Uranium. a metal whoa() rarity is indicated by its market pride, $12,000 pee ton, was afiecovered just a hundred years, ago, when Klaproth bueCeeiiud in isolating, from a dark,, colored mineral know as a pitchblende a yellow oxide, which, after carefully test- ing, he pronounced to be oxide of a new metal. Up to the present time it has only been met with in isolated pockets and patches, but now, according to the London Times, the ceutonnary of its dis- covery has been marked by the finding of a continuous lode at the Uuiun mine, Grampound Road, Cornwall, which is believed to be the only known lode in the world. This discovery is regarded as uni- que in the history of the metal, for the lode is -vltat is known tis a true fissure veld, x1`11 assays of the ore go up as high as 30 per cent. It is anticipated that the pre- sent discovery will enable two im- portant applications of the metal to be followed up. The first is a substitute for gold in electroplat- ed ware, inasmuch as with platin- um and copper it forms two beau- tiful alloys, each leaving the ap- pearance of gold, and the former also resisting the action of acids. The second application is in con- nection with electric insulations, where its usefulness consists in Es higli electric resistance. FACSIMILE OF BOTTLE WITH PUFF WRAPPER. It would appear from this that either the sermons in those days were long and dry or the people were lacking in. piety. It was not au unusual thing in old days for comparatively wealthy men to set apart a portion of their worldly goods for keeping the con- gregation awake. Some curious provisions wore made for this pur- pose. At a church in Cheshire forty or fifty years ago one of the wardens used to go around during the service carrying a long wand. If any of the congregation suc- cumbed to drowsiness and fell asleep, they were awakened with a gentle tap on the head from the wand. At Dunchurch a similar custom existed. There a person bearing a stout wand, shaped like a hayfork at the end, stepped stealthily up and down the aisles, and whenever bo saw an individ- ual asleep, he touched him so ef- fectually ffectually that he speedily was arousedarom his dreams, this be- ing sometimes done by fitting the fork to the neck. PERTINENT PARAGRAPHS. Between the Ural and the Oceotsk seas there is a spot half as large as the State of Michigan, which is frozen ground to the depth of 94 feet. A brakeman lost his right arm while in the discharge of his duty. Ile sued the Boston and Albany Railroad, and got a verdict in his favor of $18,000. For eight hours an infant of Stephen Bueleen, of Bridgeport, ay In a trance, and an undertak- er came and put the babe in a casket. Everything was ready for burial when the child sudden - y woke up and sang out lustily, "Ma !" It is all right. There is a craze in London for queer leather. Some shops are stocked with fancy articles made from the skins of all sorts of beasts, reptiles and fishes, includ- ng pelican skins, lion and panther skins, fish skins, monkey skins and snake skins. Prince Bismark's ancestors ob- tained their family name from one of those ancient castles a short distance from Stendal, on theroad from Cologne to Berlin, in the centre of the old Marvuisate of Branoedburg. The castle had this name because it defended the "Marta," or the lino where the River Biese formed a boundary in former times or mark of defense against intruders. Hence the name Bismark., A schoolboy in Edinburg scald- ed tris left leg and foot from knee to toes so badly that the skin peeled offend the flesh ulcerated. There being no signs of healing, the sur - goon obtained a greyhound puppy, seven days old, chloroformed it to death, shaved its body closely, skinned it and with the skin graft- ed the skin of the boy so as to cov- er all the ulcerated spots. The result was surprising. The leg rapidly healed, and when the pa- tient was discharged "the color of the grafted skin was uniform and very similar to that of the normal akin." Most all the girls have theirs." "No, May ; 1 can't spare the money." Tho above request was persuas- ively made by a girl as she was prepareing for school one tine spring morning. The refusal came from the parent in a curt in- lfl'hrent tone. The father started for his place of business. On his way thither he met a friend, and, being a hail fellow well met ho invited him into a public house to have a drink. As usual, there others there and the man who could not spare fifty cents for a hat treated the crowd. When about to leave he laid a half -dollar on the counter, which ,just paid for the drinks. Just then the dealer's daughter entered, and, going behind the bar, said; "Papa, I want fifty cents for my now hat." "All right," said the dealer, and taking up the fifty cents from the counter lie handed it over to the girl, who departed smiling. May's father seemed dazed, walked out alone, and said him- self; III had to bring my fifty cents here for tho rumsoller's danghtor to buy a hat with, after refusing it to my own daughter. I'll never drink another drop.' And he kept his word.--Phila- dolphin Methodist. Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Purgative Pellets; veg—etable, harmless, painless, sure! Children Cry for WHY FLOWERS SLEET'. That flower's sleep is evidant to the most causal observer. The daisy opens at sunrisend closes at sunset ; hence its nate, "Day's eye." Tho morning glory opens with the day, but never lives to see another sunrise. The "John - go -to -bed -at -noon" awakes at 4 oclock in the morning, but closes its eyes during the middle of the day ; the dandelion is in full bloom only during strong light. This habit of some flowers is cer- tainly very curious, and furnishes ono of the many instances which prove the singular adaptability of everything in nature. Tho reas- on is found in the method by which this 'class of flowers is fertilized. It is obvious that flowers fertilized by night -flying insects would derive no advantage by being open during the day ; and, on the other hand, that those which are fertilized by bees would gain nothing by remaining open at night. Why may we not sup- pose, then, that the closing of flowers may have reference to the habits of insects? In support of this theory we observed that wind fertilized flowers never sleep.—St. Louis Republic. STIRIA for Infants and Children. -- T H E —_ CLINTON_ NEW ER.t R.
