MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
111AKKE1'
Since a week ago there has been but
little change in the position of the cat-
tle trade here, and butchers' cattle are
in light supply. No inlproveiKent is ex-
peoted fur some time, or until grass-fed
cattle begin to arrive. This shortage,,
however, i3 met by the over supply of
export cattle, whi,h continue to arrive
in large numbers, despite the very un-
favorable state of the markets on the
other side. Shippers are buying only
enough to till their contracts, and many
are selling their surplus stock here in
preference to shipping. The markets
on the other side were never in a worse
state than at present, and the outlook
is certainly rather blue. The scarcity
of butchers' cattle on this market is in
a measure due notably to the large pur-
chases made in the country for ship-
ment. In consequence of the light offer-
ings, local prices are firm and fully a
cent higher than at the same time last
year. As will be seen by the above, the
receipts continue very large, consisting
almost wholly of fatted, bought in the
county for export. A few shippers are
selling their stock here, thus helping to
counterbalance the shotage in the sup-
ply of butchers' cattle. Trade was un-
steady during the week, and prices were,
if anything, a trifle easier. At the close
there was no improvement in the hog
market, and receipts of hogs showed a
considerable falling off. We quote the
following as being fair values :—Export
cattle, 41c to 50 ; good butchers', 4c to
4,}c; medium do., 3,}c to 4c; culls, 3c to
3fc; sheep, 4ic to 5ic; hogs, 5c to 5fc;
calves 36 to 38.
The condition of the cattle trade in
England is such as to cause consider-
able anxiety. The market is glutted
with American and Canadian cattle,and
prices are such as to result in serious
loss on all shipments. A considerable
part of the exports are, however, on
English account, and while the losses
are to be regretted, in any case they
wilt not fall so heavily upon our Can-
adian shippers. The loss on Canadian
cattle will, however, be less than that
on those sent from the United States,
which must be slaughtered on arrival.
The Rev. W. W. Carson, late
of Ottawa, and now of Kingston,
,is taking the IeaG in Canada, it
appears, in making the pulpit,
as it should be. a place for the dis-
semination of knowledge on the
care of the body as well as of the
soul, He recently preached a
sanitary sermon from a Bible
text to an immense congregation
in Kingston, according to the
Daily News of that city. He is
a firm beleiver in sanitary science
and designed it by the title of "the
new gospel." The natural infer-
ence to be drawn from the text,
is that if life is worth living, it is
surely worth living at its best,
and it is not at its best if all the
dimensions of man are not taken
in.
I;EMUNERATIVE SONGS.
Everyone knows the song'Alice
Where Art Thou 2' Mr Welling-
ton Guernsey, the composer, of-
fered it to several publishers for
a. #5 note, but they refused the
bargain, only to find, to their sore
annoyance and .dismay, that it
eventually attained an immense
sale.
Balfe's song, 'Como Into the
Garden, Maud,' was composed for
Messrs Boosey Co. and was
published on the loyalty system.
Shortly after it became 'popular
Balfe sold his royalty to the firm
for .£100. Now the c>pyright if
put into the open market would
run into four figures.
