With loss than a month to live John Reginald Bircball ,is spend- ing the greater part of his time in writing an autobiography. Ile calculates it will take about a hundred printed pages, book form, and estimates the manuscript to be worth $2,000. Several papers are negotiating for the work, but it is not probable that any pub- lisher would be foolish enough to pay $2,000 for it. The proceeds will be left to his widow. Tho New York Police Gazette, World, Sun, Toronto Mail, and other pa- pers are negotiating with the pris000r for the history of his life, but no bargain haabeen closed yet. Bircball continues to receive a very heavy mail. About forty copies of "The Lord's Dealings with the convict, Daniel Mane," (who was hanged in Kingston penitentiary several years ago) have been sent him with many marked passages. A lady in Parkhill has sent him a book en- titled "A life in a Look," with the request that Birchall shall write her after he has read it. Other religious matter is received al- most every mail, but the prisoner does not take much interest :n this kind of literature. He pre- fers to read English sporting pa- pers.—Woodstock Standard. - Frank Wilkinson, grain buyer at Hamilton, says: "I used several medi- cines and found no relief until 1 tried Wilson's Compound Syrup, Wild Cherry." Less than one bottle cured' him of a long standing and painful cough, with tightness of chest and short GEMS OF THOUGHT. Mend thyself rather than the world. Love rules kingdom without a sword. Of late, she has been sit- ting up at nights reading the Bible. On Saturday she became a raving maniac. Left alone in the house she conrtructed an altar and prepared to sacrifice her six - months -old son. She stripped the child, placed it on .the altar, and while reaching for the butcher knife, relatives broke in and she was overpowered. She demanded that she be allowed to proceed, claiming the Lord had command- ed her, and declared she wanted to wash her hands in the b'oed of the Lamb. Although Bircball has one regular and one occasional, religious attend- ant, he shows no signs of conversion. He listens to their exhortations quietly, agrees with all they say, and the matter ends there. Perhaps when he comes closer to Cet:h he may show some signs of conversion, but now, unlike The average murder- , he does not profess to expect to soar from the foot of the gallows to the throne of grace without let or hindrance. A young professor of medicine, Knncharsky by name, closed a lecture at St. Petersburg a few days ago on poisonous acids, to a class in the laboratory of the uni- versity, by pouring into a glass a few drops of' ono of the poisons, saying, as he drank them, "In two minutes you are going to see a man die before your eyes; I bid you farewell." The students rushed up and tried to administer an antidote, but it was powerless. At the expiration of the time he had fixed he was a corpse. There is groat excitement in St. Peters- burg over this tragic incident. It is generally believed the professor had gone suddenly mad, for no motive for the deed can be assign- ed. He r_ext set fire to his new house, and in half an hour the house was levelled with the ground. The flames seemed to gond him on to further destruction. Building a rude fence about the stacks, be drove his stock into the enclosure, and again applied the fire -brand.
