Catarrh In the head • Is a constitutional Disease, and requires A constitutional remedy Like Hood's Sarsaparilla, Which purifies the blood, Makes the weak strong, Restores health Try it now. A small boy of our acquain- tance admires his clergyman. He says : 'I would like to be a minister, if I could be a nice min- ister like him. If I can't be that, I should like tie a street cur conductor. 'A little boy, while playing, fell down the steps and hurt himself severely. His mother scolded him for his carelessness, and he sobbed out: 'Mamma, please don't scold me till I get done hurting.' Among other extraordinary an- atomies discovered by a hopeful of four and a half,is one which he named in telling of the sad chas- tisement inflicted on a disobedient doll : 'Papa,Dittie was so naughty to -day that I had to 'pank her on the back of her tommie l' Conversation between a trave- ler and a lad of six or seven :. 'Your grandfather there seems very old. Do you know what his age is ?"No, sur; I couldn't ex actly say, sir, but I'm sure he can't be very young. He's always been about the house as long as I can remember.' She declined for two or three nights to say her prayers. One night her papa covered his face with his hands, and said : 'It makes papa feel sick to think Margaret won't say her prayers.' 'Papa feel sick ?"Yes, dear.' 'Papa better take Casser (castor) oil.The subject of prayer was no longer discussed that night. A little Buffalo girl was not feeding well, and her parents sug- gested that she might be about to have chicken-pox,then prevalent, Sho went to bed laughing at the idea, but errly next morning went into her parents' room, looking very serious, and said : 'Yes,it is chicken -pox, papa. THE MAIN POINT. A boy, particularly when he is small, is not given to sophistry. He has a charmingly frank way of disentangling a subject from quips and quibbles and coming di- rectly to the main point. A small buy had a dog that was rough, as Most small boys,' dogs are, and a young girl next door had a kitten sly as all cats are. One day the boy come nonchalantly into the girl's presence, and, after some Cl' desultory conversation, he said : 'You know my dog Berea and your cat !:ailing ?' 'Yes.' • 'Well, my dog bad a piece of meat, an he thought your cat was a -going to take it away from him.' 'Thought 1' exclaimed • the wise little girl. Senator Stewart, of Nevada, ccasionally relapses into remin- isces One of the best slrories 4_0116.4 of the arrival of the first womann"the mining camp. The boys had toiled with pan, rind rocker at Washoe for three years without so much as a glimpse of a sun -bonnet. Late of an after- noon a shout was heard. The cry was taken up and repeated until it rang from end to end of the gulches: "Petticoats l" "Patti• coats l" Down went the picks and shovels. The red-shirted miners swarmed the hillsides. An emi- grant wagon, "all the way from Pike,' was slowly moving along to a ramping place. A lone "Pike" sat on the spat in front a lucky miner who had raised the shout told how be had seen a live woman sitting beside a man when the wagon first hove in sight, Bat as soon as he gave notice by the warning cry she had dodged back out of sight beneath the canvas cover. ].'lied with questions by the less fortunate, the miner described in glowing detail how tho woman was dressed and what she looked like. That evening, while the slices of pork were sizzling and the coffee pots were bubbling, the miners discussed the great event. The more they talked the more they felt that they must see a woman. Somebody proposed a purse and a •visit to the emigrant's camp. One after another chipped in. There was $3,000 in gold dust when the last contribution was turned in. Then forming in line, looking very solemn, just as they did when they marched in to see "The Luck of the Roaring Camp," these miners started for the wagon of the Missourian. By a unanimious vote "Bill" Stewart had been selected for spokesman. He walked at the head of the pro- cession and carried the bag of gold dust. As the eoleilmn approached within sight of the little camp the leaders saw little flutter ofdrapery at the front of an improvised tent. Then the flap was hastily drawn and as the miners approached they saw only the man of the out fit, and he gazed rather apprehen- sively at the array. A big ring was formed; Stewart advanced to the center. He ex- plained to the traveller that the boys meant no harm to him or his. But it had been three years since some of them had seen a woman. In fact until the arrival that afternoon the gulches of Washoe had never been honored with the presence of petticoats. The boys had deemed the occasion worthy of recognition. They had made up, not exactly a jack pot, but a purse, which he was com- missioned to present to the lady. The Missourian listened. As the little speech neared the climax he grinned. When Stewart held up the buckskin bagthe emigrant's eyes grew big. He turned and started with alacrity for the tent. "Sally, he sai ,"come and show your self. The boys don't mean to hurt ye. They have got somethin fur ye. Leading the frigtrtened woman by the hand, the Missourian re- turned to whore Stewart was standing. Stewart handed over the buckskin bag with bilmost elaborate bow. The woman took it, made an aR kward "acknow- ledgement, and scooted for the tent. As she disappeared there wont up a shout which -made the Coyotes hunt their holds for miles around. TlJI; IMPERATIVE DUTY. Tne duty of Christians is to make every possible effort to prerch the Gospel to all the na- tions whether they feel interested to the matter or not, whether they naturally sympathize with the heathen or not, but just be- cause God sympathizes with the dishonor done to his Son in un - evangelized lands, and commands all his children to do so too, seeing. that their interests and Christ's are identical. Eteruity alone will reveal the awful havoc wrought by the restless energy of Satan, while Christians are leisurely putting off obeying until they feel inclined to obey, and are leisurely attending missionary meetings on the chance of hearing some decription or anecdote about the sufferings of the heathen which will move them more than God's appeal to them to publish the work of Jesus Christ where Christ isnot already named. How little these awful realities move us; how often the missionary meeting is marked by unseemly levity ; or how often a spirit of cornplace. t mutual ad- miration manifests itself, which is perfectly sickening when we reflect that nine out of every ten horn into the world pass into the next world without knowing of anything that can turn them from the power of Satan unto Ge -d? ALL MEN. A teacher said the other day, •Henry Stover is the only boy in tiehool I can trust when my back is turned.' Wasn't that a good word for Henry ? eM A mother paid once, 'I can leave any letter I write open on my desk, and if I am called away, • no matter how long, I am certain • Nellie will never try to read a word of it.' These things couldn't be said of every boy and girl. These child- ren are honest. They do right not only when others are looking at them, but always,r•emember•ing that God's eye is upon them. Tbeydo right because t is right. • This is what we should all and al- ways do—live as in God's pre Bence, and do what will please him. C. C. 'Don't touch the eat; go and catch Johnny for me.' To avoid catching cold, many plans have been suggested. Probably if one never went away or did anything out • of the usual routine of life, they would he free from the many ailments that flesh is heir •to, but this is not a satis- feotdry solution of the question.
