FEED TIIE COW.
Bran and grain are cheap as
well as milk. Store them in the
cow now, that she may be in good
shape to produce milk when better
prices rule—we don't mean fat her,
but grass alone, and such watery
grass as some parts of the country
aro producing this season, is very
poor stuff to build up the system
of a cow that is a good milker.
Give some bran or grain,or both,
to help out—we feed bran and a
Little cornmeal each day.
THE MANURE HEAP.
Whenever manure is handled it
is so much added to the cost;
hence any labor required in pre-
paring the food, or reducing the
litter before adding it to the heap,
is saved when the manure is to be
handled. The most disagreeable
work on the farnt is the handling
of manure that is full of cornstalks
straw and other long litter.
Manure should be decomposed,and
the finer the material that is ad-
ded to it the quicker its reduction
by decomposition.
RIGHT KIND OF FOOL.
Economy in feeding does not
refer to reducing the food requir-
ed, but to regulate it in quality
that nothing may be wasted.
Much of the food given is simply
converted into manure. It does
not pay to feed woody fibre and
water when more nutritions mat-
erial is required in order to pro-
duce the salable product from an
animal.

THE DEBASEMENT Oh WO-
MEN.
To complete the ecstasy of those
who believe in the degradation of
human labor, need I say that at
Stockholm the debasement of wo-
man is perhaps more thorough
and complete than in any city of
northern;Europe2 She here prae-
tically supplants the beasts of
burden. And I am not altogether
unfamiliar with 'women's work in
Europe. I have seen her round
the pit mouth at the forge, and
barefooted in the brickyards of
'mere ie England.' filling blast
furnaces and t3nding coke ovens
in 'Runny France.' I have daily
watched her bearing the 'Father-
land,' and in Austria-Hungary do-
ing the work of man and beast on
the farm and in the mine.
I have seen women emerge from
the coal pits 'of busy Belgium,
wherelittlegirls andyoungwomen
graduate underground as hewers
of coal and drawers of carts, for it
is no uncommon thing in Europe
to hitch women and dogs together
that manufacturing may be dune
cheaply.
Aged, bent, and sunburned, I
have seen women, with rope over
shoulders, toiling on the banks of
canals and dykes in picturesque
Holland. Having witnessed all
this, I was yet surprised to find in
a city- so beautiful and seemingly
so rich and prosperous at Stock-
holm, women still more debased.
In Stockholm she is almost ex-
clusively employed as hod carrier
and bricklayer's assistant. She
carries bricks, mixes mortar, and,
in short, does all the heavy work
about the building. At the dinner
hour you see groups of women
sitting on the piles of wood and
stones eating their frugal repast.
They wear a short gowns coming
a trifle below the knee, with home -
knitted woolen stockingsland wood-
en shoes. Over the head a hand-
kerchief is tightly tied. Thoseen-
gaged in mixing mortar and tend-
ing plasterers wear aprons.
They are paid for a day of hard
work of this toil, lasting twelve
hours, the magnificent sum of ono
kroner (equivalent to ls. Id.)
Woman sweep the streets, haul
the rubbish, drag hand -carts up
the hills and over the cobble stones
unload bricks at the quays, attend
to parks, do the gardening and
row the numerous ferries which
abound at Stockholm. The entire
dairy business of the city is in
their hands, and here they take
the place of horses and dogs,
carrying on their shoulders the
heavy cans of milk from door to
door.—London Tit -Bits.
A dairyman claims that two
ounces of salt per day to each cow
increased the butter product one-
fifth, which indicates that a loss
may occur by the failure to sup-
ply some inexpensive essential,
though the farmer may bo feeding
liberally and giving his animals
the best of care otherwise.
CATCHING CIIICKENS.
When chickens are to be caught
it is best to do it after they have
gone to roost. The chasing liable
to ensue if one attempts to catch
them during the day not only
annoys the person in pursuit, but
is highly;, injurious to the fowl.
Besides all the other poultry is
generally frightened, and more or
less injury results from this.
JOTTINGS FROM AOItICULTURAi,
JOURNALS.
Itis absolutely:necessary to sup-
ply to the soil such plant food as
is lacking. The only question to
be decided is how to sapply it
most economically.
A fifteen -mild journey is an
average day's work for a horse.
How far does the cow travel in a
poor pasture, flipping a penny-
weight of grass here and there, to
get her daily ration ? Then she
is expected to pay for it through
the milkpail, says the Mirror and
Farmer.
While butter is cheap use all
the cream and milk ill cooking

Nothing on the farm pays better

Hungarian grass or millet is the

The farmer who hes advanced

A CLEVER BLIND MAN.
'You talk about your extraordi-
nary cases of a blind men,' said a
prominent oculist to me the other
day. 'I have discovered one who
surpasses all hitnerto mentioned
in'Inedical works. He is Julius
Stern, who runs a billiard :saloon
and tobacco store onThird avenue.
Twelve years ago lie was a well-
known athlete, and carried off
many prizes in the championship
field. During a race one day he
met with a serious accident, was
carried to an hospital, and left it
when totally blind. He had arti-
ficial eyes inserted, and to look at
him no one in the world would
know of his affliction. He at-
tends to four billiard tables, tips
all the cues, sells cigars and tobac-
co, and can tell all the different
brands and makes change just as
quickly as any one possessing
sight. He has never yet been
known to make a mistake.
Stranger than all, he can play
billiards. Not, of course, a re-
gular game, but, by placing ball$
at either end of the table, he can
play many difficult shots. He
made a bet last week that he
would walk from his store
to the city hall, dine in a restaur-
ant and board an up -town 'I,' road
train without using a stick or
even pausinga:moment. He won
the bet, and, although he met
hundreds of people, not one could
tell that he was blind.'—New Yolk
