The SS. Etruia, which arrived at New
York on Saturday, was just in time to
save two importers $45,000 in duties on
her cargo. The captain reached the cus-

and was the hero of the hour.

the money was not sufficient for the pace
at which he wished to live.

Minister's sons, says the Canada
:Presbyterian, came to the front in the
great trial at Woodstock. Mr Osler is
a son of the Rev. Canon Osler, formerly
of Dundas. Mr Blackstock is the son
of a retired Methodist minister(former-
ly of Clinton) Mr Hellmuth is a son of
the well-known Episcopal divine of that
name, while Birchall is also an Episco-
pal clergyman's son. The old slander
that minister's sons never amount to
anything, is not true of Ontario. It
never was true anywhere.
A short time ago, Wm. R.. Lazenby,
of Columbus, Ohio Secretary of the
Governing Board of the State Univer-
sity Experiment Station, took a trip
through the Provine of Ontario. 'Among
other things he writes as follows to the
Country Gentleman: -"I was curious
1;r know how the more intelligent
farmers of Canada regarded the existing
laws of trade, or what may be called
the 'custpms line,' which separates the
two great countries of this continent.
I was pleased to learn that, as a rule,
they were in favor of reciprocity, with
the -United States. They can scarcely
fail to see that a complete freedom of
commerce, such as exists between the
States of the Union and the Provinces
of the Dominion, would be an advant-
age to both countries. The present
trade barriers is severely felt by those
who live near the border, and they are
particularly anxious for an unrestrict-
ed reciprocity, so that all the advan-
tages of a free exchange of produce
may fall within their grasp."

MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKET
We can report no change for the bet•
ter in the cattle trade this week, pri-
vate cables showing moat unsatisfac-
tory results, Mr Robert Bickerlike's
cable from Liverpool said:—Averaged'
mixed shipment, Sad, best steers and
maiden heifers 6d, sheep 5ad to 7d.
At London trade was reported as bad,-
The sales of sheep were unfavorable,
one large lot selling at `tae net. The
Scotch markets are going from bad to
worse. A private cable from Glasgow
says:—English .and Irish stores very
plentiful: leas demand therefore for
Canadian stores. Our markets show
no inducement for - speculation. Ad-
vise caution as there are no prospects
for trade improving. In the face of
all these bad reports, however, cattle
continue to- go forward freely, the
shipments for the week being 4,330
cattle and 1,573 sheep. These reports
are bad, but they do not alarm the
cattle shippers. They have been re-
ceiving similar news all season, and
have now become hardened. The re-
ceipts over the two [railways for the
past five months aggregate 105,000,
an increase of about 18 per cent. over
the same period last year. There has
been little or no trading on spot for
export stock, and it is an admitted
fact among shippers that Toronto is
now the market for export stock. The

The Montreal Trade Bulletin, discus-
ing the new trade situation, says:—
"In regard to the shipment of eggs to
England, there is no chance at present
of seeking a profitable market in that
direction. Should prices here recede,
however, later on England may take a
portion of our surplus production."
That is to say, if Canadians will sell
their eggs cheap enough to complete
with the pauper herbs of Belgium,
France and Gernitany,a market will be
found for Canadian eggs in Great
Britain. No one has ever denied this,
but farmers rttust be prepated to accept
a mucdbwer price for their eggs than
they Kaye been receiving or would re-
ceive if complete reciprocity with the
States were established.

The 'Oxford Sheriff has received del
finite instructions from Mr. Christies,
inspector of prisons, with regard to the
case of Birchen, and the new regulations
are now in force. According tothese the
arrangements by which Birchall's meal,
have been supplied from a hotel will be
discontinued. It is not intended, how-
ever, to limit him to jail fare, but the
jailer is instructed to purchase the food
himself and superintend its cooking
and preparation. This precaution was
taken presumably to prevent any possi-
bility of poison being introduced into
his meals. He will not be allowed the
use of a knife of any kind, or anything
else with which he might do bodily harm
to his attendants or himself. His steel
pen and a needle were therefore. taken
from him Tuesday morning, and here-
after Ile will write with a pencil or
quill. The ntmost viligance on the
part of the guards is enjoined, and any
laxity of duty is to be punished by in-
stant dismissal. No one is to be allow-
ed to see him except the jail surgeon
and his spiritnal adviser unless on the
order of the Sheriff. It is advised that
the visits of his wife be restricted t -i
once a month, and the husband and
wife are not to be allowed to approach
each other close enough to enable him

CAROBS IN INDIA
We aro Sole Agents for Ram Lal's Pure Indian Teas. Wo bog to ask
you to give them a trial, because they aro absolutely pure; are grown
and prepared on the estate by the most skilled labor and improved
machinery that money con buy, whereas China Teas aro picked and
carried by natives long distances before being made ready for the
market. Ram Lal's is a blend of Three Teas grown and prepared
especially for this brand. Will always be the same flavor, to -day to
ten years hence. 'Tis cheap ; only Fifty Cents for a pound package
which will go as far as two pounds of China or Japan Teas.
