Mrs P. E. NTcltoTeon('Pearl [div
ers'), proprietor of the New Or-
leans Picayune, and a well-known
poetess and writer of charming
stories for children, began as a
contributor to the country papers
of Mississippi, and then was
sought for by larger papers. She
took the Picayune when it was
running down and getting deeper
in debt with every issue. By her
superior management and skill she
paid off all indebtedness, and has
made that well-known daily quot-
ed all over the world, and has
amid all her business perplexities
kept her pen steadily employed.
Mrs Frank Leslie was, like Mrs
Nicholson, a New Orleans girl,
It is singular that New Orleans
furnished the world the only two
noted women -journalists, both of
whom took great papers when
they were bankrupt, and made
them pay out of debt and become
sources of wealth. Mrs Frank
Leslie began writing short stories
for Frank Leslie's periodicals, and
her remarkably clear style, pure
English and originality attracted
Mr Leslie's attention. When he
visited New Orleans he hunted up
the talented girl, became charmed
with her,and then fell in love with

The founder of the Vanderbilt
house, old Commodore Cornelius
Vanderbilt,was an oyster and fish
peddler of New York. He owned
his own boats, and found he could
make money by carrying local
freight as lie wassailing back and
forth with his fish and oysters.
This led him to go into the water -
carrying tinde, in Which he made
his first great fortune. His sons,
William K. and Cornelius, both
good business men, added to the
immense fortune they inherited.
Jay Gould starred by peddling
a mouse -trap, the patent of which
he bought, and made considerable
money out of it. From that spe-
culation he has had plain sailing.
The original John Jacob Astor,

to trap the animals himself, and
then established a regular depot
and traded for them in New York.

youth, and used to study while

Pause" before you follow ex-

and an ass laden with wool went
over a brook together. By chance
the$ mules pack became wet, the
salt melted, and his burden be-
came lighter. After they had
passed, the mule told his „rood
fortune to the ass, who, thinking
to speed as well, wetted his pack
at the next water ; but his load
became the heavier, and he broke

Garfield began as driver of

the odd hours, and then became
a school teacher. From the school-

sion. No career is more encour-
aging and fuller of lessons to the
youth of this age than that of
James Abram Garfield. The rise
of the canal boy was more won-

Whittington and his famous cat.
Garfield did not even have a cat
to start out with, as did the his-
torical Lord Mayor of London.

A heart-rending occurren o is
reported from Pembroke. Last
week Thos Young, aged 23, of
Clark River, who was engaged as
cook in one of the lumber camps
above Chapleau, feeling unwell,
decided to go home. On arriving
at Chapleau he found that the
train that he wished to take bad
not arrived, and thinking a walk
might do him good, determined to
try it to tho next stations About
half way he became so sick that
he was obliged to seek refuge at
a deserted camp. There be lay
for five days a prey to mosquitos
and black flies, unable to summon
assistance and without anything
to eat. Finally he managed to
drag himself two miles to the rail-
way track, where he met railway
men, who placed him on the train
for home. He died shortly after
reaching his [destination so dis-
figured by bites of insects as to be
hardly recognizable.
Mrs Motley, of Winnipeg, just
after finishing an address at the
W.C.T.U. convention at the Port-
age, on Thursday,was seized with
a paralytic stroke and died Friday
morning. She was an ardent
temperance worker, and was 65
years old.
