MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKET
The prospects for a successful open-
ing of the live stock trade for 1891 have
brightened up somewhat since our last
review and shippers now expect that
the first shipments will make them
some money if the exports from the
States do not run too heavy in the mean
time, Cables are strong, quotations
showing another id advance, with hopes
of a still further gain. It would be well
for the uninitiated to bear in mind that
cattle shippers are the same as other
business men carrying on their business
principles, and that to follow this rule
they will ship their cattle, as cheaply as
possible, taking freight and insurance
rates and other incidental expenses in-
toacoount every time. The news comes
from the west that all the cattle in Ont-
ario have been picked up, and the quest-
ion naturally arises, are these cattle
purchased to be shipped by the purchas-
ers, or were they bought to be re -sold
to the American syndicate. At the east
end abattoir there were, 351:0 cattle, 300
calves and 75 sheep and lambs. There
was a good attendance of butchers, but
trade was slow and the offerings of cattle
inferior; a few sales were made at Sic
but 5 to 5}c was about the figure paid
for the best cattle prices being fully fc
below those of last week though oaten
sold at 4.} to 41c and lean steers and in-
ferior cattle from 31 to 4c. Some choice
bulls weighing about 1,400 lbs were held
over for 170 apiece. - Milkmen's strip•
pore brought from $30 to145 each. Good
calves sold well at 55 to fig: common at
12 to 15. Sheep and lambs sold well at
51 to 18, and /3.50 to Ili apiece.
TORONTO LIVE STOCK MARKET
Cattle—The duality of the cattle on
sale was very t..o 1. Trading was fairly
active, and with about 10 bads taken
for the eastern markets, the puns were.
pretty well i leaucd out at the close of
the day. Mr T. Crawford purchased
about 50 head of cattle for the British
niarket,for which he paid prices running;
from 41 to 5&c per Ib. Sheep and lambs
were purchased all offerings, although
the quality was not up to what they
would like it to be, and prices were
steady. Sheep and yearling lambs sold
at from 16 to $7,50 each and all were
taken. A few spring lambs were on sale
and sold at 14 each.

A CLIMAX • SALE
We have gone through our SI LK STOOK and made some heavy reductions in prices,
for we have a stock about five times larger than it should be, and we are going to clear out
our surplus in a very short time, if prices will do it. TWO WEEKS AGO we advertised
a sale of 500 yards of Silks at 30 and 35c; to -day we only have a few odd yards left ou i of
the entire lit, We offer this week
Another Lot of over 400 Yards,
at 50 and 60c., former price 90c., $1, and $1.25, We are losing money on every yard of these, but are deter-
mined to clear them out at any cost.
