men may disappear and
avoid looking upon them. WLen
this is impossible they must fall
upon their faces to the ground.
If a white man happens to be
there, and does not understand
the law, the eunuchs turn his face

A PHILOSOPHER'S OPINION.
Voltaire said to a beautiful young.
lady with whom he was dining. "Your
rivals are the perfection of art; you are
the perfection of nature." This could
not have been said if the -young lady
was suffering from disease, and pain
had left its signs on the features.

THE GREAT BENEF1T
Which people in run down state of
health derive from Hood's Sarsaparilla
conclusively proves that this medicine
"makes the weak strong." It does
not act like a stimulant, imparting ficti-
tious strength, but Hood's Sarsaparilla
builds up in perfectly natural way all the
weakened parts, purifies the blood, and
assist to healthy action those impor-
tant organs,the kidneys and 'liver.

A REAP OF MONEY.
If a billion dollars were placed
on the ground edge to edge they
would extend to a distance of
23,974 miles, nearly all the way
• a
around the equator. Blk .. into c
three parts the line would form
both a solar and an equatorial
axis for the globe, with a spare
one left over in case of accident.
Divided into seven parts the line
would stretch from Washington
to Algiers, Berlin, Edinburgh,
Lima, Venice, Paris and Liver-
pool.
A billion dollars would give
100,000 young men enough cap-
ital to start in a profitable busi-
ness for themselves.
A bi:Iion dollars would buy
gowns for all the wotuen in the
civilized world,and shoes for 500,-
000,000 homesless children.
It would pay for a trip around
the world for 500,000 persons, and
buy enough clothing to last 10,-
000,000 men one ye^r. _
IN OLD OCEAN'S DEPTHS.
Now ;that the whole ocean is
mapped out for us, there is no
longero any romance in hidden
ocean depths. The Atlantic, we
are told, if drained, would bo a
vast plain,with a mountain range
in the middle running parallel
with our coast. Another range
crosses it from$Ndwfoandland to
Ireland, on the top of which lies
the submarine `cable. The ocean
eths is divided into three !great
basins, no onger "unfathomed
depths." The top of these sea
mountains are two miles below
a sailing ship\ the lbasin is almost
five miles. hese'monntains are
whitened for thousands of miles
by a tiny, creamy species of shell,
lying as thickly un their sides as
frost crystals on a snow bank.
The deepest parts are red in color,
heaped with volcanic. Through
the black, motionless water of
those abysses move gigantic
abnormal creatures never seen in
