There he met Catharine Collins, a farmer's daughter noted for her beauty. Patanaude fell instantly in love witb her and wis so devoted in his attentions in his attentions as to totally neg- lect his profession, he followed the girl like a dog. Again and again be protested his love, only . to be scornfully refused. As us- ual, the girl loved another, but this did not deter the young man, and one day, when he was implor- ing her "to give him her heart," she replied that she would some time, and when he asked the time 7eshesaid • "When she was dead." Dr Patanaude said "do you mean its" and she laughingly answered, ay s.» East week Miss Collins was taken suddenly ill from pneu- monia. Dr Patanaude attended her and tried to save her life, but she died and was buried in the parish churchyard. The next night the sexton, see- ing the grave had been disturbed, made an investigation and found the body was- gone. The entire country embarked in a search and the corpse was found in tbe woods, but tho heart was missing. A countryman arrested on sus- picion confessed having helped Dr Patanaude to rob the grave.' The body was taken to his office and something cut out, which was placed in a bottle of water (supposed to he alcohol) and bot- tled up. The docter got wind of the con- fession and fled to Canada, taking his bottle with hint. It is sup - t posed that be had claimed bis due, the dead girl's heart. It is sup- posed he has lost his mind over his wild infatuation. The body was returned and a reward offered for Patanaude's arrest or the re- covery of the heart. Happily, Canadian justice. ,s pretty vigorous and Beuwell will be legally avenged. A special from Loudon says:— Birchall's conviction is the most popular topic of conversation. Birchall was always a rake. Af- ter sacrificing his patrimony he came to London, fell in with a gang of swindlers who swarm in this city, and exist by sending the worthless [sons of impoverished families to America. The Eng- lish papers dare not expose these men for fear of the libel law. aI care not what you publish in America about.' Butius if one word be republished in England we will sue the paper which re- publishes it for libel. Birchall's friends stood by him during his trial. Old College chums sent him money, and a sister near Liver- pool impoverished herself to save her brother. MrsBirehall's rela- tions also furnished assistance A brother of Birchall's, a clergy- man in uLiverpool suburb,islheart- broken because of the family dis- grace. A telegram from London, Eng, says :—Probably no trial of modern times, certainly none occurring in a distant colony, has excited the interest that has been aroused throughout the length and breadth of the British Isles by the proceedings of the past week at Woodstock, in the Birchall case. I1' Mrs Birchall leases Wood stock before the execution, there will be but one interview between her and her doomed husband. How this interview will be man- aged has already.beenarranged. It will take place in the presence of a turnkey, and the parties may talk, but they cannot allowed to embrace each other. The authorities evidently fear that the prisoner may attempt suicide by some means. (New York Commercial Daily Bulletin/ The celerity of British methods in judicial proceedings might'well he imitated here. In the Birchall case in Canada, the jury was se- cured in less than an hour, out of a panel drawn from a people greatly prejudiced against him. The trial was of unusual length for Canada, some six days, and was closed by a verdict of guilty and the sentence of the prisoner. A. murder case of startling inter- est is now in progress in New York. Five or six days were ex- hausted in getting a jury, and at last specimens of tha requisite monumental ignorance were found and the examination of witnesses began Thursday. A TIRED MOTHER'S SUICIDE Ml's Halford, who was a bright and respectable matron, torty-five years of age, was deserted by her husband several months ago. She had three children—a girl, Lizzie, aged nineteen years and two boys. Charles, the older, a ,„youth of seventeen years, was em- ployed as a messenger. With needlework and other light occu- pations the deserted wife manag- ed to support herself and family in their humble appartments. She was well liked by her neigh- bors, and they speak of her as a good woman and affectionate mother. While at the breakfast table in their appartments on the third floor one morning the two boys be- came involved in a quarrel about 20 cents, which George, the young- est, claimed. Losing their tem- pers they threatened to go out- side and fight it out. Mrs Halford became nervous and excited and reproved them for the display of passion, As her motherly reproof did not have the desired effect of - settling the strife the distracted mother arose from the table, and, going over to the mantle piece, took up a box of poison. She was about to swallow the contents when the older boy sprang to her side and duetted the poison from her hand. Both boys thea became quiet, and the storm which had so tragi- cally interrupted the breakfast appeared to have past over. As the mother subsequently left the room and went into the kitchen she shed tears and ex- claimed :—"If yiu boys continue to quarrel Il will kill myself." Becominglalarmed and penitent in view of their mothers sorrow, which their conduct, hadtprovokeat, the brothers, promising notgto have any more words, left the house. Fearing, however, that they might tight when they got out- side, the anxious mother ti)Ilowed them. She saw them go away inldifterent directions and re enter- ed the house. Soon after Mrs Raiford put on her bonnet and shawl, and visited a drug store on Flatbush avenue. There she purchased five cents' worth of Carbolic acid and re- turned to her home. About an hour later MrslEason, an occapant Of the saaie house, called to pay ai visit to Mrs Hal- ford, and round her lying in a dy- ing condition on the sofa. Beside the woman was the empty phial from which she hail drank the poison. She died al i('W minutes later. ES RGANS AND L&NOS SEVEN QUEsT10NS 1. Do you purpose buying an Organ or Piano? 2.
