The Sabbath day was ended in a village

should be telling awful tales ; 1 ]
When the sea lead spent its passion, ard
should cart upon the shore
Bits of wreck and swollen victims, as it
had done heretofore.
With the rough wind blowing round her
a brave woman strained her eyes.
And she saw along the billows a large
vessel fall and rise :
0, it needed not a prophet to tell what
the end must be,
For no ship could ride in safety near
there in such a sea.
Then the pitying people hurried from
their homes and thronged upon the
beach.
0, for the power to cross the water
and the perishing to reach !
Helpless hands were wrung with sorrow
tender hearts grew cold with dread,
And the ship urged by the tempest, to
the fatal rock shore sped.
'•She has parted in the middle ! 0 the
half of her goes down !
God have mercy ! Is heaven far to seek
for those who drown ?"
Lo ! when next the white, shecked faces
looked with terror on the sea,
Only one last clinging tigure on the spar
was seen to be.
Near the trembling watchers carne the
wreck, tossed by the wave,
And the man still clung and floated,
though no power on earth could
save.
"Could we send him a short message
Here's a trumpet—shout away .

And they listened. He is singing Jesus
lover of my soul';
And the winds bronght back the echo
"While the nearer waters roll":
Strange, indeed, it was to hoar him,'
Till the storm of life is past.'
Singing bravely from the waters, '0,
receive my soul at last.'
He could have no other refuge. 'Hangs
my helpless soul ou Thee;
Leave, ah, leave me not—" The singer
dropped at last into the sea;
And the watchers looking homeward,
through their eyes with tears made
dim,
Said 'He passed to be with Jeans in the
singing of that hymn."

1. Suppose that for the recep-
tion of the temporal blessings of
to -day, the Lord would issue this
law: All who kneel down at
evening and offer a prayer, thank-
ing me for the blessings of the
day, and asking my watchful care
through the night, and shall re-
turn thanks for each meal, as the
viands are spread before them,
shall be blessed with life and
earthly good, but whoever refuses
or neglects to comply with these
conditions, that same day he 1
shall fast. .How many persons,
think ye, would go hungry ?
But suppose the law was writ-
ten as follows : All who will offer
the prayer, and give thanks as
stated above, shall live to -day,
but whoever refuses, or neglects
to comply with those conditions,
that same day shall die. Now we
are to suppose that t othing be-
yond the temporal death were
known, and the grave were an
eternal sleep, how many world
we have to bury. to -,lay'?
But instead of the doctrine of
materialism, that death ends
;111 we were taught that
tkerc were no bottom to the grave.,
and that men, upon dying, went
0n down into punishment, and

that the punishmen', is hell, tor- front the household.
10001, darkness, with weeping It is a wonderful advantage to
and wailing and gnashing of teeth; a ,nen. in every pursuit or avoca-
that such torment were eternal ,
and that the man who refused to
comply with the terms above
stated would that day drop into
this burning lake ! Now how
many persons would go to hell to-
day ?
Now let us suppose that we
were subject to death as we are,
and though we might live many
years, yet we might die to -day ,
and that if we would obey the
rules above stated, and should die,
that we should be carried immedi-
ately to paradise,and then witness
the unspeakable happiness of the
righteous; and that;in ease we neg-
lected such duties to -day, and
were to die, that we should miss
that happy state, does it not seem
strange that any sane man would
live in that way ; that should he
die, he would miss heaven ?
But finally : Suppose the Lord
gives no law for to -day, and not
for one day in the future -and this
is what he does -and that if we
walk uprightly to day, and live,
that we shall have food and rai-
ment, the influence of the Holy
Spirit upon our hearts, and every
needed comfort ; and that should
we die to day, we shall bo taken

which are rarely combined to an
equal degree in man.
Thorough selfishness destroys or
paralyses enjoyment. A heart
made selfish by the contest for
wealth is like a citadel stormed in
