It metal whoso rarity is indicated by its market price, $12,000 per tou, was, discovered just a hundred years ago, when Kluproth succeeded in isolating from a dark,, colored mineral LIDO as a pitchblende a yellow oxide, which, after carefully test- ing, he pronounced to be oxide of a new metal. Up to the present time it has only been met with in isolated pockets and patches, but now, according to the London Times, the eentenllary of its dis- covery has been marked by the finding of a continuous lode at the Uuiuu mine, Grampound Road, Cornwall, which is believed to be the only known lode in the world. This discovery is regarded as uni- que in the history of the metal, for the lode is -chat is known as a true fissure vein, tied assays of the ore go up as high as 30 per' cent. It is anticipated that the pre- sent discovery will enable two im- portant applications of the foetal to be followed up. The first is a substitute for gold in electroplat- ed ware, inasmuch as with platin- um and copper it forms two beau- tiful alloys, each leaving the ap- pearance of gold, and the former also resisting the action of' acids. The second application is in con- nection with electric insulations, whore its usefulness consists in its high electric resistance. FAC -SIMILE OF BOTTLE WITH LUFF • WRAPPER. DEMAND POND'S EX- TRACT. MOrLtioft made in early Eng# lig bistery-'ot some remarkable bequests. An;png the >Iuost' sin- gular was that of John Rudge, who on the 17th; of April, 1725, be- queathed to the parish of Trysul}, in Staffordshire, the sum of 20' shillings a year in order that a. poor man might be employed to go about the church during the de- livery of the sermon and keep the people awake, and incidentally to drive dogs But of the sacred edifice. It would appear from this that either the sermons in those days were long and dry or the people were lacking impiety. It was not an unusual thing in old days fur comparatively wealthy men to set apart a portion of their worldly goode for keeping the con- gregation awake. Some curious provisions were made for this pur- pose. At a church in Cheshire forty or fifty years ago one of the wardens used to go around during the service carrying a loug wand. If any of the congregation suc- cumbed to drowsiness and fell asleep, they were awakened with a gentle tap on the head from the wand. At Dunchurch a similar custom existed. There a person bearing a stow: wand, shaped like a hayfork at the end, stepped 1 stealthily up and down the aisles, ' and whenever he saw an individ- ual asleep, he touched him so ef- fectually ffectually that he speedily was aroused from his dreams, this be- ing sometimes done by fitting the fork to the neck. For eight hours an infant of Stephen Burleen, of Bridgeport, lay in a trance, and an undertak• er came and put the babe in a casket. Everything was ready for burial when tho child sudden- ly woke up and sang out lustily, "Ma !" It is all right. There is a craze in London for queer leather. Some shops are stocked with fancy articles made from the skins of all sorts of beasts, reptiles and'fishei3, includ- ing pelican skins, lion and panther skins, fish skins, monkey skins and snake skins. Prince Bismark's ancestors ob- tained their family name from one of those ancient castles a short distance from St.endal, on the road from Cologne to Berlin, in the centre of the old Marvuisate of Brannedburg. The castle had this name because it defended the "Marca," or the line where the River Bieso formed a boundary in former times or mark of defense against intruders. Hence the name Bismarlc. That flowers sleep is evident to the most causal observer. The daisy opens at sunrise tnd closes at sunset ; hence its nae, "Day's eye." Tho morning glory opens with the day, but never lives to see another sunrise. The "John - go -to -bed -at -noon" awakes at 4 o clock in the morning, but closes its eyes during the middle ofthe day; the dandelion is in full bloom only during strong light. This habit of some flowers is cer- tainly very curious, and furnishes one )f the many instances which prove the singular adaptability of everything in nature. Tho reas- on is found in the method by which this `class of flowers is fertilized. It is obvious that flowers fertilized by night -flying insects would derive no advantage by being open during the day; and, on the other hand, that those which are fertilized by bees would gain nothing by remaining open at night. Why may we, not sup- pose, then, that the closing of flowers may have reference to the habits of insects,? In support of this theory we observed that wind fertilized flowers never sleep.—St. Louis Republic. for Ir tat i and Children. upautorlafssowen adapted techadeeatha0 eastinisicores Odle. Conte and see the goods, A schoolboy in Edinburg scald ed Isis left leg and foot from knee to toes so badly that the skin peeled off and the flesh ulcerated. 'There being no signs of healing, the sur geon obtained a greyhound puppy, seven days old, chloroformed it to death, shaved its body closely skinned it and with the skin graft ed the skin of the boy so as to cov er all the ulcerated spots. The resn'it was surpeisine'. The leg rapidly healed, and when the pa tient was discharged "the color of the grafted skin was uniform and very similar to that of the norma skin." A TRUE _STORY. •'Pap:', please can you give me tifty cents to buy my summer hat? Most all the girls have theirs." "No, May ; 1 can't •pare the money." Tho above request was persults ively made by a girl as she was prepareing fur school one tine spring morning. The refusal calve frons the parent in a curt in - 1 ll'erent tone. The father started for his place of business. On his way thither he met a frleud1 nc a being a hail fellow well met he i nvited him into a public house to have a drink. As usual, there others there and the man who could not spare fifty cents for a hat treated the crowd. When about to leave ho laid a half -dollar on the counter, which just paid for the drinks. Just then the dealer's daughter entered, and, going behind the bar, said; "Papa, I want fifty cents for my new hat." "All right," said the dealer, and taking up the fifty cents from the counter he handed it over to the girl, who departed smiling. May's father seemed dazed, walked out along, and said to him- self; "I had to bring my fifty cents here for the rumseller's daughter to buy a hat with, after refusing it to my own daughter. I'll never drink another drop.' And he kept his word. --Phila- delphia Methodist.
