Of subaqueous tunnels the most
famous is that under the Thames
at London, begun in 1807 and
finally completed for foot passeng-
ers in 1843 ; total length, 1,200
feet ; cost, $6,000 a lineal yard, or
total of $2,500,000.
The cast iron tunnel under the
St. Clair River, connecting Can-
ada with the United States, has
recently been completed. The
total length is 6,050 feet, of which
2,300 feet is under the river bed.
The outs:de diameter is 21 feet.
The Hoosao`tunnei project was
originally considered' as far back
as 1825. It was not until the
Stanley Brothers, of Montreal, in
1868, took the contract that ton-
struction was rapidly pushed.
Thep cons fileted their worts in De
cellioer, 1e74.
The Mont Crinis tunnel was a
tremendous engineering work, in
which air pumps were worked
by hydraulic power, although the
work was begun by hand labor in
1857. It was finished in 1871,the
total cost having been $15,000,-
000.
The Milian tucnels served as
aqueducts, the one to tap Lake
Albanno, begun 389 B. C., being
6,000 feet long. On the acque-
duct to cannect Lake Fucinus
with the River Liris, 30,000 men
were employed for ten years, the
work being finished A. 1). 52.

stating out, the Rev Griffin
said that the wanted everybody to
keep quiet. When some one left
the house he rirmarked that it
didn't make much difference for
one or two to go out,but that they
were going to hell as fast as they
did so. The congregation, he
said, was bothered because he
was going to preach on 'Prayer -
Meeting in Hell, when there were
so many here in Dallas who did
not pray. He quoted the I3ible
as authority that there were pray-
er -meetings in hell, saying that
Jonah prayed in hell when he was
in the stomach of the whale, and
that David cried that the powers
of hell compassed him around
about. The Rev Griffin said that
there were present last night
murderers and men who had taken
away other men's wives, and that
on this account they wouldn't
have to go far to find hell, and he
exhorted those that were in it
there to hold prayer for delivery
out of it.
The latter part of the Rev
Griffin's exhortation was chanted
rather than spoken, during which
he threw himself into many
striking attitudes. The congre-
gation would frequently join with
him in a chorus, using words .4f
his sernlon,—Dallas News.
You put water on the burning timbers,
not on the smoke. And if you have
catarrh you should attack the disease
in the blood, not in your nose. Remove
the impure cause, and [the local effect
subsides. To do this, take Hood's Sar-
saparillia, the great blood purifier,
which radically. and permanently cures
catarrh. It also strengthens the nerves.
Be sure to get only Hood's Sarsaparilla.
THE GRO«TH OF LONDON.
LIFE IS MISERY
To thousands of people who have the
taint of scrofula in their blood. The
agonies caused by the dreadful running
sores and other manifestations of this
disease are beyond description. There
is no other remedy equal to Hood's
Sarsaparilla for scrofula, salt rheum
and every form of disease. It is reason-
ably sure to benefit all who give it a
fair trial. Be sure to get Hood's.
(Dr. Albert Shaw.)
We are too frequently disposed
to think of the rapid growth of
our American cities as merely in-
cidental to the settlement of a new
country, and to European cities as
old and stationary. It is true
that their, nuclei are ancient, but
so f'ar as the greater part of their
built up area is concerned they
are almost or quite as ne* as the
American cities. They, like our
own population centres, have
grown unprecedently in recent
decades as the result of modern
transportation and industrial
systems. Thus London to -day is
five times as large as it was
at the opening of the present,
century. From 900,000 at that
time. the popuaetion of London
grew to 1,500,000 in 1830; and by
1855 it bad increased to 2,500,000.
Since 1855 it has more than
doubled.
The present sovereign has wit-
nessed a gain of two hundred per
cent. or more since she began to
reign. • There are three or four
dwelling houses now for every
one that was visible at the date of
her coronation. In the past forty
years from 2 000 to 2 500 miles of
new streets have been formed in
London. Who, studying the
growth of foreign cities can doubt
the continued growth of our owri.
London is not an exception. All
the other great towns of England
have grown up as if by magic
within this century.
The same statement applies to
those of the Continent, Paris is
five times as large as it was in
the year 1800: Berlin has grown
much more rapidly than Paris ;
Vienna has expanded marvelous-
ly since 1840. This is a digros-
t3ion; but I shall continue it enough
further to remark that anexamin-
ation of the causes which have
built up these European centers
easily justifies the judgment that
none of our twenty leading Am-
ei:ican cities bas begun to ap-
proach its maximum size.
THAT LITTLE TICKLING
In your throat, which makes you cough
once in a while and keeps yon constant-
ly clearing your throat, arises from
catarrh, and as catarrh is a constitution-
al disease the ordinary cough medicines
all fail to bit the spot. What yon need
is a constitutional remedy like Hood's
Sarsaparilla. Many people, who have
taken this medicine for scrofula, dys-
pepsia, loss of appetite, and other
troubles, have been surprised that it
should cure this troublesome cough.
But to know the actual cause of the
coslgh is to solve the mystery. Many
cases of •ensumption can be traced
back to the neglect of some such slight
affection as this. Consumption can be
controlled in its early stages, and the
effect of Hood's Sarsaparilla in purify-
ing the blood, building up the general
health, and expelling the scrofulous
taint which is the cause of catarrh and
consumption, has restored to perfect
health many persons on whom this
dreaded disease seemed to have a fir.
hold.

'It is not generally known,'said
Mr C. B. Worth, of H. B. Claflin
K,„Co., a few days ago, 'that some
fo the highest salaries are paid in
our business. We are often ac-
cused of paying starvation wages
to our clerks by people who never
look at the expenses entailed in
running an establishment. Take
the buyers, for instance. There
are firms in this city who pay
men from $10,000 to $30,000 a
year for simply being able to tell
three-quarters of a year in ad-
vance what the fashion is going
to be. One gentleman, who buys
for a wholesaleman, house on
Broadway, is said to earn $50,000
a year.
'Dry goods houses are noted
for paying low wages to their
clerks, because the supply of
clerks is 50 abundant. In some
of the smaller stores the pay runs
as low -as $3 a week. But the
buyer on whose judgment the sale
of next year's fabrics depends gets
half as much as the President of
the United States. The smallest,
and some of the largest, salaries
are paid in the dry goods busi-
ness,'
'How does the buyer for the
hous listingnish in advance what
the fashion for next year is to
be ?'
'Ah, that is where it requires a
wide awake man. Ile must watch
growing tendencies among the
firm's richest and. most fashion-
able customers at home and
abroad. Whatever has become
popular among them will snake
•its wayi among the masses, and
this tide the house must catch and
swim along with.
'In Europe textile manufactur-
ers make few goods except on or-
ders. The buyer for a firm roust
decide what bis house can sell
next season, and order his sup-
plies of cloth made in advance.
A serious mistake might be suffi-
cient to bankrupt the firm, by
leaving them with a stock on
hand of unsalable goods, the pat-
terns not being to the liking of
the firm's customers. So you can
easily see why a skillful buyerean
command his own price.'
'How do you select a man for
such a position ?'
'Nothine. less than a kind of in-
tuition is demanded for such a
place. In addition, the buyer
must estimate what amount his
employer can sell of a given style
of goods. If be overstocks the
firm, then they are left with old-
fashioned articles on hand which
they must resort to the 'bargain -
counter' devices to get rid of at a
severe loss.'—New York Star.
