'Very, well, Jakey,' I said, 'you

' Jakey Seifert.'
' He came quickly forward, and
stepped upon the stage, a comical
picture of overgrown boyhood and
childish excitement. His fat body
clad in a pink calico waist, and
around his neck was a huge em-
broidered white collar, such as us-
ed to be worn by our great -great -
mothers. His face was shiny as
soap and water could make it.
After a jerky little bow, Jakey
commenced : '
'Mary had von leedle lamb.'
-Then be stopped short and be-
gan twitching at his trousers leg
with the thumb and forefinger of
either hand.
'Mary had von leedle lamb.'
He stopped again and fell to
twisting on one ieg. His lips
moved rapidly, but no sound came
from them. Some of the other
boys began to laugh. Then Jakey
cried out.
'You need not geegle like dot !

A RELIGION OF
Christianity is a religion of
facts. They are not appendages
—ornaments, so to speak, about
the neck of a king, with regard to
which it matters not whether they
are worn or discarded. Miracles
are more than proofs : they are
constituent elements of revelation
which unveils not only the mercy
and tenderness,but also the power
of God, and His sovereignty of
nature. Take away the miracles,
and there is an inexplicable chasm
and inconsistency in these records
which it would require a vast
amount of wit and ingenuity to
explain. Apostles and prophets
were inspired of God to set forth
the contents of divine revelation ;
and even the historical books
composed by them are permeated
with the ideas drawn from a sup-
ernatural source. The writings
composed by pupils or attendants
of the Apostles partake of the
same character and are penetrat-
ed with the perceptions that flow-
ed fromltho authoritative teachers
near whom they stood. Misinter-
pretations of the essential nature
of the Gospel were precluded by
the agency of the Spirit who was
to throw light on the s.yings of
Christ, and on the events the
meaning of which was at first so
dark to the minds of the disciples.
but was to become clear in the
rettempect. All this is a part it,
the common faith of Christians.
