' 11 A 1,1 : MONTREAL LIVE STOCK MARKET The end has time, The cattle ship- pers have at last awakened to the fact that this has been a moat disastrous year for them, and all the large shippers but four have gracefully retired from the arena for the time being. We have repeatedly expressed surprise that cattle should be shipped to the other side in the face of such disastrous results, but the shippers kept on hoping without hope. No improt'ement has - made its appearacce and the shippers have gen- erally come to the conclusion that they might as well retire now of their own accord as do so later in the season un- der the force of necessity. The cause of all this is not far to seek. Flushed by success last year shippers started in with the intention of becorning million- aires at once. The fat cattle trade was overdone in London and Livevpool, and there shippers turned their attention to the stocker' trade with even worse re- sults, ape -of the four' large shippers who is still "bucking the tiger' having expressed his intention of not shipping another hoof to Glasgow this season. In addition to this there have been large offerings of provincial stock on the Bri- tish markets and a generally bad trade. No business of importance was tran- sacted in a shipping way during the week, and the market for butchers' stork was easy under lame offerings with a slcw demand, owing to inferior 'quality. Sheep in fair demand and hogs steady, closing at Sc advance at 135.50 to $5,M5 per cwt. Export cattle were quoted at 4!, to 41c ; good butchers 31 to 4c; medium, :31 to 3;c: culls, 2 to 2;c; sheep, 3j to 4V, and calves, 5 to f;!,c each, BORN.
