CHARACTER ILLUSTRATED
IN A MOUSTACHE.
_here is a good deal of chareater
In the moustache.
As the form of the upper lip
and in the regions about it has
argely to deal with the feelings,
F attening Steers on Corn En.
silage and Meal.
To the Editor of the Clinton .New Era.
SIB,—The opinion hall been rather
freely ea[psesed of late, even amongst
farmers, that beef could not be fed any
longer at a profit, and that because of
this it would be better for them to de-
vote their attention to the production of
pride, self-reliance/ manliness, other kinds of farm produce. This Wee
vanity and other .qualities„ that gained currenoy,in part at least, through
give belt -control, the moustache is the comparatively low prides paid for
beef during recent years compared with
those paid several years ago.
As a natural consequence the splendid
trade which Ontario has carried on for
years past Britain was
severalwith
likely tbecoe imperilled, and the
handsome returns paid to us by England
for our finished animals diverted into
other channels. Farmers have shown
a too easy willingness tosell their beasts
as unfinished stores,instead of fattening
them here and then sending them across
the sea, thus realizing the highest pos-
sible profit that can be made on them in
Ontario.
It affords me much pleasure to be
able to state to the farmers of this pro-
vince that an experiment in fattening
steers was conducted at this farm dur•
ing the past winter which makes it
abundantly clear that money can still be
made by fattening steers of theright kind
when proper facilities are at hand.
Ten steers, were purchased for this
institution in Ootober, 1889, five 2 and
five 3 years old. The price paid for
them was $500, or $50 a head. They
were sold and weighed for shipment to
Great Britain on May 16 for $897.30, or
$397.80 more than was paid for them.
Several exceedingly interesting and
valuable conclusions can be drawn from
the experiment. Amongst these may
be mentioned the following :
1. That corn ensilage and meal will
fatten steers quite as well and as cheap-
ly as the old time-honored ration of hay
roots and meal. This fact must prove
of much service to the farmer engaged
in raising beef, for there are large sec-
tions in the country where corn can be
successfully grown for ensilage, and
where roots cannot be grown with any
certainty. The labor of feeding is also
reduced to a minimum, for what method
of feeding could be more simple than
that of mixing a little meal with ensil-
age and feeding to the animals ?
2. That • by selecting animals juci-
ciously, and feeding;them under proper
conditions, with food at present prices,
three profits may be realized': First, a
profit on the food grown, when it is
charged at market values for feeding
purposes; second, a profit on manure
over the cost of labor of feeding] and
litter, and third, a direct cash profit.
In this experiment the cash profit on
six animals fed four months was $35.11,
and the profit for the manure over the
cost of bedding and labor was also con-
siderable. The food in the experiment
was also charged at market prices, and
on the growing of -this there would be
some profit. To be sure, the profit in
any one respect was not large, but it is
very encouraging nowadays to have a
profit at all from the farm.
3. It alsodemonstrates the wiadom of
keeping animals of the first order.
These steers were sold for 5j[ cents !per
pound live weight. In ocly one other
instance have I heard that this price
was paid ,the present year, and in both
cases it was paid because of the excell-
ence of the animals.
Full particulars relating to this ex-
periment will be given to the press in a
few days, as a bulletin on the subject is
now in the hands of the printer.
Yours, etc.,
THOMAS SHAW.

more particularly connected with
the expressions of those qualtlies
or the reverse.
When the moustache leragged
and, as it were, flying hither and
thither, there is a lack of proper
self-control.
When it is straight and orderly
the reverse is the case, other
things, of course, taken into as
count.
If there is a tendenc,l to curl at
the outer ends of the moustache,
there is a tendency to ambition,
vanity or display.
When the curl turns upward
there is geniality, combined with
a love of approbation ; when the
inclination is downward there is a
sedate turn, of mind not accom-
panied with gloom.
It is worthy of remark that
good-natured men will, in playing
with the moustache, invariably
give it an upward inclination,
whereas cross gained or morose
men will pull it obliquely down-
ward.

I wanted to write a story and com-
pete for one of the prizes, but as I am
only thirteen years of age I could not
think of anything to write about, so I
got my grandfather to tell me some-
thing about what he came through.
When he was a boy he left Vermont
state and came to the Province of Que-
bec with -his parents in 1815, he was
then twelve years of age. They settled
in the township of Inverness, county of
Megantic. The nearest neighbor was
thirteen miles away. There were no
rail -roads and he said he had to go on
snow -shoes. The first three years were
so frosty that they could raise nothing
but a few turnips. They brought stock
with them but they had to part with
them all but a cow and a pig to keep
themselves from starving. They had
to bring all their provisions a distance
of over fifty miles over very bad roads.
On the third year it began to snow on
the 6th of June and it snowed for three
days and three nights and, on the 9th
day it was two feet deep, fand on the
12th it turned very hot and the snow
went off quicker than it came, and after
that they were able to raise good crops.
They went seven miles to plant potatoes
near a lake where it was not so frosty
and they drew them home in the winter
on a hand -sleigh, it was in one of these
frosty years that a Scotch family by
the name of Fogerson was killed by the
indians. Fogerson was one of my
grandfather's nearest neighbors, al-
though he lived thirteen miles away, in
the township of steeds. Fogerson and
his wife and sev children were killed.
They were kille for their provisions.
It was in the month of April that these
Indians went down to kill Mr Foger-
son and his family. They stopped in
my grandfather's house all night.
When they came to Mr Fogerson'shouse
he was sitting in the door making new
apiles for his sugar -bush, and the Indian
shot him and then he went into the
house and killed the woman, be then
told his squaw that she had to kill the
children, but she had not the courage
and lie had to kill them himself and
put them in the bed and burnt the
house. A family of Indians who liv-
ed by my Grandfather's house told
him how they were killed. They said
that after the Indians killed them they
took all the provisions and went to a
bush and stayed two weeks and ate
them they then came back to the Indian
house near my grandfathers and stayed
around there till they found out the
people knew who killed them and then
they skipped out before the people
could get help from Quebec to catch
them; as two of my grandfather's nei-
ghbors were going into Quebec they
went into Mr Fogerson's barn and his
cattle were tied up and near starving
so they turned them out to get some-
thing to eat. My grandfather left the
township of Invernese in 1854 and came
to the township of Howick, county of
Huron, Ontario,
