BRITISH CATTLE MARKETS.
Liverpool.—The market this week is
rather improved, owing to lighter sup-
plies. In fact first stock is selling bet-
ter than a week ago. choice beeves being
quoted at 13c per lb, which is an ad-
vance of io per Ib from a week ago
There were offered at the Stanley mar-
ket 350 Canadian cattle, while a week
ago there were 1,275 head on psi This
will probably explain the aavft>zuu, for
the general condition of trade in the
Old Country does not appear to have
improved. No sheep were offered and
prices remain nominally the same.
The following were quotations, being
calculated at 24.80 to the £ (sinking the
offal):
Finest steers $0 13 to $0 00
Good to choice 0 12i 0 00
Poor to medium 0 111 0 00
Inferior and bulls 0 08i 0 10
Best sheep 0 00 0 14
Secondary 0 12 0 13
Merinos 0 111 012i
Inferior and rams 0 09 010i
MONTREAL LIVE - STOCK
MARKET
At the west end market, Point St.
Charles, business was small towing to
the limited supply of butchers' cattle,
and not over three carloads changed
hands, being purchased by speculators
and taken to the east end. No export
stock was offered. Hoge were quiet,
and only a few changed hands at about
25.50. During the first part of the past
week there was an oversupply of but-
chers' cattle, and a consequent weak
market, but towards the close a better
trade was done, the receipts being
smaller. Sheep were in good demand,
and there was a slight advance in hogs
owing to the falling off in the receipts.
We quote as follows: Good butchers', 4
to 4}c; medium, 3,} to 31c, culls, 2i to
3fc; sheep, 31 to 4fc; hogs 5} to 54c,and
calves, 6 to Sic. The receipts sinoe
Saturday were 626 cattle, 243 sheep and
hogs. At the east end abattoir the sup-
ply of cattle was very small, only about
300 head being on offer. Butchers were
present in large numbers and appeared
to want cattle, while there was a keen
competition from shippers' agents, who
bought up everything suitable offering.
Good cattle were scarce and prices on
them were a half higher than a week
ago. One shipper's agent bought about
30 stockers averaging 1;000 lbs at 310
per ib, but as high as 4ic was paid for
the best butchers' stockers on offer.
The few export. sheep changed hands at
4c, and lambs sold from $2,50 to $3.50
apiece, all the offerings of both being
sold at the close.
