A STORY OF THE DAY.
It was on or about this day in Au-
gust, 1588, that Queen Elizabeth
delivered her famous harangue to
the 20,000 soldiers in camp in
Tilbury fort. The whole country
was at that time iu a fever of ex-
citement over rumors that the
formidable Spanish armada was
was about to enter the Thames
and begin its assault upon the
nation. Both sides of floe river
were Hastily fortified and troops
summoned. After, having review-
ed the soldiers in London, Eliza-
beth determined to visit those at
Tilbury fort. She rode on a war -
charger, wore armor, and carried
a marshal's truncheon in her hand
Her appearance:created great en-
thusiasm among the troops; and
their cheers no doubt helped to
inspire her with eloquence. All
are familiar with the speech, in
which the following ringing pas-
sages occur : 'I have always so
behaved myself that!under God,
I have placed my ehiefest
strength and safeguard in the
loyal hearts and good m ill of my
subjects, and therefore I have
come among you at this time,
not as for my recreation and sport
but being resolved in the midst
and heat of the battle to live or
die among you all ; to lay down
for my God, my kingdom, my
people, my honor and ;my blood,
even in the dust. I know that I
have but the body of a weak and
feeble woman, hut I bave the
heart of a king, and of a king of
England, too, and think foul scorn
that Parma or Spain or any prince
of Europe should dare to invade
the borders of my realm,' The
speech completely won the hearts
of the soldiers, and had the ar-
mada appeared they would un-
doubtedly have proved themselves
worthy of their heroic queen.

SLEEPING WITH BABY.
The free from care and ease
taking old batchelor who, in his
momentary lapse of wisdom, con-
templates matrimony should at
the same time reflect on the re-
mote but contingent possibility of
his having to sometime sleep with
a baby should he marry. Years
of experience of martyrdom of
this kind make me feel it to be
aduty to set forth the m it e' -y worst cases. Because others have failed is no reason for not now receiving a cure. Send at
arising from a contingency of once fora treatise and a Free Bottle of my Infallible Remedy. Give Express and
Post Office. It costs you nothing for a trial, and it will cure you. Address :—H. B. ROOT,

The baby, if he happens to be a
lusty little fellow of eight or ten
months, will decline to stay cov-
ered and will also decline to al-
low you to keep yourself covered.
He will also insist on lying "cross
w ise," "cat -a --Cornered," "bias,"
or in any other position but that
which will give you a few minutes
sleep. His infantile needs will
begin fo manifest themselves at
about 1 o'clock in the morning, at
which witching hour yon will go
blundering around in the dark for
adrink of water. He will howl
steadily and cheerily from 2 un-
til 3 o'clock, and will kick you
furiously between the shoulder
blades with every howl. It will
not be of any use for you to pat
him tenderly and coo out 'there
there.' He is right there and
knows it and intends that you
shall know.

that amiable desire to the utmost.
It is of no use to add to your
Judgment Day list of enormities
by swearing. And if your wife
has been calmly passive through
it all, she will develop an amazing
degree of spirit if you dare lay
the weight of your finger in anger
on that 'poor, dear. little innocent
darling sweatness.'
He will squirm all night as
though he were first cousin to an
angle worn. Ho will journey
around all over the bed, both un-
der and on top of the coverings.
You are no sooner asleep than one
of his moist little heels is planted
firmly on your nose or in your
mouth, and, later on, with child-
ed'e-ecorn--o'F -decency and de-
corum, he will sit astride your
neck and grow green and purple
with rage when gently made to
sit. elsewhere. Should he fall
out of bed and yell loud enough to
be heard all over your ward, your
wife will say she firmly believes

that you are not fit to be a father

PROHIBITION IN PRACTICE.
Here is a story of how the
town of Evanston Illinois, was
built up—an Aladdin's castle of
she present day—by the magic
lamp, Prohibition. We take the
story from the Voi;e, and every-
one will do well to read it.
Thirty and odd years ago, the
Legislature of Illinois chartered
the North Western University,
adding to its educational powers
the command that intoxicating
liquors should never be sold as a
beverage within four miles of the
seat of said school. Its Methodist
managers stuck its home stake
here, twelve miles northward on
from Chicago on the border of
Lake Michigan; and its infant
planting became the nucleus of
village settlement named Evan•
ston. Its facilities for training
boys drew good people, and its
facilities for preventing boy's from
becoming criminal rogues also
drew. At that time local option
was not the law of the State, and
Prohibition was not possible to
the will even of the majority of
a town. Hence the Prohibitive
fence around this spot made it so
rare a city of refuge to careful par-
ents.
It grew in size and kept its
amiable quality. During a de-
cade no ,open attempt, says the
'oldest inhabitant,' was made to
put liquors on sale here. but
twenty years ago, a Chicago li-
quor factory looked upon this as
untilled soil, and sent out its far-
mer to gather figs of thistles. But
he got pricked to death. He was
ejected by lower court judgment,
took his grief to the Supreme
Court, and returned broken, that
court fully sustaining the charter
of the University as Prohibition
that did prohibit. Since that
date it has not been questioned in
any court. Nor has sin made
any later effort to set up open
shop in the village of Evanston,
though nine years ago it sought to
lead men into temptation several
miles across lots near a Catholic
settlemert. The distance being
in dispute, the Rev Dr Briggs,
then pastor of the Methodist
churc1T, carried one end of the
chain that measured of that four
mile Isw. The saloon being found
on sacred soil, it straddled its
cast: and rode beyond the line,
lest impromptu justice should
take the tongs to it.
The population is 9,500, of
which 6,000 are in Evanston
village proper. In health, morals
money and intelligence, the aver•
age condition of the people is un-
usually high. The University
has become an institution of two
million dollars, costly structures,
a thousand students, and forty
accomplished instuctors, and has
the confidence ofva wide circuit,
graduating most of its young men
and women religious as well as
learned.
The burial records of the town-
ship shows the decease in 18 83
to have been only 186,or less than
15 deaths per annum in 1,000 in-
habitants. This, too, though the
town contains an exceptional
number of retired elderly people.
The supervisor's reports shows
a smaller per capita expenditure
for the support of paupers than in
any other townwithinCook county
in some cases only one-half. For
the six months just expired under
tho present supervisor, food had
been furnished to 18 families at a
cost of $186; and the official esti-
mate for the year $1,100. For
the six suburbs barley four police-
men have been found necessary
and their duties aro very Tight,
chiefly that of looking after
tramps seeking the victuals and
Clothes of a lobe? people. There

MFS Anna Beatty, who lived
with her family at Bayview, near
Milwaukee, died a most, horrible
death on Wednesday. Two weeks
ago a fly got into one of her nos-
trils, and it was some time before
she was able to remove it, and
when she did an itching sensation
remained,and her nose and throat
began to swell. A week ago Sun-
day aphysician was called. Since
that time Mrs Beatty had been
suffering in a manner almost in-
describable, and the doctors say a
similar case is unknown to medi-
cal science. It is stated that soon
after she was sick maggots were
discovered in her nose and throat,
and for several days Mrs Beatty
was unable to swallow food. She
was eaten up by maggots.IA post-
mortem showed that the partition
of her nose was gone, a hole had
been eaten through the roof of the
mouth, the soft palate had disap-
peared, and the throat was fright-
fully eaten.
An application was received by
the Deputy Minister of Railways
and Canals on Saturday for per-
mission to allow an excursion
steamer to pass through the I
chine canal (Sunday). The o-
1uellt was refused.
